View Full Version : Violence on TV
My opinion on this is that as long as it's late enough things should be left uncut. I think that too many cuts ruin a good film/programme. I am tired of the likes of 'may I take your hat sir'.
I have decided to create a poll.
We have a 9pm watershed so any violence on TV after that is okay and if you don't like watching a show with violence in it turn over or simply turn it off.

You're saying that everything pre-9pm is safe for kiddies to watch :?:!:
DaBouncer 07-07-2003, 08:24 On a similar note, I think those people who subscribe to SKY should be allowed to watch Big Bro on E4 without cutting the sound, no matter what time of day and especially after 9pm!
On the violence thing I agree with Lickszz... cutting films gore scenes even after 9pm is stupid!
I just read that Driller Killer was released in 1999 after being banned for 20yrs only on the condition that a scene showing the ddrill entering the skull was cut!
So glad I own the Region 1 (USA) version of the film!
I find all this pro-violence talk disturbing. Don't you all think even pre-watershed viewing is getting more violent / cynical?
Even some of the newer Simpsons episodes are over stretching the mark. And how does all this onscreen violence manifest itself in the minds of young children...:o

Can't be helped, it is to do with the fact that C4 or the housemates may get sued for slandering and other such things.

Abby I agree with you. Luckily my kids watch very little TV because we as parents hardly have the telly on. They have the choice to watch or not and thankfully most times they choose to do other things.
Programmes like Emmerdale that used to be so innocent, now contain material/issues that I don't want my youngsters to have to confront yet.
miniminch 31-03-2005, 23:03 Has modern television gone too far this time. Eastender is getting more and more violent in a bid to chase the ratings- Where will it end and is TV a refection of society or society a reflection of TV. I discovered this today. Even i draw the line here.
Shock as BBC screens "Klu Klux Klan - The Musical"
Earlier today the BBC has caused a major storm after refusing to back down over its decision to screen an uncensored performance of Klu Klux Klan - The Musical.
A horrifed viewer told The Mail "The show contains 1,247 hangings, 4,456 rapes, and more than 1,289,000 swear words - and that's just in the first song!"
The outraged viewer added "I most certainly will be recording the whole program, so that I can count and catalogue every act of profanity and violence personally!"
BBC4 will cause more controversy next month by airing a little known and recently found Derek Jarman film, ****ing ****. The 125-minute film features the two aforementioned disgusting swear words written on a caption in the Gill Sans Bold font. Background and foreground colours of the caption then slowly change throughout the film's duration, to a musical soundtrack by Mike Batt.
Controller of BBC4 Roland Keating, acknowledged that the film "would not suit all tastes" but defended its strong language strenuously, emphasising that the piece "only contained two swear words".
"There's certainly no pleasing some *****" he added.
too far this time?

muddycoffee 31-03-2005, 23:11 Why do you watch it?
I often go 2 to 3 weeks without seeing any television. And it's only the fact that I'm in someone else's house which makes me watch it at all.
Don't get me wrong I do have one, I would be weird not to, I just never want to watch it....
and rarely do.

Cutglass 31-03-2005, 23:25 Now the time of posting the original thread was just after 12.00, which would make it officially Aprils Fools Day, sounds suss to me
Or is it indeed all true?!?!? :heyhey:
Obviously there is far too much violence on the telly, on the streets, playground, workplace....etc....etc...
But at least on the telly you can always switch off, you cant switch your kids eyes off to the stuff they see on the streets around them every day

The simple matter of the fact is this:
If something is violent or is going to offend you in any way shape or form.. DONT ****N WATCH IT!
The censors spoil everything- we in this country should have the right to see a horror film in its UNCUT version.. we should have that right, and no-one should take that away from us.
Dont complain about something because it offends you on TV if you have just watched it- seriously, just dont.
I'd like to vote for it being just fine as it is, but apparently that idea passed the pollsetter by
NEKRO138 07-04-2005, 14:29 Firstly, if you don't like films with violent themes, don't watch them. If you decide, you will watch a film like 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' or something, don't be shocked when you see an arm off here and there!
Secondly, why take a violent film and cut bits out? People are watching it for the violence as well as the other things depicted.
The on/off button on your television = self-censorship.
tv uses violence (and sex) to sell. There is no need for violence, sex, swearing unles its for a reason. Look at Will Smith. One of the best rappers around and he has no need for any of that.
NEKRO138 08-04-2005, 08:15 Yeah look at Will Smith, he's the same character in every film and one of the best rappers around? Granted at the moment, rap is suffering badly but to say Will Smith's one of the best is ridiculous.

that's a circular argument. there's no need for anything, unless there's a reason (or need in other words) for it. :loopy:
