I wasn't sure if this was the right category for this to go under, but, well, we shall see.

I am wondering if there is any Amateur Poker Clubs being held within Sheffield, I am new to the game and want to be able to meet others who are also new and to try and learn with the help of others, if anyone has any suggestions, then they would be appreciated, thanks.

Lets se how many people are intreseted and then arrange a venue.

Are we talking big money or justa few quid?
Im not rich so i can't play for big money. Most I could do is a ton (£100).

I will play for less though if people just want a laugh (£20 or so).

Thanks for the info everyone, as some_mentioned, texas holdem is the game I play, and thanks nomme for the heads up on napoleons, I shall definately give them a call.

If a game ever was set up, it would be based at my location for one reason alone, I have the gear (chips, cards) and to start with it would be played for fun, eventually once everyone was good at the game and knew what they was doing, would move onto money, either that or I would like to get together with some other people and go to napoleons, but I have to join up first, heh, which should be getting done within the next couple of weeks, I also play online through yahoo and other poker games (pacific poker, poker stars etc.) so keep in touch if your interested in discussing poker, the rules, or anything in general to do with it.

I have just phoned napoleons and unfortunately, to attend the poker training you do have to be a member, which as I stated means having to wait to get the ID needed to join then getting a form, then taking the form back and waiting 24 hours for the membership to go through the processes, so it is gonna be a while before I get to attend, oh well, patience IS a virtue as they say, lol.

I know it is risky to invite strangers to your house to play a game of poker, but if you don't trust people, you get nowhere in life, so, if people really are interested in getting together for a drink and a game (for fun, not financially setup for a cash game) then PM me and let me know.

All you need to join Napoleons is proof of Id which is a utility bill or your passport. something with your name and address on. You can just nip down after 7.00pm get a form either fill it in there or take away with you, once its passed back 24 hours later you are a member, they take your id, you play poker not a long time at all to be patient.

Kry10

I have just enquired and I have been informed that you are incorrect, a utility bill is not enough, they require a utility bill PLUS a bank card with a matching signature, a passport, driving licence, some form of goverment ID either from the police or another official place, so as you can see, they are VERY strict on what proof of ID they need, good thing I didn't get the birth/marriage certificate then, lol, they wouldn't accept that, sheesh.

Hi ppl,

I've been playing holdem for a while now on pokerstars (best online poker room ive come accross. My username is marky2coats, so look me up). Went to Napoleans in Hillsborough for their Thursday night tourney. £10 buy with re buys for 2hours. It was my first time playing in a Casino and it was a bit daunting but that all disapeared 10 mins into the game. I had a excellent time playing with over 60 players for a real big pot. I would recommend it to everyone. Oh and you get a free buffet meal and free sofdrinks with waitress service. Sweet!.

If you can find someone who is already a member they can sign you in. That autmatically makes you a member and u can come back and use the Casino after 24hours.

PS. If people are up for doing a poker school then Id be up for it. Also u dont have to invite ppl to your house, find a nice little pub and play tourney poker with chips?

Mark.

Hi there, I tried to find you on pokerstars, but didn't find ya, let me know when your likely to be on and I shall try again.

At Napoleans what form of ID did you take with you and when you played the game, was it Texas Holdem and the buy in, was it £10 for your first set of chips to play with or did you have to pay£ for the privelage of playing then buy some chips ???

Sorry for having a load of questions, but dunno anyone else who has been, I am surprised that you did not try the training sessions they have, apparently they are free.

Thankyou for the suggestion about a poker venue, I shall speak to the landlord of the local pub and see if they are willing to host a poker club, more on that later.

Hey there,

Im on poker stars every now and then. Send over your id and ill look out for you.

All I took to Napoleans was my passport. Make sure you look smart and definatley no trainers or shoes that look like trainers!. They realy pick up on that (i think i was lucky!).

It was £10 for your first 1000 chips. That also gets you registered to play. For the first 2hours the ante is 25 chips. If you run out of chips or go 500 (i thikn its 500) or below then you can buy another 1000 chips for £10.

Hope this helps.

Mark.

My ID on pokerstars is the same as it is everywhere else, lol, Kry10.

I have enquired at Napoleans tonight and they have verified that I need to take my bank card and a utility bill, I have no passport/driving licence, I also made enquiries about stakes and so forth, as you say, it is £10 for a buy in then the blinds are £25 small blind £50 big blind, but they didn't say how many chips you get, so thanks for that bit of info, so you have helped a lot.

Hope to see you on pokerstars, if your ever up for a meet and greet then on to the casino, let me know, we have transport available.

