Hi Mark Tapton School has club nights - fridays I think. Courts are ok - a little slippy as synthetic.

I work at the sports facility at hallam uni you con come and play b'minton here. Theres two sites, at ponds street and at collegiate cresent. Its £3 per person but max price per court of £6 so you can play double fairly cheaply. Racket hire is a quid and we also sell shuttles for £1:25.

To book or for more info call us on 2252449

Mark,

Abbeydale do have club nights throughout the summer, with different standards catered for:

Monday & Wednesday - social players
Tuesday - Club team standard
Thursday - Feathers (team standard)

Visitors are welcome - just turn up anytime from 7:30ish on a relevant night.

The club is in the purpose built badminton hall (5 courts) in Abbeydale Park Sports Club off Abbeydale Road South and is the biggest in Sheffield.

For details of all clubs in Sheffield and other Sheffield badminton information (including league tables), go to http://www.sheff-bad.co.uk.

Hi peeps,
Anyone go to ponds forge and want to meet up one evening for a game of badmington?
We can share the cost.
(am average player, not league level [dont think], but do have hand to eye co-ordination if you know what i mean!) :o)
Male or female (go on prove me wrong about women!) ;0)
just for fun (and fitness)
Thanks

Tried to PM back but am not at required number of posts yet so was blocked. Will be on holday for 2 weeks in August so was thinking of starting in September at Pond's Forge - How about once a fortnight on Tuesday evenings? It would be good if we could interest more people and maybe book more than one court so we could swap around. I have played mixed games socially before and I think it works best when you can play people of same and different abilities - its more interesting that way. What do you think? PS haven't checked prices/booking arrangements at Pond's Forge yet.

Hey, Frankieboy. Seems that I can't send pm's as I haven't sent or received enough mails? Anyway, yes...interested in badminton but not until next week at earliest. Favour midweek game. Notice from your previous mails that u r a biker? What u ride?

hi guys,
thanks for replies.
as I am on hol end of august aswell how about penciling in for 1st tues in sept - 7th.
that way we have something solid to aim for and hopefully it isnt to far away. Should give my shoulder some time to heal up a bit to.
If you want a game before that fafner100 (or you to spinac) we could pencil in for say tues in two weeks? 10 august.
As far as I remember is £7.00 for court £2 deposit for raquet if you need (have some shuttles + think you get one with the Raquet/court) dont finish work till 6.30 so would need to be 7pm+
How does that suit you guys?
when we've sorted a date + time I'll book a court. (better than turning up and finding they're full)
ps fafner100, unfortunatley had to sell bike when I moved to sheffield. Was chop. Yam XS750 engine, rear end cut and hardtailed, extended front end straight through exhausts and ape hanger bars.
got stuck in nightmare two weeks ago trying to get from one side of meadowhall to other (as I am no mall freak I had no idea!!) 1 1/2 hours I was sat there! seriously, almost got out and left the car there. (is convertable and had stereo full blast but was still sooooo frustrating especially when you are used to slipping down the side of stupid people in cars!! :) )It really hit home then. I have started looking for another bike now. Wouldn't mind another Triumph or maybe even try a Harley. (anyone got a spare in the shed?)

29-07-2004, 16:26
Hey Frankieboy 10 August would suit me for a game. I'm on hol end of Aug for two weeks also. 7 / 7.30pm would be fine at Ponds Forge.

BTW I ride a Honda FVR800Fi....not your cup of tea by the sounds of it...but I like it!

spinac
30-07-2004, 12:50
cool - trial game on 7th sep sound's great. I haven't played for a while but I'm sure I can still play a half decent game.

I'm working on a website to put players in touch with event organisers which hopefully will provide a way for mixed groups to play sport and socialise. I'm thinking of badminton and other sports. I have seen other threads where someone tries to get something going but it really takes someone to make a decision and go for it. So let's make this work.

Won't be able to swap bike talk with you though as I only ever had a 100cc runabout. Managed to get airborne once though on a raised mini-roundabout that used to be a painted circle. (Landed upright).

I see there are now 4 of you organised into a group, but should you need another to play, I'd like to meet up. I've only been playing about 4 months but I can hold my own.
Tuesday night is the only night I cannot make, as i play doubles then.
But if interested, then send an e-mail to lee.sutton@gmail.com.

Hope to see you sometime.

I've booked a single court for next Wed (8th) at Ponds Forge starting at 8.00 so we would need to get there, changed and ready to start. Can you let me know if you will be turning up. I guess we can just suss each other out this time, but maybe arrange 2 sessions or 2 courts if we get regular players. We can swap around so everyone gets a fair chance at a game. I'll be easy to spot - the one with the Andre Agassi hairstyle http://www.homedotennis.hpg.ig.com.br/images/agassi.jpg I wear glasses and he might be taller but not as good looking.

