phlegmatist 16-12-2006, 21:13 For all the wrong reasons, I would have to say that 'Tesco Express' on West Street has one of the funniest shop names - I do hope they were going for irony. ;)
There's Curl Up and Dye (hairdressers) at the bottom of Fir Street in Walkley. My work mate lives on that road and I've often commented on why he's not more depressed when he has to drive towards that cheerful sentiment every morning. :hihi:
Hi,
On the early stages of London Rd is the famous chippie 'A salt 'n' Battered'...course, it's late and I may have the spelling wrong, but that's the name!

Mr Goose 19-12-2006, 13:45 This is a long anecdote - so please keep with me.
On Abbeydale Road (opposite the bottom of Carterknowle Road) there used to be a video shop. This would have been in about 1989. It was taken over by a couple from Rotherham.. He always said he had ambitions to "own a chain of them".
He obviously borrowed some money and did the shop up. It's name changed from "Video World" (or some other bland name) to "INTROSPECTIVE VIDEO”. The name puzzled me.
I was in the shop for the fist time since the name change – looking round I noticed that he had logos on the walls and all the “take home” VHS boxes had “INTROSPECTIVE” video labels.
I overheard him saying to a punter “Oh yes, I think INTROSPECTIVE captures it well – I want to offer a new, ground-breaking video rental service”
I said (as a young studenty Goose) “I think you mean INNOVATIVE”
He said
“Oh f**k”
I posted in another thread a shop which reminded me of this, an similar shop in Norwich . Mycock's Electrical (it was still there in 1992 when i worked on directories)
There's a guy with a shop in Bakewell called "John Mycock"...I have to admit that I've never been able to recall what he sells, just the silly name.
Then there's the shop in Hilsborough called "Three Little Swines"...obviously owned and run by a proud parent.
Theres always Spooktacula at Walkley which stocks everything wierd and wonderful. Including Deadtime Bears and a new range of hand made Coffins for the goths out there.:hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

I can't say it without cringeing. Yorkshire Artspace had such long-drawn out difficulty and frustration in getting their new building, they decided to call it Persistence Works. I cringe when I have to say that too.

i was going to mention that one, too...had my very lardy but quite pleasing cod and chips for lunch (wouldn't normally eat cod {unsustainable source}, but oddly, they had no haddock) today.

non-sheffield amusing names with which i used to be familiar include phat phuc (thai or vietnamese, can't remember, just off king's road) and r. soles (shoe shop on king's road). class.
by the way, there was a photo spread in a saturday guardian a year or two ago that showed amusing shop fronts. one of the things was take aways, and it included a picture of the battersea cod's home (sic) AND the wok this way that replaced it. it also showed curl up and dye on south road in one of its other spreads. tip top.
