View Full Version : Cynical thoughts and a good day to bury bad news carcrash 14-12-2006, 12:55 So at the same time that the Diana Report comes out, blair is questioned by the police over the cash for honours scandel and the government tell us that we are going to lose another 2500 post offices Tony 14-12-2006, 13:09 I was thinking the very same thing myself. Guaranteed and predictable headlines for 2/3 days on a topic totally under control. What a good day to bury bad news eh? StarSparkle 14-12-2006, 13:19 What with all this Litvinenko business, the Ipswich murders and now the Princess Diana Report, goodness only knows what's been going on under the radar this month :( StarSparkle happyhippy 14-12-2006, 13:48 Are you insinuating that this has happened before? Ahem. Heyesey 14-12-2006, 14:24 Are you insinuating that this has happened before? Only for about forty years or so, that I know of. Sutcliffe 14-12-2006, 14:27 I can't remember the subject, or the characters involved, but there was a wonderfully embarrassing leaked cabinet email that showed some underling suggesting that some bad news be leaked out on a particular day for just this reason - but it went badly wrong when the email was leaked out. carcrash 14-12-2006, 14:33 It was on the day of the world trade centre attack. Jo Moore's 9/11 email. Within two hours of the hijacked planes smashing into the Twin Towers, Jo Moore sent an email to a colleague at the Department of Local Government, Transport and the Regions saying: "Today is now a very good day to get out anything we want to bury." It laid bare not only her own crass insensitivity but the cold stony heart of the New Labour spin machine. It ought to have brought about her immediate resignation and that of the Secretary of State, Stephen Byers, who had the appalling judgement to employ her. In fact both continued in their jobs until a similar furore blew up the following year over an attempt to bury more bad news under the cover of Princess Margaret's funeral, at which point the press decided it was now time to bury Jo Moore StarSparkle 14-12-2006, 14:41 It was on the day of the world trade centre attack. I bet those in government and their advisers positively drool with glee at such times, thinking what they can get away with while all eyes are elsewhere. I suspect there are a very large number of more subtle Jo Moores in politics and PR and the media. StarSparkle Sutcliffe 14-12-2006, 14:41 It was on the day of the world trade centre attack. AtticusFinch 14-12-2006, 14:50 Not only are the Diana report and the post office closures in the news today, but today is a Thursday. As Prime Minister's Question Time is every Wednesday, the best day to release news like this so it will be most forgotten by the next PMQs is on a Thursday. Politics eh? happyhippy 14-12-2006, 14:55 Only for about forty years or so, that I know of. A wild underestimate ....... Tony 14-12-2006, 14:58 Yep, that's about it. the papers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday all have different outlooks, so each will have to cover it fully which puts us right into next week before anyone remembers how New Labour is going to close 3,000Post Offices and that the Met have pulled Mr Blair in for questioning. carcrash 14-12-2006, 14:59 As Prime Minister's Question Time is every Wednesday, the best day to release news like this so it will be most forgotten by the next PMQs is on a Thursday. I think yesterdays PMQ's was the last until next year carcrash 14-12-2006, 16:55 It gets better, the serious fraud office have cancelled an investigation into bribery with the Saudi"s and BAE systems. They were close to finding out the truth about 100 million in bribes but today at 5.30 they pull the investigation. http://www.guardian.co.uk/armstrade/story/0,,1952407,00.html Heyesey 14-12-2006, 17:08 It laid bare not only her own crass insensitivity but the cold stony heart of the New Labour spin machine. To be fair to New Labour, the only difference between them and the old Tories, and Callaghan's and Wilson's governments before that, and Heath's before that, and.... ...is that New Labour haven't even bothered to disguise the fact that's what they do. The Saudis say 'stop investigating the massive frauds that involve us or we stop playing' and Blair says 'okay then'. dkhank 14-12-2006, 23:26 So at the same time that the Diana Report comes out, blair is questioned by the police over the cash for honours scandel and the government tell us that we are going to lose another 2500 post offices i agree. they must think that we are all thick as s*** Heyesey 15-12-2006, 01:32 i agree. they must think that we are all thick as s*** Most people are. cgksheff 15-12-2006, 09:52 "Downing Street was immediately plunged into a row over allegations that it had chosen the day of the publication of Lord Stevens's report into the death of Diana, Princesss of Wales in an attempt to "bury the bad news" of the police interview."