We currently have 5 players for tomorrow (wed) at Pond's Forge. Could manage one more if anyone wants to join us - we'd play doubles and rotate play for 2 sessions (from 8 to 9.30). OK so I forgot about the England game - is it on live? Dare you watch anyway?

great game last night guys (although i was more rusty than i thought! - it's so emabarassing when you line up for a smash, miss, and the shuttlecock lands on your head - i blame the lighting) we were all keen to make a regular game of this so i will start a new thread for next week's game

spinac
09-09-2004, 08:16
Hi all - for anyone interested in taking up badminton, we have the beginnings of a regular club - we had a great game last night with everyone who played keen to play again next week. I'll book a court for 2 sessions from 8 to 9.30 next wed (15th Sep). If we get enough people who will definitely turn up, we could book a second court so we can mix the teams up more. Don't be shy - give it a go!

spinac
12-09-2004, 13:27
Hi players - I know there a few who are keen to play again, however this week seems to be out of the question for most due to other commitments. How about we play again on Wed 22nd Sep?. If you would like to join us and haven't played in a while don't worry - this is a social game for improvers - guys and gals welcome (and left or right handed eh frankie?) Will need at least 4 definite players before i book the court. Cheers, Ken

Where is it and what do i need(money/equipment-can i hire)?

spinac
13-09-2004, 19:21
Hi Mark, you'll be welcome to come along - you can hire raquets from Pond's Forge for £1 (£5 refundable deposit). We share costs on the court which will be £3.45 if you are on court playing doubles for the full session - less if more people turn up (and more if you play singles all night - hopefully not the case). No dress code as we're not playing in a league - any old t-shirt will do (and indoor trainers). We meet just before 8 in reception or just go through to the main sports hall and ask for the Forum group. Will probably go for a beer afterwards ... Cheers, Ken www.spinac.com

Playing Badminton with feathers is a much faster game, the shuttle flies so much better than plastic ones.

I have, however, discovered that only the top teams play with feathers, and are definately TOP teams!! Where I am from, everyone plays with feathers whatever league they are in!

23-09-2004, 06:44
... yeah we used feathers last night - I thought we'd give it a try - maybe I got some cheapos but they were falling apart nearly every game - well I now have 4 out of 6 that are unusable. Great game though everybody - I can see Mark improving fast and good to see you Frankie playing right handed again. Be modest funkyukgal - don't tell anyone the score. Great game James (especially when we got off the 0-0 start!) and Pranav those hand slapping celebrations are getting harder! No badminton this week as Ponds Forge sports hall is out of action (special events on). Will let you know about next week. Who could play at Hillsborough Leisure Centre?

Orko
12-10-2004, 20:56
Is anyone else getting a bit annoyed by Ponds Forge?

Why you can't play badminton at a regular time every week is beyond me. This week they have an event on that covers Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Fair enough so they have to get the reddies in somehow and they have to cover a large range of activities, but I need to book to get a court (so they're not short on demand) and then I pay (compared to, say, Hillsborough Leisure Centre) a fair wack more for 15 minutes less court-time.

Last week I went along to be told that they booked us a court when the hall wasn't being used for badminton, so that was another week I couldn't play - AND despite taking my phone number with the booking they waited until I got there to tell me this!!

Are there no other large halls in such a vast building for big events?

I know, I'm whinging, and all I have to do is go elsewhere but it's so much closer than any other of the city's facilities.

I highley recomend Springs Leisure Centre at the top of East Bank Road.
They have a really nice gym and is a lot cheaper than Ponds Forge or Hilsborough. Costs just £5.35 for a sessions. The courts are nicley marked out and if you want you can hire rackets for FREE.

Check it out.

And Springs is close to the City Centre.

Nearly ran out of options here, but the good news is I may be able to get courts at Sheffield University between 7.00 and 8.00 next Thu. I will be able to confirm tomorrow.

Pond's Forge Sports Hall is out of action for 2 months due to other events (Sharks matches, indoor bowling) Hillsborough doesn't have availability due to block bookings, neither does Hallam University. I checked out Springs Leisure Centre but the place is very unwelcoming on a dark night with dodgy characters hanging round the car park drinking cans of beer. I was told a lot of money had been spent on this leisure centre but it has the feel of a troubled school on a bad estate from the outside so I didn't check any further - it's not really the kind of place to meet socially.

