I found this quote about Sheffield on an obscure website:
A constantly widening flood has submerged the choicest bits of suburban scenery under a desolating wave of greed for ground rents.
One could be forgiven for thinking that this was a contemporary view but would you be surprised to hear that this was written in 1906?
It makes for an interesting read, imo, so I thought I'd share my discovery:
