View Full Version : Obtain Uk Driving Licences
Need your guys advice on how to obtain Uk driving licence. I already have full driving licence from my country (Malaysia) and it seem its only valid in UK for 1 year only.
From the dvla websites it say I need to apply for provisional licence and have to sit for theory and practical test so usually how long it tooks to get full driving licence?
Do I need to get driving instructor? Guys/gals please help me.
alchresearch 06-12-2006, 15:05 How long have you been driving?
Is the Malaysian road system similar to ours?
Do you know your highway code?
If your answers are ages, yes and yes then just go for the test.
Ashcroft 06-12-2006, 15:09 time it takes to pass your test depends on you, and if your capable of passing.

I've been driving for ten years and the road system and the highway code i guess the same as I've already driving in UK for 1 year.
So does it mean after the theory and practical test i will get the full licence?
neeeeeeeeeek 06-12-2006, 15:18 if you pass both you get a full liscecne

Well....could you tell me a bit of your experience:hihi: ? Getting worried now:rolleyes:
Grandad.Malky 06-12-2006, 16:25 Buy a CD for your computer that will run you through the theory test and as questions and answers to practice on, have a driving lesson/ assessment to brush up on any bad habits.
If I remember rightly from my son you can book your tests on line and even pick your times.
There's a bloke on here who runs Horizon School of Motoring in Sheffield, can't remember his username, look him up, ring him up and mention the forum and he'll probably give you a decent discount on driving lessons.
Mr Bridger 06-12-2006, 23:06 Before you can sit either the Theory or Practical Test you must be in possession of a UK provisional licence, so I would apply for this as soon as possible.
If you have been in the UK for over 12 months your Malaysian driving licence will no longer be sufficient for you to legally drive unaccompanied on the public highway. When you receive your provisional licence it will allow you to drive but you must be accompanied by a qualified driver at all times until you pass the practical part of the test.
Once you have your provisional licence, you may take the theory test. Current waiting times for this are about two weeks. Once you have passed this part you may then apply to take the practical test. The waiting time for this is approximately 6 weeks.
Given that you have been driving for several years, it would be advisable to have a qualified driving instructor assess your driving ability. This will highlight any areas that may need attention to bring them up to UK test standard. The instructor will also be able to run through the test procedure so that you are best prepared.
Please feel free to check out my website (details below) & either PM me via this forum or via the contacts page.

LIZ!!! Stop being naughty on a serious thread :naughty:
I can recommend Saxon and Horizon School of Motoring... Got me through my test and was really (and I mean really patient :hihi: )
Do they drive on the left in Malaysia?
I'm sure that's one of the few worlds countries that does. Could be wrong though.

No No No No No No No!!!!!!!
Only take this troute if you're prepared to waste £21.50 for the Theory and £48.50 for the Practical test. There are huge differences in the standards required in different countries (not saying you're not capable though nasa).
You really need assessing by a qualified driving instructor first, if for no other reason than to give you advice on taking the test, and sorting out any bad habits you might have.
PM me or give me a ring.
By the way, thanks for the recommendations, peeps!!

You'll need a UK Provisional driving licence which costs £38.
I'm mind boggled by how fast the responses are in this thread ! lol....
Actually, I wouldn't mind knowing what the current lesson rates are. :hihi:
Btw, do old provisional licences work any more ? (I still have one of those old 99 yr ones.) Or do I have to apply for a completely new one ?
Maybe it's time I picked up my lessons again. :hihi:
You can still use your old provisional but will need to exchange it for the new style when you pass your test.
Take a look at the website for details of rpices etc.