So let's hope I can get in at Sheff Uni (Goodwin Sports Centre on Northumberland Road) http://www.shef.ac.uk/usport/map.html Will post update tomorrow

Agreed - I don't think of Pond's Forge as a Leisure Centre anymore. It's run by Sheffield International Venues and their focus is obviously not catering for the local community. I just tried to book badminton for next thu and found out the main hall is closed for 2 months (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16949)

Hi all,

I managed to get 2 courts booked from 7-8pm next Thu. To make full use of the hour I suggest we meet at 6.50 in the reception area. To get to Goodwin Sports Centre head out of town on the A57 past the Childrens Hospital and take the second right down Northumberland Road. the centre is on the right hand side, but there is off road parking a little further on, on the left. Reception is next to the swimming pool.

Let me know if you can make it. We may have 4 Chinese students joining us. (Hope they're not too good for us)

Cheers,

Ken

hmmm thanks funky - I may be keen but very amateurish and I think you may be hiding your talent to protect others pride But you're right it's just a bit of fun ... tonight we could have 4 6 or maybe 10 people (if the chinese group turns up!). Hope everyone finds us OK (Goodwin Sports Centre is 200 yards down Northumberland Road on right then 75 yards down path on left)

Booking still a problem. Next week I have 1 court from 7.15 to 9.15 at Hillsborough on WEDNESDAY (3rd Nov). Who can make it?

01-11-2004, 08:46
Hi funkyukgal, Hillsborough Leisure Centre is on the Penistone Road on the right before you get to Sheffield Wednesday's ground (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=433592&y=390295&z=0&sv=s6+2AN&st=2&pc=s6+2AN&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf). I've done a quick search for buses and trams - the number 53 is probably your best bet (http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/yorkhumber/southyorkshire/map/overgroundshef_nw.php) as the tram goes along Middlewood Road and you will have maybe half a mile walk from Hillsborough or Leppings Lane (http://www.supertram.com/map.html). Hope to see you on wed at 7.45. Ken

i'll try and keep an eye on this thread coz i fancy a few games but can never do wednesdays. and hillsbrough would take me so long to get to and from. were prob talking `get home, get changed, go out (no food), get there about 8.00 if lucky! then another 2hrs getting back. wud be tired, starving and back in time for bed and work in morning!! hellish!

ive only just bought myself a racquet and plan to play once a week with my lodger.. most likely dronfield sports centre. easy to get to and a few courts.

keep posting where and when and hopefully i will end up getting to one somewhere else.

Hi all,

Scott - you are more than welcome to join us - I have booked 2 courts for next thu (11th Nov) at Goodwin Sports Centre starting at 8.00. I'm sure you'll be able to borrow a raquet or hire from reception but I'll confirm this.

Had a great game last night at Hillsborough but i know the venue (and wed night) doesn't suit everyone - only 4 turned up but we still managed to swap around and enjoy a few long rallies and devious serves ...

Hope we can get 8 or more players next week - let me know if you can make it.

Cheers,

Ken

PS we have an ex badminton coach in the group who may be able to give you some tips if you ask nicely.

Scottandandy - Raquet hire is £2 for the session at Goodwin which is a bit steep (plus £10 refundable deposit). If we get enough players, not everyone will be on court all the time, so you may be able to borrow a raquet.

... we do have mixed ages in the group, but 26 is at the er, lower end ... but age is not the question, its ability ... youth is no substitute for skill ;-)

see you thu

ps is there 2 of you?

Good mix of folks turned up on Thu - hope you had a good game Scott - Miggy what can I say? playing an entire rally on the deck and winning the point!

I'll do my best to keep new people coming - I have a listing in The Star and Telegraph. Bad news for next week though. I can't get a court at Goodwin, Hillsborough, (or Pond's Forge! we know). Club Hallam in City Campus sprang to mind today. So i phoned up and got some info:

Its £3.50 Per Person. As a non-member, to hire a court for 1 hour, id have to call on the day i wanted to play and see if there are any courts available..

Just read back a few posts and read what spinac said!! :D Just got the info for you spinac ;)

im up for Club Hallam. Can play around 7pm or earlier then off to work :)

15-11-2004, 17:50
Hi all,

... thanks for this funkyukgal ... the good news is that I am a member of Club Hallam and can book facilities 6 days in advance wahey!

... but the bad news is that the hall at City is fully booked every night for student groups such as aerobics, football, rowing circuits(!) etc. DOH! The only time we may get is after 6.30 on Fridays at Collegiate Crescent off Ecclesall Road http://www.shu.ac.uk/services/marketing/visit/collplan.html

I think there was a similar problem booking an earlier time at Goodwin - but I'll recheck this. Frustrating eh?

