...Went to an Indian restaurant called the Balti King.......read the reviews afterwards and found that the owner was fined £10,000 for having low hygeine standards..

http://www.sheffieldbase.com/baltiking.shtml

......didn't feel dodgy after going there but won't go back there again......nice Z3 outside the building though

You should have read the reviews here first, no mention of Balti King in here. I have been and found it a bit tacky. The Z3 is probably the owners, made a fortune from selling dodgy curries to drunken students.

Well, the University of Sheffield promote Balti King like mad because they sponsor loads of the uni's sports teams. In my experience, the only people who actually enjoy Balti King curries are going there at around 3am after a heavy drinking session.

We went plenty times whilst I was at university and each time we said we'd never go again... each time it was awful... each time we complained about the quality of the curry and they normally dismissed our complaints as rubbish because we were drunk - but let's face it - the more drunk we are, the better the curry will taste, so these must have been really bad!

Balti King is bad. Full stop.

i have never been there, and won't be going.. but a lot of the students at my uni didn't go there for a while after the review but now all of them just go back there... weird.. hehe...

I went a few times whilst at Uni in the early to mid 90's and always enjoyed it :o The owner was really friendly too.

I've been a few times in the mid 90's also. The food seemed ok but, I found the seating a bit uncomforatable. Upstairs is better than downstairs IMO.

Been there a couple of time, have to say I wasn't impressed and hadn't any plans to go again..

Tried Nirmals on West St/Glossop Rd the other week. Excellent all round. Will certainly be going there again soon..

mm dunno about that place, thankfully I have never had the pleasure of eating there although I have passed it on numerous occasions.
I did have a take-away from the Everest the other night which was absolutely rancid.

I'm sticking to Tesco finest indian meal for two in future.

There are tons of Indian restaurants in Sheffield that p*ss all over the Balti King! They've got where they are by spending heavily on advertising and free offers NOT by 'food' quality!

To all you students out there -

You might wish to consider some of the following (speaking from experience)

1. Gulshan BH (The Wicker) Also Deliver
2. Mangla (Spital Hill) Also Deliver
3. Kashmir Curry Centre (Spital Hill) Unsure of Deliveries
4. Induz (Attercliffe) Unsure of Deliveries

Take Aways

1. Imrans (Wicker)
2. Kebabish (soon to be opening but if their standard of food is anything like the rest in the chain it will be a good stop).

I have noticed that most of the take aways around Crookes, Broomhill etc tend to cater purely for the drunken student with quality slipping somewhat as the night progresses on after 10:30pm.

ps. I like the Z3 - although I don't have one!

Mingin.
Horrid place do not go there again no matter how much beer uve had. When even the students complain its bad. Do u know they also own the Millenium place across the road? another one to avoid.
Nip around the corner and get a take away from the manzil this is good has seperate veggie menu (if u need) and delivers.
Also I do believe the indian chef on crookes has changed owners again and is definatly better than it was, and the jaflong is/was up for sale.

Not a fan of the Indian Chef, especially for eating inside. Tables are too close together.

Note
Please refrain from posting "rumours" about Balti King or any other business. If you name a source then that's fine, but just saying "a friend told me" isn't good enough.

Anyway... I've never been to Balti King as I think any company that uses that much marketing can't be very good

Been going for years but lately seems like they have about 75 waiters on who who dont co-ordinate what they are doing...we were asked 4 times in 5 minutes "is everything ok for you" before we had even ordered, asked "any drinks please" by 3 different waiters, and 3 different waiters tried to take our order within 10 minutes, and then every 3 minutes it was "everything all right sir?".....I mean good service is one thing but this got rediculous

Maybe not intentioanl but I had to laugh at your experience. It was quite funny mate.

Must say, I've not been since they 'allegedly' got reported by the food standards place (probably ok now ?). I did like it in there but the masala's had a distict 'pillar box' red colour. ...and yes, I agree, more waiters than punters at times. Quick service if you're looking for very fast service.

