View Full Version : Curious about a cat rescue. Firth Park?
Yellowrose 09-12-2006, 22:01 We have two male cats 13 years old which we adopted when they were about 7-9 months old. We were given the contact name and telephone number of a man in Firth Park by a member of staff at our (then) vets in Chesterfield. They had neutered the animals. I was told that the cats were rescue cats being kept at someones home. I picked them up from a terraced house near Northern General/Firth Park. His name was Norman I think. I gave him a donation for the cat rescue but cant remember which one it was. He didnt ask me for a fee and was quite taken aback when I made the donation.
What the guy had told me was one was definitely half siamese and had been rescued with his mum and litter mates. (he shows typical siamese traits and bone structure but is all white with one blue eye and one green). The other black cat was also half oriental of some type and he and his litter mates were taken into a vet at 2 days old to be destroyed as they were non-descript kittens. The black kitten was put with the white cat and his mummy to be fed at the rescue when only a few days old, so they had been together from the start really (or this is what I was told).
Anyway, I wondered if this cat rescue was known to anyone on the forum, or would it just be someone who fostered cats from a rescue? Does it ring any bells? Its not that theres any problem, (obviously as Ive had them nearly 13 years!!!) Im just curious!
This sounds very much like you were dealing with one of the many fosterers that are the unsung heroes and heroines of the Cats Protection. As well as having a number of shelters in different parts of the country the CP operate out of volunteers homes, where cats are looked after until they can be found homes.
I know of a number of volunteers who foster cats and give them lots of love for the CP in Sheffield- I'm considering doing the same myself too.
Moonbird 10-12-2006, 01:13 I also got my cat (now 11) from Norman, i'm pretty sure he ran a little rescue in his own right, he moved away from his little house and now runs a pub in ecclesfield with his partner (or did) i'm not sure if he still runs the rescue anymore.
tarateets 10-12-2006, 03:29 I got my two cats from a fosterer for CPL Firth Park area, lady called Doreen, very nice and helpful, still going strong I believe..

ditto - ours are doreen-derived rescues, too. she seemed a bit surprised by the donation that we left in exchange for the moggies. she was also very keen to hear about how they were doing when they hit 6 months, partly so she knew they'd been neutered. actually, although the cats hated going back to a house full of cats, they did go back to stay once or twice when we went away and before the cats were trustworthy enough to be left without a resident cat-sitter. she got food donations for those days, too.

I got the impression he kept several cats in the cellar from what I could gather. I suppose this is the best sort of place to get your moggies from cos they are used to being in a family home.
alirosdan 10-12-2006, 20:47 I think there is a little terraced house on Bellhouse Road, up near where the Horseshoe pub used to be that keeps rescued cats.

Not sure about the cellar not sure i would have been happy with that had i known  my cat seemed quite used to the house, Norman used to always have puppies and kittens in, next time i'm at ecclesfield i may pop in the pub and see if he's still there i'm curious now :hihi:

One of the cats was walking around the house like he owned it, when I called, the other one he fetched from down the cellar, so maybe they did both! If you see him tell him Marlon (the white cat) and Otis (the black cat; both now renamed!) are alive and well and happy, though a little elderly now.
It wasnt on Bellhouse road though, it was off a side street just slightly up the hill from the Firvale entrance to Northern general.
My mum got her dog from Norman, around 12 years ago, from Firth Park. If my memory serves me right he was the same guy who had the Meadow pub, on Meadow Street, (off St Phillips road). I'm not sure, but I think he has the Forrest now on Rutland Road, although could be mistaken!

You may be referring to the Cat Abuse Treatment Society (Jackies) which has a big cattery built in the back garden (just off sicey avenue)

Yes, thats where I went. So he has moved on then? Does he still rescue cats?

Mee too, both of mine were from doreen. She is a lovely woman and cant do enough for you. My eldest is 4 and youngest is 2 and I still call her now and again if Im worried about one of them.
I know of Norman (Wheldrake Road) I worked with the guy who owned Normans house and from what I knew of Norman (15 years ago) he seemed a genuine animal lover who does his best.
