You can't use them:

on public roads
on public footpaths
in public parks and open spaces
on beaches

You can use them:

on your own land

Not much good if you have a small back yard!

it's only a childs one though isn't it? I would have thought that those rules apply to the larger quad bikes...

Nope. Anything petrol or similar fuel powered. Funnily enough, electric ones are ok though, or they turn a blind eye to them.

Whats wrong with giving a child a good old bicycle?

It may be because it has a petrol engine, what CC is it.

try phoning SY Police on 0114 2202020 for advise but the above advise is correct as its still classed as a road vechile. (sorry about the bad spelling)

GM Police will caution you and issue an abatement order if they catch you using it. If they catch you using it a second time they will prosecute and confiscate the vehicle (according to the web).

I imagine other forces use the same guidelines.

So, you've got one chance. Make the most of it!

I'm sure proper facillities for things like this must exist though - off-road centres for scrambler bikes or something?

Sorry if I came across a little narky but in my position you would feel the same.

Every day we have **** heads ranging from 10 upwards thinking that the playing fields are a great place to ride their quads or crossers.

We have people coming from all over Sheffield desperate to **** people off. There are even gates that try to block the riders from going near the housing estate yet these present no problem. Ternacious little buggers!

I have yet to come across a responsible parent or rider who respects the environment. I have also yet to come across anyone who is insured yet they ride about without a care in the world.

My dog was once hit by a young kid on a quad bike so hopefully you can understand my lack of enthusiasm at your recent purchase. All I have visions of is your wee one growing up and starting to ride bikes at the back of my house!!!