My favorite restaurant is the 7 Spices Balti at West Bar...
A very different decor inside and beautiful meals. Not too pricey either. Try the Chicken Pathia......its nice and spicy and alot like sweet and sour......leaves a nice glow in the mouth

Last time I ate at the 7 Spices they took an hour to serve us with food that had been closer to dust from Mars than it had to being warm.

Is the Balti King the one up in crookes? If so, I would advise against it... food is mediocre at best, service is appauling.

It's been some years since I went there but I found that I was waiting quite a while but I had no complaints with the food.

I would strongly advise against the Balti King.

Ordered take away from there the other night:

It took one and a half hrs to get to me (kept promising it would be 5 mins), was cold, they messed the order up and couldnt change it, tasted bad and i had a rather dicky stomach the following day (enough said about that...). Apart from that it was fine (they did actually deliver the food and were very apolegtic about it).

I advise everyone to steer well clear of it. Seriously.

I'd rate the Balti King as being the worst in Sheffield.

One of the dips that came with the popudoms was ketchup with chopped onions.

The food was disgusting. The rice cooked to a mush, the meat (a generic sort, being brown and meat-like) was stringy and would of bounced if dropped. The sauce was unidentifiable, just a brown goo.

The others who had a veggie curry didn't do any better. They ended up with a meat curry, minus the meat.

The place is rubbish. It's a disgrace to currydom.

Hmmmm....I have only had food poisoning once in 3 years.....

Yes the food can be all the same, but never tried their takeaway service. I use the one in Walkley for takeaways, well on Barber road nr the Hadfield...superb and cheap.

I've eaten at Balti King a few times and found the food and service good... although I do remember reading something in the Star about the owner being fined for rat or mouse droppings in the kitchen!

For takeaway I prefer to use Jannaths ... its cheap and very good food IMO.

It's not somewhere I'd like to be taken to on a date but for a cheap meal out with friends I think it's ok. I've never ordered a take away from Balti King though. We always use the one on Commonside opposite the Springvale Pub. Yum yum.

Yes the Tajak was very good. Currently its closed. It looks like they're refurbishing it and its been renamed, but I've forgotten what to. Hopefully it'll be the same cook.

I think it closed because of vermin infestation.

On Wednesday lunchtime for a bit off a change myself and two work colleagues decided to go for a sit down curry meal in Broomhill to a well known curryhouse in the shopping parade.

We met up with one other friend at 1pm and went for the meal.

We shared poppadoms and bhajis and I and a female colleague had a lamb paneer and the other two had a chicken paneer and chicken ginger with cheesy naans and pilau rice. This was never going to be the best curry of my life, but it passed as a pleasant change to the normal lunchtime routine of a quick bite at the desk.

(We now move the story on approx 7 hours)

As the ref blew the whistle to start the 2nd half of the England match, my stomach took a turn for the worse. 45 mins and approx 4lbs lighter I emerged from my biohazard of a toilet knowing that that curry came out hotter than it went in. Still feeling worse for wear I was in bed not soon after.

On arriving at work today, one of my colleagues had been through the same as me and the other two were at home in bed still suffering with the "squatts"

I called enviromental health today to report my concerns, and they seem desparate to take delivery of stool samples and will not take the matter further unless samples are provided.

I can understand there insistance on stool samples for toxicalogical reasons and also to dissuade false accusations and I am sure that they aware of problems with this restaurant, having now read threads on this website.

The £60 for the meal is inconsequential besides the discomfort that all concerned have been put through. Is there anything else that can be done ???

I for one wont be visiting the Balti King again.

oops.....we had a meal there Sat night......but its Monday now and no biohazard toilet problems to date, althoygh I did feel a bit lethargic on Sunday morning but that was probably the litre of house wine I drank. Never mind the food, the red house wine was YUMMY.
