I'm making an "alternative" xmas CD, so far I've got:

John Cale - A Child's Christmas In Wales
Josh Rouse - Christmas With Jesus
Flaming Lips - A Chance At Christmas
Sufjan Stevens - Come On! Let's Boogie to the Elf Dance!
Marvin Gaye - Purple Snowflakes
Be Good Tanyas - Rain & Snow

Anyone got any other ideas in a similar vain?

Fairy Tale of New York EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!

One of the best songs ever, let alone christmas songs

Any song with these lyrics deserves the title:-

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Living there almost dead on a drip
In that bed
You scum bag
You maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God
It's our last

Although it isn't really a Christmas song it was mainly the video which gave it its Christmas feeling.

Just Like Christmas by Low is my big dreamy sleighbell drenched fave

and The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot by (I think) Nat King Cole is great if you're feeling kinda downbeat:

"He wrote a note to Santa for some soldiers and a drum
It broke his little heart when he found Santa hadn't come"

and who could forget the greatest Xmas song ever:

Thank God it's not Christmas - Sparks
I was born on Christmas Day - Saint Etienne
Christmas in Prison - John Prine
Christmas in Nevada - Willard Grant Conspiracy
are all Christmas songs with a bit of indie type cred

I also quite like Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie

'December 26, 1943, Humphrey Bogart & His Lady' by The Gunshy off the fantastic 'There's No Love in this war' can probably be classed as a Christmas song and is amazing.

Resurrecting this thread for Christmas 2008. What's your best Christmas song ever?

Mine has got to be The Wombles 'Wombling Merry Christmas'. It sums up Christmas in 1970s perfectly for me.

Enjoy! Bet you will be singing the song all day once you have seen the link above.

Purdy - is that the one with the lyric 'Angels from the realms of glory, stars shone bright above - Royal David's City was bathed in light and love' and a chorus of 'Jesus Christ was born today, Jesus Christ was born'?

If so it's fab and I entirely agree. Having said that I haven't heard the original, but a cover by the criminally underated The Family Cat.

Sonically, there isn't a better sounding Christmas record than Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody. It's got a lovely earthiness to it, almost sounding monaural. It's very simple too in its instrumentation and indeed chord structure. (The pull to the Bb on "everybody's having fun" is what makes the song interesting chord-wise [the song being in the key of G]).

Other favourites are, I'm afraid to admit, Gilbert O'Sullivan's Christmas Song and Greg Lake's I Believe In Father Christmas. Boney M's version of Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord is a favourite too.

But the real Christmas by the fireside favourites are songs - all the classics - sung by the likes of Perry Como, Dean Martin and Doris Day.

Pour me a Bailey's, somebody.

... Greg Lake's I Believe In Father Christmas. ...
Has to be this one.
They said there'd be snow at Christmas
They said there'd be peace on earth
Hallelujah, Noel, be it heaven or hell
The Christmas we get we deserve
Alternatively, I'd plump for the Pogues/Kirsty MacColl one.
...But the real Christmas by the fireside favourites are songs - all the classics - sung by the likes of Perry Como, Dean Martin and Doris Day. ...
As a little kid, I had an old, hand-me-down Andy Williams Christmas album that I played to death throughout December. I suppose my mum must have been glad I hadn't taken a liking to Slade.

In a similar vein, this cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz4oG4eh5J0) and this cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iigfts-sJFg) are lovely. I adore her voice.

It's not a song or specifically seasonal, but the Troika bit from Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kijé Suite" always makes me think of Christmas. No wonder Greg Lake borrowed the riff for his "I believe in Father Christmas".

Apart from that, I agree with discodown that Phil Spector's Christmas album is the benchmark. Ronnie Ronette singing "Frosty the Snowman" certainly gets the shivers running up and down my spine (and it has nothing to do with being cold).
