I wasn't rich enough either, my mate found a bargain flight 7 weeks before we went. £185 return.. :)

Me and 2 mates in a Land Rover Discovery. Got on the ferry to Calais and then stuck a pin in the map.

Covered 3400 miles in 2 weeks, visiting destinations in France, Andorra, Spain, Monaco, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belguim.

Fantastic weather, several nights under the stars, lots of lager and laughs. 1 break down, 2 run ins with the law, several run ins with the locals, a throwing up contest, not eating for 2 days, and a car fire at Leicester on the way home

Remember it all like yesterday.

Happy Days!

Jim:thumbsup:

I had some great holidays as a child and we went on a cruise holiday three times.

In 1975 we went on the SS Canberra and again in 1981. In between, in 1977 we went on the (original) SS Oriana. All were superb holidays but the Canberra was by far the nicer ship and 1981 was the best holiday simply because I was older (12).

But my best holiday was in 1980 when we went to Miami, Florida. It was just a different world. Everything was so big and everyone you met seemed to be so polite! There was TV at breakfast time and loads of channels to choose from.

We went to Kennedy Space Center and to Walt Disney World. This was stuff kids' dreams are made of. In a word: wonderful.

Even flying to and from America was a delight. Huge aircraft (Boeing 747 to New York, an Airbus down to Miami).

I was lucky and I plan to take my family there sometime in the next 2 or 3 years.

Florida, Sept 10th - 26th 2006.

Me an my partner went to Orlando and was on the same flight as my mother, sister and 2 nephews however was a short drive away from each others accomodation. Ended up taking both my nephews to most of the parks and lived alot of the fun through their eyes...and also had the pleasure of eating at the 2nd best steakhouse in North America and since then have never been able to eat steak since because it was such a cut above anything I have ever eaten.

Oh and I met my hero, Dr. Emmett Brown :D

Same here. I had gone to see my sister in Connecticut and my son said"You must go round the World Trade Centre.Id never heard of it. It lived up to my expectations, and we had a snack in the restuarant on the top floor. All these restaurant workers were killed when the twin towers came down. New York was terrific, just wished Id had time to go round Central Park, but had to give it a miss.

I've also been up the World Trade Centre and that is why still to this day I'm fascinated by the events of what went on that day in 2001. The idea of something that big collapsing is just mind boggling. I remember stood outside the main lobby area in the south tower and just looking up and thinking 'my god!' - New York will never be the same in my eyes, they made that skyline.

Best holiday? Probably Hong Kong and Thailand.

Center Parcs in April 1997 for my 21st, one of the few holidays in recent years that has included the whole of my immediate family, Mum, Dad. me and my Brother who currently resides in London with his wife (who's originally from Gloucester, they met at Sunderland Uni) so we don't see him much.

I have to say that most of the best holidays I have had have not been beach holidays in hot places, those bore me to tears.
When I was younger nearly every summer I went on a cruiser on norfolk broads with a bunch of friends, and those holidays were superb.

And recent years the best holidays I have had have been city breaks. Especially Madrid, Krakow, Budapest and driving around Bavaria.

.
Of the two ships the best one to work on by far was Oriana, the atmosphere was much better. Canberra was not a friendly ship, as far as the ships company was concerned.
The reasoin that it may have been better from a passengers point of view is that she had Asian crew, who are more polite and hardworking than English crewmen, even when working for a quarter of the wage.

There are other that feel like I do then:) We have been to Spain the last couple of years, and people think I am nutty for wanting to be on the go all the time, and exploring. Apparantly (according to OH ) I must have an attention span problem, as i can't last on a beach for more than 30mins.

Back to the thread, I said Florida was my favourite (and it was) but also high on my list was a week in Erm Northumberland. It was bloomin lovely. Loads to see and do, and some gorgeous villages etc. We stayed near Berwick, which was a good base, even ventured in to Scotland.

Bit of a generalisation there. I'd be more than happy if crew were as polite and hard working as me and I'm English. Why are Asian crew supposedly more hard working? I bet it's just that you don't understand when an asian person is either being rude or quite simply having a bad day.

I know because they were my crewmen.
Motivating European crew is not easy, they are on board for the ride, like everyone else.
With the Pakistanis it was much easier. They took orders from their Serang.
If you had him as a friend, he did the motivation for you. Usually by the toe of his boot.
In those days his word was law among the crew, as engineer officer, if I told him something needed to be done, he made sure his men did it, no mistake.
Very rare was punishment required.
With white crew ships, loggings and discipline were needed nearly every other day.
