View Full Version : Cats on tour - where has yours been?
So, I've been reliably informed that a cat climbed Everest of it's own accord in 1951 at the age of 5 months, and a friend of my sister's takes his cat mountain walking regularly. Litha takes her's to the seaside and feeds them candyfloss
Is your cat missing out, or do you take your cat to interesting places?
Where do you recommend other forumers take their kitty this year?
My Merlin has been lost on the roof (got out of the skylight and had to be fetched in through a skylight 10 houses up, 2 days later) and had an extended trip in 2 furniture vans that have been delivering in our street, as well as going to work with me repeatedly by stashing herself under the front seat while I was loading the car in the mornings.
Tico used to go visiting too- I don't live far from Morrisons in Hillsborough, and one day I turned round to fetch something off a shelf there and when I turned back he was sitting in my trolley.
He used to cross roads properly- none of the usual cat 'pelt across the middle' crossing for him. He sat on the edge of the road and waited for a gap, unless he was with me and then he walked almost to heel, wherever I went- however far from home that may have been (and if I went in a shop or someone else's house while we were out, he'd expect to be allowed in too).
He went all sorts of places whilst doing publicity for the Shelter, including to churches for the pet service (he could outdo a choir and an organ during the hymns, being Burmese) and he would travel in the car watching the world going by, and walk on a harness and lead when we got to our destination.
One of my friends has a cat that gets in the bath with her and has on many occasions been away with her for the weekend. She has the cat trained to come to a whistle, so that she can let the cat out while they're away and the cat won't get lost.
The farthest mine have been is to Chapel St Leonards!. Bit of a bore, but they love to just play with the grass. Never experienced it at home, being indoor cats.

ours disappeared for 2months (he had been to various shelters for cats and rspca) then came back with a purple collar and called fluffy. found out he'd been visiting a female cat on regular and bcos of him always losing his collar they took him in as a stray, bless we got him back but minus his balls.
My cat freaked out when I tried to put a harness on her in the house... they'd totally freak out if I took them anywhere :o
The furthest they've been is to Hillsborough and back for the V.E.T
Yellowrose 17-12-2006, 15:07 Our cats have lived with us in NE Derbyshire, Essex and Doncaster as well as Sheffield. When we moved back to Doncaster, we did a weekend visit before the big move, with the cats. We were staying with a relative who only let the cats in her conservatory (which was a porch really!). One escaped and we looked all over for him. Unfortunately he had the Essex tag on him and someone tried to trace us there. He had gone to the other end of Armthorpe (a couple of miles) to a lady's house who kept several cats. We caught up with him after about 7 weeks and he pretended not to know us at first!!
His brother has never strayed very far and although he got out, he was too fond of his food to go far.
Ours have enjoyed a short bus journey to Hunters Bar annoying all the passengers by miaowing every thirty seconds all the way there. They were a bit subdued on the way back fortunately.

Aren't you ever worried about people out with dogs:confused: That's the one thing that puts me off taking mine out on leads - I know that they'd be by me so I could protect them if necessary but if I'm walking my dogs and another dog snaps at them my dogs will tell it where to go and ignore it and because dogs understand the same language, they're ok. I'd be concerned that my cats wouldn't be able to stand up to a dog that snapped at them.
Of course the cats we have right now won't go anywhere near me when I have a harness in my hand and if they saw a dog I'd end up torn to rags
oooh just to add, my little Smudge cat always used to come out with my sister and I on bike rides... she loved it but she did get in the way - loved running under the wheels lol
The cats at the yard always follow us accross the fields to get the horses at night but apart from that never seem to leave the farm.

no dogs arnt a worry, cats are usually in my arms :hihi: when i say i take em for a walk it shud really be i take them for a pick up LOL they only walk when its quiet like on a field or the beach, Salem likes walking on walls like kids do. Misty doesnt go out now shes grown cos she would shred me to bits, she only really goes round the caravan site. if i do happen to spot a dog while the cats are walking i pick them up.

aaah I see...
I was picturing the whole lead and harness.
My cats would shred me to bits if I tried to pick them up. Smudge didn't used to mind but Smitch has always hated being handled - she loves fuss, but on her terms and from arm's length :hihi:
I always wonder where cats go at night, and what they do. I'd love to stick some sort of camera device on my cats head, and see what the hell he does all night!!
ash:)

yes they do have the whole lead and harness thing, i cant put them down to walk when its busy cos people seem to not see them :( and toddlers seem to pop from now where and try picking them up. Misty is the same she doesnt like fuss except on her terms. now she is bigger i have to put her in the pet carrier just to get her out the door and into the car, she goes mental and i cant hold her without being slashed to smitherenes once out tho she calms down. :)
Jabberwocky 20-12-2006, 09:44 My cat has gone on tour. He went out on Monday and hasnt been back since.
Im... slightly worried about him because its freezing outside.
awww jab ya must be rate worried. I hope he comes back safe and sound very soon hunny
xxxxxxx
Ooooh- I hope he comes back soon (and with a belly full of someone else's tuna and big smile too) to stop you worrying about him.
Jabberwocky 20-12-2006, 10:05 Thanks for that. My other half is going to take a walk around the area to see if hes laying by the side of the road or soemething, I cant go because the state of my eyes means I could probably walk right past him and not see him.
I know its "Only a cat", as some people would say, but Im rather attached to him. After losing my son 5 years ago, I rather assumed that the loss of a pet wouldnt bother me but it has.
On a lighter note, he went missing for four days last year and came waltzing back in as if nothing had happened. Im hoping thats going to be the case this time.
Of course he's 'not just a cat'- he's a family member that just happens to have fur.
The most effective time to call out for them is very late at night or very early in the morning when the background noise is least and your voice or tin rattle will carry best.
Crossing everything for you and him.
Jabberwocky 20-12-2006, 19:17 Sorry for being so off topic, but just to let you know the piglet is back.
He came in about 15 minutes ago, stinking of petrol and ravening for food- he was so hungry that he was even nice to me! I assume hes been locked in a garage or something.
Crisis over! Im now officially in a good mood.
wayyyy hayyyy so pleased to hear it
big hugs for ya both xxxxxxxxx:love:
Thats great Jabber, glad he's back
glad to hear it, its also suprising that he was nice to you when he strolled back in. Normally they just pop in as if nowt's happened, look you in the eye, to say 'sup wi you' then sleep:hihi:
