The Crucible Youth Theatre is one of the best in the country. It has run projects in Japan and Sri Lanka as well as part of their productions. I was a member in my teens performing in Birds, Bees and Bombshells which went on a regional school tour and "...And Anyone Else Who Knows Me..." which went down to Devon for the National Youth Theatre Festival. Also co-designed the light for Falling which was in the main house at the Crucible. The last production I was involved in was Peach Boy as a Stage Manager in my carreer, this was performed in Weston Park as was in association which a theatre in Japan. There is a waiting list but it is worth and sessions are free. For more info write to, Crucible Youth Theatre, Educational Department, Sheffield Theatres, Crucible Theatre, Norolk Street, Sheffield, S1.

There is also a group in Sheffield called Theatre Train which meet at Norfolk Park Pavilon, this is more of a school than a group and charge a small fee.

Websites for the above two are below.

Crucible Youth Theatre

Theatre Traain

Hope this helps

Hi there

I agree with the message above, I don't think that there is anywhere better than the Crucible, however, I went to Caroline Cooper's Theatre School in Broomhill when I was younger and it was certainly an experience. I hadn't been there long before I was hurled into a production at the Crucible called 'The Factory Children' - I didn't go that often as school work began to take its toll, but it was well worth it while I was there :)

I send my children to the Helen O'Grady Drama academy which has only recently arrived in Sheffield. It is run by a man who worked with local touring group Compass Theatre Company for 20 years before deciding to spend more time in Sheffield. The classes are aimed at increasing students' confidence and are really good fun. their end of year productions are going to take place at the Merlin Theatre. Their website is www.helenogrady.co.uk

StarStruck provide community drama workshops for children and young people aged 8 - 16+ in Stannington. They are about life skills through drama (confidence, self discipline, motivation, teamwork) and FUN; do productions where everyone has an equal part; are fully inclusive therefore charge a minimal weekly fee (and if you can't afford it it's free) and have experience in working with and supporting children with special needs including autistic spectrum disorders, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and tourettes.

Run by professional actors, voice training is of high quality, a number of members have gone on to act professionally, and several members have had opportunities to appear in professional productions and to learn teaching and directorial skills.

There is a group called 'Sheffield Youth Theatre' which has been running in Sheffield for over 30 years. They are currently holding auditions, the last one is on 21st of April 2009.

Contact SYT director Meg Jepson for more details;

Sheffield Theatretrain is by far the best youth drama group in sheffield in my opinion. The care and attention given to each child is what makes it really work , all the staff are really nice. Its so much fun for the kids, and really impressive- they get to perform in productions locally and further afield like london! It's reasonably priced i suppose, considering they cover dancing acting and singing, but i think that's a given with most drama groups nowadays.
I think if you type in sheffield theatretrain in google the address and phone number comes up.

Hi
Thank you for your post i will have a look into that. My daughter does not want to do singing and dancing just acting . Do they offer that or do you have to join in everything ? She has been in a couple of short films and really loves that type of acting .
Thanks again :O)

Fusion Youth Theatre is fantastic.
3 hours of singing, acting and dance. Portfolios and the chance for each child to record their own CD!
Its 10:30 - 1pm on a Sunday. £15 per session which is brilliant for what they offer!

With Act One there is the option of achieving LAMDA grades.

Sheffield Youth Theatre do some exciting individual projects - check out their info on the Sheffield Theatres website. We found that Theatretrain used to be good but lost its sparkle when its franchise changed hands a while back. Fusion has had a great start, son really enjoys it - lots of drama , dance and singing, plus individual portfolios. Have a look at their website for details @ fusionyouththeatre.com

Hi SophieHatter - thank you very much for your Fusion recommendation!

I'm one of the co-founders of Fusion Youth Theatre and I can honestly say that we're thrilled with the reception that the group has had since our start in January of this year!

And we're planning to get even better! Our first show is in July - a brand new production celebrating Sheffield's music scene - think of Pulp, Reverand and the Makers, Joe Cocker and Human League - the students love it!

Then in the Autumn term we're planning more exciting workshops, including script writing, song writing, stage combat (after the wonderful reception it received!)

We're also planning a christmas show AND looking into how we can do summer workshops in time for next year. The casting agency is coming on - hopefully to be launched by the end of this year.

We'll have more photography sessions for the portfolios and the second round of recording sessions - the results of some of which may be going on the website shortly.

I'm exhausted just listing all of these things!! Anyone interested is more than welcome to bring their child along on a Sunday morning from 10.30 until 1.30 for a free trial at City Limits on Penistone Rd. Even this term it's not too late - we've made a promise that any new student will be involved in the show even though rehearsals have already started.

Thanks,
Heidi

If you want just acting & drama try Act One Drama Studio. They run classes & workshops for 4 years to adult, at really good prices. They are drama based rather than performing arts. My nephews go and they have a lot of fun and love it!

I would have thought this will be the best quality drama class for children in Sheffield at the moment. Certainly the most experienced and high profile tutors.

Sorry to say theatretrain no longer runs in Sheffield.

We here at Fusion have just finished our first show and it was fantastic - an original musical titled 'London Road'. The students all had an amazing time. We're off for the summer now, but will be back next term with an even more action packed curriculum and show!

If you can't wait that long look out for us in the Meadowhall Talent Academy where we're running loads of free workshops!!

I'm another who can't recommend Fusion enough. My wee lad enrolled purely to get a little confidence, and now he's really come out of his shell. He thoroughly enjoyed being part of 'London Road', and having just read the prospect of a Christmas show is now champing at the bit :hihi:

Well done to all the staff and students, it was an excellent show!!!!

Sheffield Academy of Performing Arts (SAPA) opens on 13th May 2012. It is a stage school with a difference, offering expert training for 6 - 17 year olds in singing, dance and drama. SAPA is affiliated to Mark Jermin Management , a successful casting agency, that provides auditions for TV adverts, programmes and films.

The ethos of the Academy is to offer a wide and versatile education in the performing arts while having fun; improving technique and confidence and offering pupils valuable performance opportunities.

The stage school is on Sundays from 2pm till 5pm at King Edward VII Upper School in Broomhill.

SAPA is considerably cheaper than Stagecoach. Open day is half price, £6 (under 10s) and £12 (10s and over).

If you would like further information please call 07889845013, email info@sheffieldapa.co.uk or visit www.sheffieldapa.co.uk.
