View Full Version : Is everyone in london utterly insane?
Musicman1998 06-12-2006, 17:38 yes.
london is not normal. so many ****as everywhere of all ages, sizes and sexes. its unreal. :loopy: :loopy: :loopy:
its impossible to set foot in london without increasing blood pressure.
Yes, mainly. It's an interesting question whether it is in any sense natural for so many people to live in such close proximity to each other. But they do it, so it presumably can't be that unnatural. It does turn folk into weirdos though. I went on holiday for 6 months in 1999, and when I came back to London I thought "Jesus, this place is crazy! How could I have ever lived here?"
And within 3 weeks I was back in Londoner mode and it felt quite normal (i.e. mainly angry):)
Jabberwocky 06-12-2006, 17:49 What can I say? Theyre southerners! :D
Musicman1998 06-12-2006, 17:57 its awful. what kind of life is it living there man, you really have to ask yourself.
living on a knife edge.
Zinger549 06-12-2006, 19:19 And living up north with all those moaning northerners is much better,
I don't think so.
cressida 06-12-2006, 19:22 I am in London every July as I have a timeshare, it is wonderful, however the taxi driver who took us there said only 25 per cent of Londoners are English
Grandad.Malky 06-12-2006, 19:49 I enjoy visiting London a couple of times a year, that’s the problem most people just “visit” London.
People that work there live in the commuter belt; it’s not a real city anymore, more like a business centre and a tourist attraction.
London is one of the greatest cities on the planet. It's characters are what makes it what it is. There are some crap areas yes, but where isn't there?
I love Camden the most, the place is awesome.

I have been to Upton Park a few times and as you come out of the ground and down the street towards the market it conjures up images of “East Enders” there is even a jellied eel shop. :gag:
dylan_61 06-12-2006, 21:43 I live in Muswell Hill, North London now and London offers the best and worse of what the country has to offer. The employment opportunities are unbelievable. I was pi**ing away my career in Sheffield for years, I moved to London and I earn enough to buy a house in London, which is no mean feet and I'm getting calls from head hunters, which all seems a million miles from Sheffield.
On the other hand London isn't really an English city. It's the multicultural, multi ethnic society that Sheffield thinks it is but isn't. The diversity of the people is absolutely staggering.
On the minus side is the unbelievable selfishness. When I drive around London, which I avoid as much as I can I have to concentrate so hard on other drivers, trying to second guess whether they're going to undertake me, cut me up etc. I drove up to Sheffield a few months ago, up the A61, Ecclesall Rd North to Hunters Bar round about. When I lived in Sheffield I though driving there was stressful, when I came back after a year I though how relaxed and dare I say quaint I thought it was.
On balance I much prefer London, well Muswell Hill and working in the City, but Sheffield (moved there as a Student) is a fantastic place, well the South West of the city where I lived for 9 years.
nightwish 06-12-2006, 22:18 I used to live Nr London would never consider going back down there to live
for a few reasons
1. Houses to expensive
2. You have to travel miles accross London for entertainment at night and no £7.00 taxi fare to get home more like £27.00.
3. People have no time for any one or anything other than themselves.
4. Travelling on tube is like a cattle train and u darent look at any one or talk to them as they will think u are :loopy:
Musicman1998 07-12-2006, 00:14 And living up north with all those morning northerners is much better,

morning northeners?
Lived in London for a year and hated it, missed Sheffield terribly. My parents visit us from Cambridge even and they are hard to shift, they love the north. We even have a theory as to why there are sod all decent road signs in Sheffield - it keeps intruders away!

Interesting. Why are you on the Sheffield Forum then?
Londoners deserve some credit for entering the dark, hot, sweaty pit that is the London Underground every day. Being launched through a glorified sewer at a hundred miles an hour and paying for the privilege shows some true dedication to subsidising the rest of us!
BasilRathbon 07-12-2006, 09:59 It both amuses and amazes me that most firms still pay a "London Allowance" to their employees who work in that great southern cesspit. Has anyone stopped to think that the massive wages paid down there for doing the most mundane of jobs contribute to the high cost of living and property prices?
CockneyMafia 07-12-2006, 10:20 My my. We are feeling parochial today aren't we.
I would wager the vast majority of people slagging London off have never even been there, and probably equate it to somewhere akin to middle earth, full of Pixies and Dragons.
Perhaps Sheffield should be renamed Royston Vasey?

You jest sir. The minimum wage is the same one you get in Sheffield, and lots of people down there are on it. In fact, the competition for the most mundane, minimum wage, jobs is enormous in London. If you're on low wages, you're financially better off up here. No question about it.

Typical arrogant londoner. Ever heard of something called "quality of life"?

Yes...there is nothing for you here....

Have you just graduated from Hallam with a degree in prosaic regional stereotyping?
For your information, I spent 12 years living in Sheffield, and moved to London last year.
Both places are equally charming in their own way.
What were your experiences of London when you lived here? (apologies if I have missed them elsewhere on the thread)

Have you used the London Underground? I'm asking because I think you may have confused it with a coal mine. I don't think I've been to a tube station that hasn't been well-lit and whilst the temperature can vary that's not surprising given that some parts of the system are overground, some parts are underground and some air is moved around the system by the movements of the trains (on my last visit whilst walking through a passage linking the platforms and the escalators a cold wind created by a moving train blew through it).
The London tube system isn't perfect but it's far superior to any tram system. It's very extensive but it's not that expensive (an Off-Peak Zone 1 and 2 Travelcard that can also be used on buses and overground trains is £4.90 but use it a couple of times in a day and you'll be saving money). Furthermore, if it didn't exist the streets of London would be far far busier than they already are.
byevilroot 07-12-2006, 23:07 i cant believe me peepers guv, the person on about the undeground has a point, in fact pulic transport as a whole, it takes ages to get to work and you sweat like a PIG on the tube when it's hot like.
saying that, i loved my time in london and my girlf still lives there, it's great, no place on earth like it. london is it's own nationality.
byevilroot 07-12-2006, 23:08 but yeah, transport in shef is a rip off,
byevilroot 07-12-2006, 23:08 even if the bus drivers are more polite
My bro lives in london, and I love going down for a couple of days, but that's it. It's too unfriendly and stressful (as a whole). When you get introduced to people down there, they're no different to us northerners, but very little general friendliness between strangers, that you get up here.
How can anyone slag off the tube system?, (ok, packed a lot of the time, and a bit hot in summer) but, the system as a whole is the work of human genius at its best. A large part of the older system was completed in 2 years!.
I've been to NYC, and I thought they would have a great underground, but compared to london, I would rate the Sheffield Super tram better than NYC's.
