so, for the past 2 months i've been looking for a decent 3 bedroomed property in Ecclesall Rd/Broomhill/Crookes/City Centre/Netheredge.

i've looked on here, my details are with a fair few estate agents and I get the property guide every Friday and have got nothing.

Students can live pretty much anywhere they want to in Sheffield, but if you're 3 professionals like ourselves, it seems that you get the bits left over. All over Ecclesall Road there are properties to let ONLY to students. YOu can happily live on West St/Division St if you're a student or housing association. And unfortunately we can't afford the £1000 plus a month for a West One penthouse.

y'know...we're not raking in loads of money but we can afford a nice place and pay council tax...so why not let properties to us?

Why do students or the incredibly affluent get the best rental deal in Sheffield?

Simple economics really. A 5 bed student house in those areas brings in around £1000 a month, not the £650 that you might want to pay. As a landlord which would you do?

However!

There is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Sheffield University is selling around 100 of its houses that are currently student accommodation. The buyers of those houses will not be allowed to use them as HIMO student accommodation, so with a bit of luck, some of them may end up on the rental market.

There are quite a few nice family homes for rent around Fulwood and Ranmoor though. Try up there.

i'm surprised that a landlord would specify student only. I'm sure if you offered the same amount that filling all the rooms with students would net them that they'd be willing to listen to offers.

As to why the most affluent get the nicest houses, duh...

Why don't you tell the landlords etc you're mature students? Only trouble is, many student houses use the front room as a bedroom, making many three-bed houses actually two bed. And the furniture is generally a bit rubbish, as from what I recall of my studenthood young academic types don't tend to look after things too well.

I'm a private landlord and I am happy to rent to professionals. I have a great house near West ST. at present that has come up for rent unexpectedly. Unfortunately it is only 2 bed...

hahah...god i am stupid.. yeah, i know obviously the affluent get the best deals. must have had my stupid head on when I wrote that.

yeah, its a shame. I just feel we're sort of in a strange void. I'll certainly give student accomadation a try, but I take on board the point about them possibly being a bit naff...i think a lot of the landlords have issues with council tax etc but obviously we'd be fine with paying that. Seems a little silly to let a property stay empty when we could be in there making it our home for the next few years...

have you thought fully about renting in a student area? There'll be a lot of students around you know.