I have been to the Casino a few times (Grovesner and Napoleons) and I didn't see any tables with them actually playing texas hold'em. The only poker I got to play is yu against the deeler and that is just 5 card draw, no change. I hav eheard you can rent a room out to play though.

It seems Poker has become realy poular and the Casinos have noticed the fact.

Thursday nights Napoleans £10 buy ins starts around 9:30pm

Wednesday nights (as i was told by a punter at the door) £20 buyins.. apparently ppl come from allround for this one as you can imagine the Pot is a fairly hefty one.

Kry10, defo meet up sometime before heading to a tourney. I will post next time Im going to Napoleans (at this rate it will be this Thursday!). Also it would be realy cool if we could get a Sheffield poker club going. With Holedems popularity realy taking off it could turn into quite a nice little earner if regular, amatuer, poker tournies were held

Napoleans is next to the Owlerton race track in Hillsborough.

I have organised small stake games ...

I will consider new players, and lock my tournament to @24 people...

Satellite games played to final table ... wonga for final table....

Do realise this is a charitable game and as such does not involve money on the table or a gaming licence...mmmm

Hi All,

I think all the ideas that have been put around sound great.

I would be interested in meeting for a few hands.

If people are up for it then we could always ask a pub landlord if he would be cool with it, as long as no money changes hands without a gaming licence then don't really need to ask permission but always nice to incase landlord thinks local mafia turning up LOL !!!!.. Also a promise of a nice bar bill will entice any decent landlord.

If people want to play with money then we could put together a table tourney, say 8 or 10 peeps, set amount and then pay out to top 3 etc.

That way everyone knows how much they stand to spend even if the cards don't fall their way.

Anyone up for it then?? Does anyone have a large amount of chips or is it matchsticks????

Cheers

this is standard vegas poker against the bank, not playing against other people.

It is only in table tourneys that you will find hold em being dealt.

From what people have said Naps has a decent one every Wednesday and Thursday.

Give that a try Mark..

Hi,

I haven't sent enough messages to PM yet but would def be interested in any poker night. Would like to play for fun first due to me being new to the game, If anyone knows where I can get a simple explanation of the betting for Texas Hold em I'd be keen to have a look.

Cheers

Just thought I'd give this one a bit of a *Bump* what with poker on at the moment on channel 5 (and v good it is to). Are people still interested in getting something together? There seems to be so many forum meets popping up, I'm sure a poker forum meet would be a good addition.

poker sounds like fun. I've always fancied being part of a regular friendly school, meeting in the homes of others.

I think playing dealer's choice, once people are familiar with the basic game, is best. It prevent monotony and there's nothing like a round or two of lame brains to loosen up the game, or mexican stud for hilarious counter bluff opportunities.

Most number of people you can realistically have in a school is 10, on the basis that you always have 5 or 6 people turning up, and if everyone turns up you can still deal a full hand of 5 card stud - and there is where that game becomes more interesting.

I'd be on for a £20 sitdown winner takes all type of event. That way you are at least sure of one of two outcomes and no-one is losing more than they can afford.

I'd be up for £20-in poker nights, but I'm afraid Texas Hold 'Em is the only version of the game I feel comfortable enough laying my cash down on!

Has anyone been down/is anyone interested in going down to Napoleon's for their Thursday night tournaments?

Well, it looks like there are at least a few forum people that wouldn't mind a freindly game sometime, all we need is a venue. Any ideas?

Just strayed across this thread and thought people would be interested to know......

There's a poker club every Weds night, 8PM, at the OLD HEAVYGATE INN in Walkley. Just off Heavygate Rd.

We play for the love of the game...no money changes hands....and therefore totally legit. (Although it has been known for a hotly contested remaining free sarnie to be thrown into the pot!!) Good intro to playing face to face...Learn to keep a straight face....and decide if you can handle going to a casino and laying down yr sheckles.

It's a single table tournament (everyone starts with same value chips and play continues until there's a single winner). No Limit Texas Hold'Em

Takes about three hours to complete.

Friendly (if not sometimes fiercely competitive) play..all new comers welcome. If anyone needs a lesson before hand I'm willing to come early with me chips to do a 'rehearsal.' But I'll need to be warned first.

Yup Heavygate night still on ...and gaining in popularity since we first started. Now regularly have a two table tourney format. Still free. Still no prizes ...except the honour of winning. Still torture busting out!!

Me too. Rarely played and would need a few pointers first but it's a game on the up. I'd be up for £20 or so that we dont get the experts coming and wiping the floor with us.

I'm guessing pubs are out, so we are either looking at another type of venue or a big home!
