View Full Version : Continental Market on Fargate
I enjoyed the fragrance of garlic and the atmosphere which the continental market brought to Fargate. Judging by the response of Sheffield folk and visitors, it was a major success. In fact, it could become a permanent feature for my money! The large dishes of meat, prawns, potatoes, the baguettes, cheeses, sausages, cherries looked and smelled fantastic. The flowers and plants from Holland ... If you missed it, pop down quick, it finishes today!
There's some discussion of this in the General Chat forum too.
I hope they do make it regular feature - I agree it was fantastic.
What's that, cherries? :-)
When I go abroad, one of my fave pastimes is to find the local market and buy some great fresh produce.
*Twinkle* 07-07-2003, 18:50 I saw the continental market. I thought it was a bit of a hazard though. The food wasn't protected, people could just walk up, cough and splutter all over it if they pleased. Also, the smell of lush was wafting all over the food and so people'd be tasting a tinge of handmade soap with their food!
GHaywood 08-07-2003, 21:26 I don't know about it becoming a permanent market, at least not as big as it was. Fargate is crowded enough at times without making everyone channel through the sides.
Caprice: About food hygiene. Don't worry yourself too much. You'll be fine. It all comes from the ground anyway, or an animal. Cheese is like mould. There are germs everywhere. Just because it's not in plastic doesn't mean its less safe. People cough in factories too you know, and sweat, I certainly did at Fletcher's Bakery when I was there. Look at all the old folk at Castle Market - if there were problems with the food on display there then they would all be ill wouldn't they?
the ,market stank and made me feel ill........ never mind!!
the roses were pretty thi that they were seling on one of the stalls.
Latest news ... the Market will return November 6-9th.
alchresearch 11-07-2003, 16:13 There is a German one that comes to Manchester quite often.
The sights, sounds and smells, especially on a cold day so close to Christmas (when I went to it) is wonderful!

Can't help worrying really, its just that I studied for my basic food hygiene certificate and we had all the dangers/hazards etc drummed into us. It's hard for me to walk past a potential food hazard without passing comment, somethings just need to be said!
Agent Orange 22-03-2004, 11:57 Just this minute returned from Fargate where I discovered they have a european style market set up. Just couldn't resist the Paella!! Does anyone know if this will be a regular event?
neeeeeeeeeek 22-03-2004, 12:33 every three months....
fnkysknky 22-03-2004, 12:51 I was on Fargate around dinner time today and I didn't see a market - my eyes must be sodding painted on :D
Agent Orange 22-03-2004, 15:07 personally, i think that the market is a great idea and i look forward to its return. although, i do think it would be better if it was set up anywhere else but fargate.
Dont-Ask 22-03-2004, 15:09 Was there on sunday, loved it gorged myself silly!
I passed it with my daughter who wanted to try almost everything she saw. I was put off by a couple of lads who were roasting nuts in a cauldron and smoking. Was this the same market that used to be held on the Cathedral side of that area ? Someone told me about a market there but I sometimes avoid Saturday shopping in town.
There didn't seem to be as many stalls this time as before. Did anyone else think that?
It was a shame about the wind at the weekend - it blew the flower stall away!
It does get a bit crowded on Fargate when the market's happening, but where else could it be held?
Tracey.C. 24-03-2004, 15:32 The market got my thumbs up, i enjoyed walking around there and the smell of all the different foods was lovely.
TrashyBook 28-06-2004, 15:16 I've heard that the continental market is back on Fargate from Thursday - Sunday this week (Thurs 1 July - Sun 4 July).
Can anyone confirm this?
I've spent a few years in France and obviously been in quite a few supermarkets there. Well the French stand that was there the past couple of times on Fargate was selling " Cassoulet" a very french dish in a tin which was number 1 brand. This is the cheapest brand in all supermarkets in France (I guess its equivalent to the economy range in supermarkets here). That very tin is worth about £0.40 in France and tastes foul and they had the cheek to sell it over here for £3.50 a tin!!!
Not only that but it gives a bad image of the supposed lovely french cuisine over here as those people imported the worst possible stuff...
I think there is an art market in the Peace Gardens but i am not sure about Continental Market.
If anyone find out please post as there was some interesting foody things last time, and it smelt wonderful as you walked round.
The Telegraph reported that it is coming back this weekend. It said there are going to be fewer english and more european stalls this time too.
Greybeard 28-06-2004, 22:31 Last Saturday I saw signs advertsing the continental market next weekend....and on Saturday 4th. July it's also the Mayor's Parade, which is a virtual guarantee of rain and total traffic chaos.
Pity it's not publicized - I'c have popped into town during lunch to take a look.

