I'm a bit ignorant on these matters but what is the big pole thing just outside Longley Park as you come up Barnsley Road heading toward Shefield Lane Top - it's not been there long and is bang opposite the brand new college.
Is this a phone mast like like the one campaigned against at Fulwood and the one currently proposed at Fox Hill?

I was wondering this too
I have noticed when driving around quite a few new masts with green boxes beside them (like the bt/cable boxes)

I'll have a look tomorrow - wouldn't surprise me if it was!

Any possibility its a CCTV stand? College security and all that maybe.

Drove past it today - its grey and if you weren't looking for it you'd probably miss it. Its got a widened tubular section at the top but no fittings for camera etc. The green box next to it has no visible markings to say who it belongs to. All the other new posts (lamp) are painted black so it does stand out from that point of view.

Not sure what it is?

That's a description of a mobile mast.

If you want to frighten yourself, you can find the locations of all masts using this link. (http://www.sitefinder.radio.gov.uk/)

The website of the leading manufacturer of phone masts may help you identify possible masts

http://www.fli.co.uk/subproduct2.asp

Mind you, they come disguised as trees, boat masts, and even full-working lamp posts, so could be very difficult to spot :P

Abroad there are even fibre-glass churches that contain the mast, generator and other equipment :o

I've been passed this today and I think it is one. I can't think what else it could be. Although it doesn't not look as high as the one in the picture.

Just noticed an identical mast at the end of Bradfield Road Hillsborough where it joins Penistone Road by the Pizza Hut and its got CCTV on top.

Not sure what it is? I drive past it daily and must admit I have not noticed it.
I must drive with my eyes closed, very dangerous.
My Son goes to that college and i will ask him if he could shed some light on it.
Mind you I don't notice it because of the damn road works there.

I think you want to be more worried about the high power transmitter you hold right next to your head...

Nope - Just means the area you live in, is a high mobile device user area.
Just to worry you more, 3G network coverage is rolling out more and more, means more masts for your area...

:)

Yes, it is a mast of the type they use for infilling small areas of coverage. It is probably required to cope with all the extra usage in that area once the college opens.

There is nothing to worry about from mobile phone masts.

They do not give out any form of harmful radiation and nor do cell phone handsets. This is simply an urban myth. You're more likely to be given a headache by a street light!:hihi:

Thought the same myself as we went passed today.

There's an identical on over the other side of the hill (up to Lane Top, then dropping down, just after the Deerlands Road junction) outside the old petrol station.

I'm just glad they've stuck double yellows down there. Saw one of the cars last week (before they were painted) and it looked like someone had scraped all down the offside of the thing as they had turned into Barnsley Road.....
