View Full Version : When will Daisy Bark?
Daisy is 18 weeks old on Wednesday, and she hasn't so much as uttered a bark. Is this normal? Have I just got a quiet dog, although I must say she makes up for this in her boisterousness, or do i need to look into this further? Not that I am especially bothered about her not barking, and to be honest its something I have never thought about....until now!

Pippo did not bark for some three years of me getting him, even when mixed with other dogs outdoors it was rare for him to bark?
And if someone knocked on my door he still would not bark, then i took in for a short period another dog to help someone out.
The dog use to bark at the slightest noise and pippo joined in the barking.
Now pippo barks at noises he hears in and outside the house,
i am sure he learnt this from the other dog.
So i would not worry about Daisy. :)
What breed is she?
Some breeds are renowned for being exceptionally quiet
I think Brude gave himself a shock the first time it happened, and when he was still rabbit sized, I caught him sitting on the bed admiring himself in the mirror and experimenting with different barks
beckelina 15-12-2006, 12:50 Our dogs that we have owned in the past have varied greatly in noisy-ness! Our labrador-type dogs have always been more vocal than our collie-type dogs - I think there are few things more amusing than seeing your dog's face the first time it barks and wondering what the chuff that was coming out of his mouth!
I have also noticed they tend to learn from other, older, dogs what kind of noises they can make and then it depends on the reaction they get from their 'pack' how their speaking develops.

Thanks for your replies guys, can't wait to see her reaction when she does bark.

carpetviper 15-12-2006, 15:12 Our dog does this kind of whine thing and I swear she's trying to talk. plus she seems to bark in a different way for different things it might just be I have a weird dog but she is a staffy cross Gsd so she's bound to be a little tapped
We have a labrador, an old lady now though. It took her ages to bark too.It was a kind of squeak when she did tho! She hardley ever barks now though, not even if someone comes to the door, she just lays there! Not a good security dog! But shes my baby!
When I was a kid I had a booked called 'Only One Woof' - think it was by the vet James Herriot. Anyway, the star of the show was a sheep dog that only barked once in it's entire life.
I wish mine wouldn't bark...
Her pedigree name is 'Oh So Quiet' I knew it was tempting fate
You'll probably find that as she finds her feet in the pack she will start to bark and you will understand the different sorts of barks.
You'll probably also find it's a good sign - you're doing things right :) She will, in time learn to bark when playing, but a quiet dog is usually a happy and unconcerned dog :D
Get ready though. I bet it won't last forever :P

I have 2 labradors. One didnt bark until 8th month and my other one was 2 years old. My labradors hardly bark at unless occasionally another dark barks and they cant see it. Dont worry, its normal :)

She is 2 on the 16th August!
She has barked about three times since the origin of this thread!! Naturally quiet me thinks, totally laid back, and absolutely gorgeous. My Daisy.

holidayhutch 14-07-2008, 21:16 Merlin our Border Collie took just over 4 years before his first bark. Spotted a fly one day on the ceiling and fell over frightening himself when he let out an almighty deep bark at it:hihi:

That's just reminded me- Ailsa the daft dobermutt didn't start barking til she was about 4-5 months old and first time she did it she looked so suprised afterward, she didnt do it again for ages! Of course, she never bloomin shuts up these days, or so it seems!

spottie2101 25-09-2008, 10:43 My foster i have in at the moment is deaf and i have never heard her bark and can count on one hand how many times she has made any sound its usually when she is excited about her walk.
Aparently this can be quite common in deaf dogs but as she is my first its a learning curve for me.