Hope this helps!!
that french stand is there!! selling those tins for £4.00 this year!!!!
Thanks for the warning sony...is it open tomorrow ?
it will be yes. 1st to the 4th included. So be aware of those tins!!! lol
Greybeard 03-07-2004, 13:56 Had a wander down Fargate this morning and to be honest I thought most of the stalls were overpricing their produce. A Dutch cake stall was asking £2.00 for stuff you can buy in the market for £1.49 !!
Quite a few stall-holders smoking or eating behind the counter, ...not very hygenic in my view.
LittleWitch 03-07-2004, 21:49 Me and the other half had a wander down there today. It was overall really nice to smell all the different foods etc. However, I wouldn't recommend anyone getting "authentic" german hotdogs from the first hotdog stall you come to at the top of the market - £2 each for hotdogs - AND the bread roll was stale - AND the sausage only filled half the hotdog - AND they only gave us three slivers of onion each - AND the tomato ketchup had all but run out - and that was only at about 1pm!!!!
We don't have much money as it is, and to get ripped off like that really made me angry.
The crepe van was right outside our front door, which was handy :D Also, there's a stall near WH Smith selling Chocolate Waffles :D
I suppose it is a little bit expensive - certainly I couldn't afford to buy lunch there every day, but it does make a nice change from a Marks and Spencer sandwich.
As usual it's overpriced.
The only thing I saw that was going cheap was some smoked meats. The stall was between Next and WHSmiths, it had knocked down most of the meats from £3-4 to £1-2. I think that was it though and they probably wont be here today doing the same.

Shame that duffman, as we are just off down there to try it and I love a bit of smoked fish....oh well they are probably at the Hartington Farmers market today...that's another con, along with a lot of the FMs.
I just got back from a very fruitless and time wasting visit to this market.....well to be more correct a fruitless and time wasting visit around the one way system that is now supposedly the city centre. Which brainelss pratt thought up blocking off roads that were the main routes into town. We approached down Bramall Lane to go up Eyre St ....bad mistake, no entry, never mind turn left and go up to the bottom of Eccy rd turn right up Charter Row to the top of the Moor, so far so good I thought park around the back of the peace gardens, Second bad mistake......anyhow to cut a long story short we drove around for 30 minutes before I got fed up and came back home...... last time I will be visiting the city centre for a sodding long time....well done local council planners you have finally after 37 years of driving in Sheffield driven this shopper and his family firmly down to Meadowhell.
Just got back from the market and the only place that was selling anything cheap was a sausage stall selling smoked, garlic and pepperd pork sausages for £1 each.
Looks like you had a hard time owdlad, they were resurficing Eyre street so all the buses took a detour which added an extra 15 mins on the journey:(
dwhembro 04-07-2004, 17:12 I went to the market this morning and retuned home outraged at the prices. It really did lake my angry. Not only was everything massively over priced got there at 10 30ish and they were all still setting up. Not a good impression.
Pretty much the prices at each stall put me off from buying anything. Cheese! How much! No chance! Its also the only place that makes the pick and mix at the cinema cheap.
I would have happily spent £20+ if the prices had been more suitable. £4 for 2 melons! You know what they can do with them. Yeah I agree with duffman the sausage store was well priced, got 2 big chorizo sausages for a quid each. gonna make some spicy sausage stew. mmm.
Who runs the market? Anyone fancy joining me in a price protest campaign? Lets bombard the organisers with e-mails/letters. I think the ideas great and want them to know it gets my support but not when its a blatant rip off.
Whadya recon? Any one up for it?
It is organised by the Markets section of the council strangely enough:P
Call the general council number if you want to register a complaint, that's if you can find your way about the answering machine maze that is the general switchboard. You could check out the councils website aswell to leave a comment.