But the government has something to say on this:

"My ambition for sport in the UK is to start a twenty year process of re-establishing this country as a powerhouse in the sporting world". Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in Game Plan: a strategy for delivering Government's Sport and Physical Activity Objectives, December 2002.

To achieve this the Government is investing £2 billion of public and National Lottery money in sport by 2006.

Wonder if we'll see any of this in Sheffield?

So for those who are still with me on this  hope to see you at Hillsborough Leisure Centre at 7.45 on 8th Dec.

PS We then have 15th Dec and take a break until Wed 12th Jan. This will be a weekly booking for 6 months ... so no more worries about where and when we play ... good eh? just sorry it won't suit everyone - Sam (and Miggy?)

I'm interested in joining your group and playing badminton, but I am a beginner (Wednesday's fine for me). Is it ok anyway? You just meet at Hillsborough Leisure Centre (I've never been inside, where do you meet exactely?) or I need to confirm my participation by phone or e-mail. Can I rent a racket there?
Cheers

Hi dymedi,

It would be good to have you along on Wednesday - I think its going to be a busy night, but I'll make sure you get a good introduction to the club. Most players are of a decent standard, but with a little determination and practice you'll soon get into the swing of things. Raquets can be hired for £2 plus £2 refundable deposit. I'll be looking out for 1 or 2 other first time players, so I'm sure you'll find us easy enough. We meet in the main reception area 10 minutes before the first game (7.35 for 7.45 start). Most players come changed and ready to play, but you can get ready in the changing rooms if you wish.

Hope to see you wednesday,

Ken (spinac)

Have a good game.

09-12-2004, 21:48
... cheers Scott, we did! a few new players gave it a try - we were 25% Italian last night (2 out of 8!). There's some good players there as well as a couple of beginners - I keep saying it's a social game, but try stopping folks competing! Mixing partners up is a good format though - I don't think anyone left without a win ... will be playing next week even though 1 or 2 have other commitments being close to Christmas an' all ... hope you can make it

Hi MTheo,

have PM'd you with some details about organising this event, but for the benefit of anyone else who can't make Wednesdays looking for a regular game - sorry and good luck in getting a game elsewhere. It was not possible for me to get a reliable booking at Pond's Forge, Goodwin Sports Centre, Hallam University or Sheffield Sports & Social at Heeley !!!

Getting a block booking at Hillsborough was a godsend and although it doesn't suit everyone, predictability has made it a success. People drop out out quickly if you don't get a regular venue, day and time

I get enquiries from my website www.SpurIntoAction.co.uk and from ads in Telegraph & Star. Less than half the players on Wednesday are from the Forum. If you wanted some help to promote your alternative, I would be happy to discuss this with you. I'm not currently charging a membership fee, but will be doing so to new members soon. (First 100 to register get free year's membership). Event organisers will get 60% of membership fee from anyone they introduce to the group (although you would need to prove your ability to provide a good service and support your members answering enquiries and dealing with any problems).

I'll also be happy to discuss organising other events such as bar nights, comedy nights at The Lescar, meals out, weekends away etc. PM me if you'd like to know more.

Cheers,

Ken

PS However you do it, good luck! Be persistent - "Action is the key to all success"

Ken - I have not played for a few years - but used to play regularly, to a social standard. I can not make it tonight but would love to come next Wednesday, if there is a space of course. Colin.

spinac
12-01-2005, 23:32
Hi Colin,

Will be good to have you along, feel free to just turn up and you will get a game. The only thing to remember is that I'm saying yes to everyone at the moment, but not everyone turns up. 16 people were due to come along tonight, but only 9 did. (I guess tonights downpour put a few off).

If 16 people do turn up one week then there'll be 8 on court at any one time and 8 waiting to play. I reckon the ideal ratio is 8 on 4 off so that you're not waiting too long for your next game and you also get a chance to have a chat between games ...

hey, I see you registered and booked to play at www.SpurIntoAction.co.uk, so you're in pole position.

I've put the idea of pre-booking to others tonight. Not everyone can, as not everyone is online. For those that are online, give it a go and let me know if you have any problems.

Hope you had a good game tonight Scott, Vince nearly persuaded me you were Alex! How did Rachel get on? Anna was glad to have another girl along. Hope she enjoyed it and will give it another try.

Craig - me 'n' Vince will get the better of you 'n' Anna one day! I thought we were in with a chance when we went 4 up ... maybe we'll have to learn back and front play rather than side to side? Will certainly have to learn a better response to that serve of yours!

Anyway, good to see everyone again, hope to see you next week!

Cheers,

Ken

Just wondering - are there many girls that play?! I used to play every week with group of people from work, but have moved again and no-one seems interested.

