Its only 2 years old, wouldnt have thought it should be on its way out already!

What to do next??

sounds like some files have been corrupted and as you can get into safe mode it's probably a driver file, try booting to safe mode and doing a system restore to the last date you know it was working, hopefully that will restore the drivers to a point prior to the corruption, failing that can you tell which files have a problem

Also assuming you can recover the system scan the hard drive for errors and do a spyware scan as well

If you hammer away at F8 while loading (same way as getting into Safe Mode) you can choose "step by step confirmation". Say yes to everything, let us know the last thing you said yes to before it hung...

can you tell us the names of the files that can't be read ?

Im home at 4.30 and i will give this all a bash (with a hammer on the screen might be the best bet)

hubby says he cant get on the net either - can you get safe mode to get on the net, so we can make sure the windows updates are uptodate too!

Thanks

yes theres a safe mode with networking option on the boot menu, at least there is on mine (XP Pro)

I just had a quick look and managed to access this place from safe mode so you might be lucky and be able to do windows updates from it

the problem could be your hard disk though, I'd suggest doing a surface scan and tell it to fix any problems it finds first
