I wasn't sure whether to watch this because i'm not a very religious person and i'm a bit cynical about things like that but I hired it out from blockbuster last night. It blew my mind. Its a very brutal portrayal. The whipping scene has got to be one of the most powerful scenes since the russian roullette scene in Deer Hunter. Mel Gibson makes you watch, its an honest portrayal and shows that jesus was just as human as you or me and not some powerful god. Its not made me religious or anything because it didn't preach to me, which is what I expected it to do.

Just watched this film on DVD and got to admit is one of the best films I have seen up to date.
The lead actor was amazing and well directed by Mel Gibson.
10 star film in my view.
Anyone else seen it, and what is your view on it.
I think its a film you love or hate.

I went to see it at the cinema when it came out. Left completely dumbstruck by the experience. Started to go to a local church more regularly as an indirect result and have now become a christian. Can't get over that all that violence was a direct result of me - Jesue would have gone though all this even if I was the only one on the planet! Not sure I could watch it again tho.

Old thread but still relevant and didn't want to start a new one about this great film.

I always ask myself why I'm watching the dvd, which is rare because I struggle with Jesus being so horribly tortured and beaten. If he could suffer it, surely I can watch and empathise with him?

I defy most people who have kids, to watch the flashback scene, where a distraught mother Mary witnesses her battered son struggling with the cross and falling, of Jesus as a little boy falling over...with a dry eye! I'm a relatively tough guy but can't.

 How can you conceivably be at fault for anything which is supposed to have occurred near on 2,000 years before you were even born?

Least of all anything involving a being who is supposedly 'all powerful' and as such could easily have forgiven humanity (who this all powerful being apparently made faulty and then punished for not being perfect) without messily sacrificing himself to himself.

If Jesus really was the sky pixie incarnate then he had himself tortured to death because of some perverse desire to have that happen not because of anything you or any other mere mortal have done.

Thousands upon thousands of people were executed by the Romans & other powers by crucifixion, since then numerous more painful & drawn out ways to torture people to death have been devised (a fair few by the Inquisition of the Catholic Church) why exactly are we supposed to be so impressed & fixated upon one particular crucifiction?

It's an awful film. Not just because of the extreme violence based on the fantasies of its writers, but because it's historically incorrect. The film is fiction - and should be viewed as such.

I still say it was great, not fantasist, but accurate in many parts and involving. Many films take liberties with fact (Lawrence of Arabia, battle of Britain, etc), for dramatic purposes but which I still love, and I'm sure this film isn't 100% fact also. I bear this in mind.

Non-belief or high blood pressure about something representing a deity doesn't decry a film's good quality, story-wise, linguistically or historically.

How do you know it was accurate in many parts?

Huscarl, which parts were accurate? In fact, no. Let's not go there. Here's an article that may interest you: http://www.archaeology.org/0403/etc/letter.html

Bloomdido made no such claim. All he's done is ask you on what grounds you claim to know this particular example of torture porn to be "accurate in many parts".

Why don't you try responding to what people actually post instead of what you wish they'd posted?

I'm confused. Since when is 2 hours of watching a man be tortured to death entertainment?

Thanks for that. Zombie Jesus torture porn imagery is of course, available in many schools near you. Buy the models in all good jewellers. Why not collect the full set? Alternatively go and browse them in a church near you.

I watch films and judge them on the acting/screenplay/filming etc etc. When i watched this film i was blown away. I thought it was right up there with Schindlers List.

I don't get caught up in it's factual credentials (does anyone really know?. I don't think so). I enjoy it for what it is. Someones interpretation of events that happened all that time ago.

I'd give it a 9/10 any day of the week

The depicion of our lord jesus christy, nailed to the cross and bleeding with his six-pack on view. Not the sort of thing I would want looking down on my children.

On top of that Im surprised at Mel Gibson being a Catholic, cashing in on this utter rubbish.

+1 Torture porn.

I made myself sit through it, because I vaguely hoped it would be able to redeem itself (!) by the end.

Or as someone else said

"I watched Mel Gibson's remake of the Life of Brian, and I didn't laugh once."

Wow. I'm shocked. I watched a film. It sounds like half of you watched some sort of pornographic/religious broadcast.

Geez...Get over yourselves people. Talk about reading too much in to a film

I thought you seemed to be getting a tad heated, but if you saw it as a personal attack then think you seem to have a problem. Have you seen anyone about this paranoia?