I'm not great, but very enthusiastic player! Seems silly to have a raquet sitting in back of cupboard unused...

scottf
18-01-2005, 11:45
hi beckyaa, my girlfreind comes with me when we play- it was her first time last week and altho she is a bit rusty she was made to feel very welcome and player for over an hour and a half non stop virtually!! so come along- its a good laugh!!!

spinac
18-01-2005, 19:16
Hi beckyaa,

It is mostly guys at the group, but as Scott says, you'll be very welcome. Just turn up at the reception before 7.45 and our group should be pretty obvious. It's £4 for the session which is one and a half hours long. We play doubles and switch partners after each game to keep things varied. PM me or give me a call if you'd like to know more (tel no on group website www.SpurIntoAction.co.uk)

Hope to see you tomorrow,

Cheers,

Ken

Hi sheffguy,

we play at Hilsborough Leisure Centre from 7.45 and meet in reception 5-10 minutes before that. It's £4 per session (1hr 30min) and I can loan you a raquet if you don't have your own. It's a reasonable standard of play - no absolute novices, but no one you won't take some points off (although I think Craig's working hard to whitewash me sometime soon ...)

Hope you can make it (we have a block booking every wednesday)

Cheers,

Ken

ken - what abut extending it to 3 courts possibly?

spinac
22-01-2005, 10:17
Hi Scot,

I'll check this out soon - if we can definitely get a minimum of 12 players each week. (I reckon this will be achievable).

I spoke to Reg who came along on Wednesday - he runs a club near Rotherham. We both feel there should be a chance to chat to other players between games rather than just play continuously for 90 minutes and then leave. It can be a little bit "sterile" if you know nothing at all about your opponent.

It's a pity there's not a bar at Hillsborough - but maybe we could pop up to the cafe for 15 minutes after the games just to talk about ideas to always keep the club alive and fresh. What do you think? Diet Cokes all round?

Cheers,

Ken

Hi dc1,

You'll be welcome to join my group on Wednesday nights - £4 for 2 sessions doubles play - starts 7.45pm at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. More info at www.SpurIntoAction.co.uk or Forum discussion http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16949

If you were just looking for a venue, you could try Goodwin Sports Centre (part of Sheffield University) 0114 222 6999.

Most places will charge around £6 to £7 for a court per session.

Hi technophobe - you'll be more than welcome to join us - we had 12 players last week and I'm considering booking a third court. Standard is half decent but you'll be paired up with other players in doubles matches so don't worry about being rusty - just give it a go and see how you get on. You would be welcome to come and try our club.

Broomgrove badminton club play on Friday nights from 7 - 10pm.
The charge per night is £3.50 and there is a membership fee of £10 pa (£5 for unwaged). Probably the cheapest badminton per hour you will find..

The facilities are good and there are three courts. We play at the Pearson Building on Broomgrove Road; part of Hallam University. Also we usually meet afterwards for a pint.

If you wish to know more you are welcome to contact me at home on 0114-267-8000.

Hi Gaz,

I've just put in a block booking request for 3rd Monday each month to see how we go. 2 courts from 8 to 9.30pm. Will post reply when I get confirmation of this request.

Dates would be 18th April, 16th May, 20th June. If I get a good response and there are enough players, we could increase this to fortnightly or even weekly.

Any other players very welcome to join us. Details of this and other events on my website - see signature

Hi Donnie,

(I've also PM'd you with this, but info is relevant to anyone who would like to play)

We could previously just turn up but we now have to pre-book. (We had 17 people turn up for just 2 courts last week). Next week I have 3 courts so I have places for 18 people. Let me know if you'd like to play - or register online at www.SpurIntoAction.co.uk - you'll then be able to reserve a place for yourself. We start at 7.45pm. Cost is £4 per player for 90 minutes.

I'm also starting a Monday evening at Concorde from next Mon (18th) - let me know if you'd be interested.

Hope to see you soon.

Hi Crazydoc,

Concorde Sports Centre is north Sheffield at the top of Shiregreen Lane. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=437500&y=392500&z=3&sv=437500,392500&st=4&ar=N&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=730&ax=437198&ay=391932

The Monday nights are up and running - we just have one court at the moment and usually get 4 to 6 players. Standard is half decent for a social group - there is a competitive edge but we only play one game of doubles at a time before changing partners, so you'll get a mix of games in the evening.

We play once a fortnight and you'll be welcome to join us this Monday (20th June) from 8 to 9.30pm.

We also play every Wednesday at Hillsborough from 7.45. There's usually 12 players or so on 3 courts.

Hope you can make it.

Cheers
