Ally68 13-12-2006, 10:24 The best has got to be The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York. Another good one is Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love  Although it isn't really a Christmas song it was mainly the video which gave it its Christmas feeling. trophyman 13-12-2006, 10:42 I wish it could be Christmas every day - Wizard Merry Christmas everone - Slade Happy Christmas (war is over) - John Lennon. StarSparkle Dewey Finn 31-10-2007, 19:27 I believe in father christmas by Greg Lake A spaceman came travelling by Chris de Burgh Rich 31-10-2007, 19:37 I used to like the Shakey one, then I grew up and realised how annoyingly cheesy it was! :loopy: Like most of his songs. discodown 31-10-2007, 19:54 Blue Christmas by Elvis purdyamos 31-10-2007, 22:24 'Jesus Christ' by Big Star which no-one has ever heard of is one of the most festive jingly happy sounding songs, and I'm not even remotely religious. But no-one's ever heard of it so it doesn't matter. :hihi: leviathan13 01-11-2007, 09:16 No one ever seems to mention Mistress For Christmas by AC/DC. plekhanov 01-11-2007, 12:33 Thank God it's not Christmas - Sparks I was born on Christmas Day - Saint Etienne Christmas in Prison - John Prine Christmas in Nevada - Willard Grant Conspiracy are all Christmas songs with a bit of indie type cred I also quite like Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie 'December 26, 1943, Humphrey Bogart & His Lady' by The Gunshy off the fantastic 'There's No Love in this war' can probably be classed as a Christmas song and is amazing. Sheff2006 05-12-2008, 06:57 Resurrecting this thread for Christmas 2008. What's your best Christmas song ever? Mine has got to be The Wombles 'Wombling Merry Christmas'. It sums up Christmas in 1970s perfectly for me. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3JaXSDXiGy4&feature=related Enjoy! Bet you will be singing the song all day once you have seen the link above. Halibut 05-12-2008, 07:15 'Jesus Christ' by Big Star which no-one has ever heard of is one of the most festive jingly happy sounding songs, and I'm not even remotely religious. But no-one's ever heard of it so it doesn't matter. :hihi: Purdy - is that the one with the lyric 'Angels from the realms of glory, stars shone bright above - Royal David's City was bathed in light and love' and a chorus of 'Jesus Christ was born today, Jesus Christ was born'? If so it's fab and I entirely agree. Having said that I haven't heard the original, but a cover by the criminally underated The Family Cat. Halibut 05-12-2008, 07:24 Isn't the hairnet great - it was, and I've just downloaded it. Cracking song. Have to say I prefer the Family Cat version though. lubylou 05-12-2008, 13:37 I believe in father christmas by Greg Lake, fantastic song. pitsmoorlad 09-12-2008, 15:53 This has got to be the best Christmas song ever. With the Pogues second, and Chubby Brown 3rd. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MUELu8o5KJg janie48 02-12-2011, 06:56 christmas lights-cold play Bulgarian 02-12-2011, 08:42 christmas lights-cold play I can imagine how cheery that will be. Billy Casper 02-12-2011, 11:27 I believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake Do They Know It's Christmas - Band Aid A Spaceman Came Travelling - Chris de Burgh And...Anything by Bing 'Mr Christmas' Crosby :D Ousetunes 02-12-2011, 12:19 Sonically, there isn't a better sounding Christmas record than Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody. It's got a lovely earthiness to it, almost sounding monaural. It's very simple too in its instrumentation and indeed chord structure. (The pull to the Bb on "everybody's having fun" is what makes the song interesting chord-wise [the song being in the key of G]). Other favourites are, I'm afraid to admit, Gilbert O'Sullivan's Christmas Song and Greg Lake's I Believe In Father Christmas. Boney M's version of Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord is a favourite too. But the real Christmas by the fireside favourites are songs - all the classics - sung by the likes of Perry Como, Dean Martin and Doris Day. Pour me a Bailey's, somebody. missymoo73 02-12-2011, 12:29 Pogues and Kirsty McColl - Fairytale of New York - Love it :) pigster 02-12-2011, 12:40 Pogues and Kirsty McColl - Fairytale of New York - Love it :) Love the pogues, but got to be wizards ,i wish it could be x.mas everyday. missymoo73 02-12-2011, 12:48 Love the pogues, but got to be wizards ,i wish it could be x.mas everyday. JA5E 02-12-2011, 16:19 and the most random post of the day prize goes to.... Chubby Brown is an unfunny fat lard arse who swears profusely for "shock" value IMO. Back on subject, Driving home for Christmas - Chris Rea Hecate 02-12-2011, 16:21 ... Greg Lake's I Believe In Father Christmas. ... Has to be this one. They said there'd be snow at Christmas They said there'd be peace on earth Hallelujah, Noel, be it heaven or hell The Christmas we get we deserve Alternatively, I'd plump for the Pogues/Kirsty MacColl one. ...But the real Christmas by the fireside favourites are songs - all the classics - sung by the likes of Perry Como, Dean Martin and Doris Day. ... As a little kid, I had an old, hand-me-down Andy Williams Christmas album that I played to death throughout December. I suppose my mum must have been glad I hadn't taken a liking to Slade. In a similar vein, this cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz4oG4eh5J0) and this cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iigfts-sJFg) are lovely. I adore her voice. Lestat 02-12-2011, 17:31 Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow! :D taxman 02-12-2011, 18:20 The one I'd put on the record player would be Fairytale of New York. The one I'd inflict on relatives who wont leave would be The Goodies. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzi7YrJN5FI) Lestat 02-12-2011, 19:09 Gotta admit, I like the one from 'The Snowman - Walking in the air' always reminds me of them good old schooldays at Christmas. janie48 02-12-2011, 21:39 Fairy tale of New York ...as others have said before me ...is another favourite of mine. HTM_1983 03-12-2011, 20:50 All I want for Christmas (is you) -Mariah Carey and Fairytale of New York are 2 of my favourite Christmas songs...also like Little Drummer Boy and Stop the Cavelry kirakk 04-12-2011, 22:52 Christmas time (Don't let the bells end) The Darkness. top4718 04-12-2011, 23:53 Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon Fairytale Of New York - Pogues/Kirsty MacColl (although overplayed these days) Gaudete - Steeleye Span (their version of a traditional carol) We always had Jim Reeves Sings Christmas playing in our house as a child, some good ones on there, I also liks Elvis's Christmas Peace album. Lushcannon 05-12-2011, 13:36 Darlene Love...All Alone On Christmas. horribleblob 07-12-2011, 14:17 It's not a song or specifically seasonal, but the Troika bit from Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kijé Suite" always makes me think of Christmas. No wonder Greg Lake borrowed the riff for his "I believe in Father Christmas". Apart from that, I agree with discodown that Phil Spector's Christmas album is the benchmark. Ronnie Ronette singing "Frosty the Snowman" certainly gets the shivers running up and down my spine (and it has nothing to do with being cold). Norbert 08-12-2011, 12:54 The Electric Armpits - Merry Christmas (http://youtu.be/Vl2lKKkSHkI) This timeless classic was recorded in a Handsworth pensioners bedroom in the early 80s and features Azo (of preaching on Fargate with a dwarf fame) on keyboards.
