View Full Version : The Last Laugh on Saturday
Funky_Gibbon 10-12-2006, 20:28 Did anyone else go to The Last Laugh at the Roundhouse yesterday? I'm trying to find out the name of the second comedian they had on because he was pretty good. I missed it because one of the women I was with was shouting in my ear at the time. :P
martin1print 10-12-2006, 21:14 I wasn't there, but please post any details of future shows as I enjoy stand up comedy. Is the place full of cigarette smoke?
Try ringing the Roundhouse. Someone there should know.
lastlaugh 11-12-2006, 07:15 Hello
He was the wonderful Mr Ian Moore, glad you liked it.
Sheffielder 11-12-2006, 08:47 All I hear about the Last Laugh is how poor the food is ?

As an asthmatic, I wish I had been told about the smoking before I went in, and been put on the end of the seating :(
Roll on July 1st 2007!
Or you could see exactly the same show for a fiver on a Sunday night at Shef Uni :D (oops i've given the secret away!)
The cheesey mash is yum yum yum - no ifs or buts :D
lastlaugh 11-12-2006, 12:10 Hi
The food's not bad at all now at the club, though it's not haute cuisine. We work with a very limited kitchen facility, so instead of trying to get away with stuff that we can't do we have a nice comfort food type of offering of things like bangers and mash, pie and peas, nachos, chilli, that kind of thing. It's about four pounds a time. As we work some changes into the venue, it may well be that we add a proper catering kitchen, which would change what we offerred.

Well, it's not too much of a secret, we also program comedy nights for both universities in Sheffield, though we do try to make sure that we vary the acts around, so that people who want to go to more than one show a week can. The only act that appeared on Saturday night who went on to Sheffield Uni was Ian Moore, but to be honest he lives in France so we have to give him enough work to fly over.
The smoking question is an interesting one. We don't think it'll affect bigger, weekend clubs like The Roundhouse, but similar legislation has closed smaller weekly clubs that get lots of regulars in Scotland and Ireland. Clubs like The Last Laugh at The Lescar. We did a questionairre at The Lescar a few months back, to find out whether we should go smoke free. 11 % of people said they would prefer it, 49 % said they weren't bothered either way and 40% said it would affect whether they came as much, because either they or the people they came with smoked.
Funky_Gibbon 11-12-2006, 12:18 Thanks for telling me who that comedian was. I'm going to see if I can track down any recording of his stuff because I enjoyed it.
As for smoking, there was some but I really didn't notice it.

Thank you for an honest reply and explaining the issue.
I'll be along as soon as I can for a night out with you guys !
RobWilson 11-12-2006, 14:16 I'll be going back to the Lescar Last Laugh when it's all smoke free.
I've got quite a few friends who stopped going to the Buzz in Manchester due to the smoke too.
lastlaugh 11-12-2006, 15:12 I genuinely hope it's around for you to come to Rob.
Interestingly, the Buzz Club did go smoke free. Then shut.
martin1print 11-12-2006, 19:07 If only 11% of the audience are bothered by the fag smoke I guess it makes sense not to change the ruling. I'm holding on till 1st July, then I'll pay to watch the shows.
lastlaugh 11-12-2006, 19:26 To be fair, we did have to bear in mind that 11% of the customers who were in the gigs said that they didn't like the smoke. We've no idea how many people weren't in the gigs, because of the smoke.
martin1print 13-12-2006, 15:56 Agreed. I think there are many who stay at home because of the smoke. In Ireland and Scotland the smoking ban has apparently been successful without loss of trade.

From what my colleagues tell me any loss has been minimal in Dublin/Ireland :)
Plus for those that do wish to smoke the majority of places provide heated beer gardens..
lastlaugh 14-12-2006, 11:25 Ooh, that's not quite true. Since the smoking ban came into force in Ireland, 600 rural pubs have shut. In the year following the ban, 7500 jobs were lost in the licensed trade.
In Scotland, Bass announced that beer sales were down 7%, whereas food sales were up 15%, which means that there focus is to be moved away from wet houses to places where they can serve meals.
It may well be a good thing, but it is also the death knell for a lot of little boozers.
Thats not what they tell me, I reckon it's Irish Pride talking away here :D They don't want to admit the loss of revenue...
lastlaugh 14-12-2006, 11:34 According to the Vintners Federation of Ireland, pub turnover is down 20-30%, which is massive.

That's dated well over 18 months ago :) The heated beer gardens will have changed the revenue now..
lastlaugh 14-12-2006, 11:59 Yes, it is dated, but those pubs have already shut, they won't reopen. Outdoor heaters don't make any difference at all when it's chucking it down. It's fairly inescapable that whilst banning smoking is good for the public health, it will shut pubs down.
Ally_Fraser 14-12-2006, 12:02 Have they had Manning on yet?
Can't call it a stand up night without the king of the stand ups.
lastlaugh 14-12-2006, 12:08 Unfortunately, no we haven't.
Ally_Fraser 14-12-2006, 12:15 Oh well - keep it in mind.
I know what you're thinking - but go back to his performance at Jongleurs they had on sky a few years back, they all turned up hoping to shout abuse at some fat racist bloke - but he did a clean act, and had em all on their feet begging for more.
Never go on reputation alone........
Sheffielder 14-12-2006, 13:33 That's like Hitler going on a non violent tour of Poland.
Ally_Fraser 14-12-2006, 13:38 That's like Hitler going on a non violent tour of Poland.
Aye just like it!!!!! :loopy:
I'll tell you who else to book - Steve Womack. True Genius.
