Whistling, you mean SQUEALING :hihi:

this from canadablade, made me think

I have got to raise this point. some one has brought a book out about Sheffield United, backed by (shaun) the (sean bean).

Now one of the questions was who was the first to be called the pigs and why. the answer was "i dont know but we was called the pigs (united) because our shirts being red ane white looked like rashers of bacon running round th pitch." which is close enough, he gave a very vague notion of why Wednesday was called the pigs, but didnt know why for sure... neither do i for sure, but i do have a notion, which was not the answer he gave.

Bacon is red and white, so why is Wednesday (Blue and White) called the pigs.

So hense- the piggie wednesday!!!

Well if we are going to talk facts, theres a couple or three that go against that, ....but never mind that for now.

Because it's an insult. Police are also called pigs, so why not your local rival team?

Ohh that old chesnut. Another myth is that no-one has seen proof (I wonder why)

I don't think there are any 'facts' either way, but the Blunts shirts resemble bacon streaks - which in my eyes, makes them the grunters.

A more interesting question, for several reasons, would be to ask why people think calling other people pigs is even an insult. Pigs are noble creatures. The farmers who leave them to stew in piles of their own filth clearly aren't, but why do we blame the pig?

Only proves one thing, that.

If it's the ANNUAL Hillsborough Hog Day, it's only once a year - so that must be the day when the pigs from across the city visit...

No :)

But I'm guessing you're not quite as comfortable about staying up as you were this morning, now that the distance from the relegation zone has slipped from 6 to 3 points, and you're guaranteed to drop a place tomorrow night whatever happens!

Mike Parry on talk radio said Wednesday are a much bigger club than united, always has been, always will be........ so there it must be true

Its true, they have a bigger fan base, better crowds until this season, bigger debt, a bigger stadium (even if its falling to bits and needs repairs that the club cant afford ) and have always had bigger players (Pressman and Waddle come to mind :hihi: )
Lets not forget the bigger training ground ( for now anyways :o )

And whats that old chesnut of a saying "The bigger they are the further they fall"

Can I just say, whilst the waddler(PBUH) may well have clapped on the weight like a depressed cake shop assistant since he stopped playing, in his glory he was always in pretty trim shape.

Pressman on the other hand.....

Who is Mike Parry?

Wikipedia:-

“To sum Parry up, he's a truly woeful example of the true football fan the media needs. He harks on about having a season ticket at Everton even though he rarely attends home games, and for away games, he attends matches in hospitality suites due to his sycophantic nature. Thus Mr Parry is the proverbial prawn sandwich 'follower' who is of course ill-informed regarding football. This was exemplified when he failed to admit that Liverpool were a bigger club than Everton, laughably arguing a case for Everton being the dominant club on Merseyside when they're more of a peripheral existence”

If Mike says wedsnay are a bigger club it must be true.

lol, that made me laugh, twasn't a bad comeback for an oinker.

also.... to the lot reciting cup final..... you hate us more blah blah effin' blah - I hate it when any Sheffield fan goes off like this.

Maybe with Barnsley, Rov'rum and Donny where any Sheffield game is practically a jubilee and an FA Cup final rolled into one.

Its the Sheffield derby! the Sheffield rivalry! Wednesday v United!
Nobody should be ashamed to admit it gets the pulses racing and is a game bigger than any other.

My idea of the perfect football season is United nicking the title from Wednesday by a point on the last day; I'd hope that yours is the same scenario on reverse. My mum's ex, on the other hand, thought the ideal season would be Wednesday going bankrupt and being kicked out of the league, regardless of what happened to United; and yet he claims to be a Blades fan. :loopy: :loopy:

The only sense in HAVING a chief rival is so we can play and beat them on a regular basis, preferably in the top division. If either Sheffield team had been in the Premiership/Division 1 all its life and the other one had never made it there, they wouldn't even BE rivals, any more than Arsenal and Brentford are.

Up the Owls! Just not as far up as the Blades :hihi:

Absolutely.

There is nothing wrong with a bit of banter-god knows, Ive indulged in enough of it in my time.

But when I hear words like "hate" bandied about, it just puzzles me:confused: A lot of my friends support the blades, good friends-should I hate them because they support the 'wrong' team?

There is no cache in supporting a particular team-if your a true fan you support them, invariably, because of family traditions or because you grew up in an Owls or a blades area(OK I know this isn't always the case, but you get the drift). What I'm trying to say is, whichever team you support, it doesn't reflect ANYTHING about what type of person you are.

Unless of course you a Rotherham fan-we don't even want to go there:gag:

Definately! Like you say if one team were in the prem, the other in the conference they'd be no rivalry. I maintain that if we managed to sneak promotion i'd want you to say up.

Absolutely.

Thats true - Only really really sad people genuinely 'hate' their football rivals.

I heard of a few cases where Wednesday / United fans refuse to go to Sheffield derbies because they 'hate' the other that much! WTF is that all about.

One thing that has always made me laugh is at the derbies.

One minute....on the phone to friends / family "I'm waving can you see me?"
Next minute......"Piggy $£"^**%!!"
Then the same at half time

Ive posted this once but it just seems in a poor thread.

Well i have got maps of Hillsborough from 1850 and 1902, there are no buildings on the land where the Wednesday ground is whatsoever, and in 1850 the land from the point of leppings lane to Broughton lane including all Hillsborough Park belonged to James Dixon a silver smith.

James Dixon sold the park to the corporation soon after when Sheffield expanded the city boundaries for what was said to be a quite considerable amount, And around 1898/9 sold 10 acres of land to The Wednesday for £10,000, said to be “meadow land covered in dandelions”.

Herries road did not exist that is marked as a footpath. Opposite what would be the ground where the fair is, that is marked as “new dam”, and at the side of that Wardsend steel works.

Hillsborough is a very industrial area full of Foundries, Steelmaking, Brickyards, but no Farms at all, the nearest seems to be up Wadsley lane and Longley.

In 1850 from the river to the point of Leppings lane and Penistone road there is 2 buildings on one half acre plot, about where the shop is now and that is marked pump,

In 1850 the bridge at Leppings Lane is not there it is just marked stepping stones, but in 1902 the bridge is built.
