View Full Version : Plus.net - Are they reliable?

So, we can now get conventional ADSL broadband here in Stannington, and I've been looking round at ISPs and it seems that Plus.net do a 1Mb connection to BB for what seems to be £15 a year!

This seems to me to be a bit too good to be true, so I'm wondering has anyone had any dealings with PlusNET?! And are they any good?! Are they really THAT cheap for a 1Mb BB connection?!

All helpful responses will be appreciated.

If it turns out Plus.net are no good, I'm going with Wanadoo, aka Freeserve, AOL are cheaper but as a former AOL dial up customer I am somewhat reluctant to go back to them if their broadband is anything like their dial up service was, especially given the fact that their techies are idiots who know as much about computers as I do about synchronised knitting :loopy:

If something sounds to good to be true then it generally is! I've been with PlusNet about 18 months now and not had any problems with them at all.

From looking at their site, 1mb broadband with them is £14.99 per MONTH, not year, and for that your bandwidth is capped at 1gb. I personally could use that up in a couple of days, never mind a month. If you want unlimited bandwidth, itll cost you an extra £15 on otp, so £29.99 per month, for 1mb access with no caps.

Yup, been with them since March - never a problem. Also, if there are any problems - the tech. suppt. charges are pretty reasonably priced and good service.

Been with them now 5/6 years on dial-up ISDN and now BB.

Never had any issues at all and very happy with the service. It works, plain and simple.

Tech support are very good if you use the 'Contact Us' ticketing system. Phone support can take ages to get through, but its only national call rates, not the 50p a minute that you can find elsewhere.

(I think you misread the price btw ;))

I've been with them for 2 years as have a few of my colleagues at work. I'm sticking with them when I move to Stannington. £21.99 pcm for 516k unlimited usage.

If you do decide to go with them send me pm so I can refer you and get 50p a month reduction. I'll buy you a pint if you do.

Plus they're a Sheffield based company.

Hmm, that's still about £17 a month cheaper than I'm paying now.

I wish I'd recently signed up with PlusNet.
My brother is with them and he's had no probs.

I used to be with Pipex, but then I moved house and fancied a change (pipex customer service was just shocking) - so I ended up with Bulldog Communications.

I thought they must be good since they've been voted ADSL Provider of the year. Should've checked with some existing customers first.

Customer Support - WORSE than Pipex.
I'm on a 1meg line for £30 a month and I got better speeds on Pipex 512k, seriously!!!

DO NOT USE BULLDOG UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!
You have been warned!

Apparently, Pipex got bought out by somebody, and the new comapny that own them are apalling, and there service has gone down hill.
Bulldog Comm. based in Lon. , a-lot of people think they are getting a 1Mbps serive, but in actual fact they are getting much lower than that - people have complained, and Bulldog are still "iffy"..

I actually rang Pipex customer support yesterday cos I wanted to find out how much notice I needed to give them to leave their service in favour of another provider, and the muppet I spoke to couldn't understand me! I mean come on, granted I don't have the most coherent of accents, but it was a basic simple question you fuffing twit.

Gordon Bennet even bloody silly AOhell were more intelligent than THAT! And that's saying summat.... :loopy:

But alas, the days of actually employing customer service people who actually know what they're on about seem to have gone, nowadays Fred Bloggs off the streets can get a job there, and even get his brother Joe in.... Bloomin' daft it is.

I wouldn't mind but when you're paying £46 a month for their service you'd expect at least competent support staff :loopy:

Turns out the bloke I spoke to was in technical support, not sales... But apparently their sales support are virtually impossible to get hold of.

Just WTF kind of outfit are these people?!

The worst tech. support I've endured is Tiscali, they are a bunch of complete n00bs. I had to explain 5 times, that I (not I personally - I would never go with them) wanted to retreive my old a/c back. As the person I was doing it for had bought a new PC.
It seems every time I rang, I always got through to "Chris" every time.

I've been with Plus for 2 years, always been pleased with the service. Just moved house and in the process of transferring the broadband; they have been helpful so far - I'll let you know how it pans out. At the same time I have switched from 512kb to a 2Mb connection, which is now £2/month less than I am currently paying (was unlimited, I've now opted for a bandwidth cap)

I'd start off with a low amount of bandwidth and see how much you actually use - they have a tool on the website to see how much you are using, and you can upgrade at any time. For general net surfing / e-mail you will hardly use any, its only if you are downloading large amounts of music etc you will use it. I tend to average between 1 and 1.5Gb a month.

I have been with Plusnet for about 4 months now and they are spot on. Never had any problems and I feel like I'm doing something for the city with it being Sheffield based.
I was with Wanadoodoo before and wrote them a letter telling them I had decided to end my association with them as a result of them relocating jobs to Asia. No response expected..no response received!!

You ain't seen nowt till you've listened to BT Internet or AOhell's techies Alex mate.

Apologies in advance to the Mods for the use of F words but their collective incompetence was fecking ASTOUNDING, not to mention, and this is said with no disrespect intended to the Irish, AOL's unfathomably strong Irish accents and complete lack of technical nounce whatsoever.

But I find that with all tech support people, if the problem isn't on a pre-prepared sheet which is in front of them whenever anyone rings, they go into panic mode and start making it up as they go along, so you end up with some shmuck telling you "do this do that do the other" when it's blindingly obvious he has no more idea what he's on about with the technical problem that I would have any idea about.... Synchronised knitting for instance :loopy:

May I be impartial for one moment if you please..

I know techies get it in the neck but have you ever tried to explain something so simple to a user that a 2 year old could understand..

My job involves supporting databases for over 250+ people and from a support side I cannot believe the amount of morons that I get calling me saying 'it shouldnt have done that' (Well its done that for the last 3 years.. but you must be right) and they have been locked out of their account but it wasn't their fault it was the machine that did something wrong..

I know customer service technical lines suck etc but imagine it from their end, they are trying to advise people who sometimes shouldnt be allowed near a computer!

Wibbles - only narrowband to India now. The old staff in Sheffield are now doing Broadband support or moved to other departments. Only people who left were the one's who wanted too on the enhanced payoffs. Just to update you.

Forgive me forum members for i have sinned!.
I have taken out a 12 month contract with AO-HELLLLLL:(
If i had known about Plusnet 2 months ago, i would have been a very happy chappie right now. Instead i am constantly waiting for something else to go wrong so that i can ring AO-HELL and listen to incompitent tech support operatives fumble about taking guesses at fixing one of the many problems i have had.
Or i could always go to LIVE HELP only to be told 'I have an email specifically designed to solve that problem', which it NEVER does.

D'oh.

You plonker!

AOhell's techies are clearly retarded, they know nothing about PCs and internet at all.

Dear AOL user - don't do anything illegal when online. There's a tip for you.... no peer2peer as its frowned upon and they will advise you of it.

Update...

I just have to send a letter requesting cancellation of Pipex account, then wait 30 days for them to get off their fat arses and cancel, then I'll be going with Plusnet's capped 1 Mb service for £15 a month.

Cool.

Twice the speed connection for less than a third of the price.

AND they support Xbox Live online gaming.

Thank you Plusnet, goodbye Pipex, it was good while it lasted, and I have been with them just over 2 and a half years.

Can't see you doing much gaming on their capped 1meg service.
Capped ADSL is really only for general browsing and email n stuff.

Hope it works out, but I reckon you may hit a few snags.

I don't play online games that much anyway but the option to be able to is a must.

That's partly why I wouldn't touch the likes of AOL with a surgically cleaned bargepole.
