Hi everyone,

We are looking to move to Sheffield and to purchase a house up to £150k. Good public transport is essential, as in living in an area without yobs and littering problems. So we are thinking of looking at villagey areas near Sheffield (nr. tram would be excellent). So far we have come across names such as: Oughtibridge, Mosborough, Eckington. Please can you advise if any of these are any good or if other areas are recommended.
Thank you!
PS. Looking forward to the move- people up there seem really friendly and helpful!

I would not class any of the above areas as villages they all have problems of varying degrees start looking again somewhere else but I dont fancy you geting what you want with the price range you are requiring

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.
We haven't actually been to any of these areas (except Eckington, which had a notice regarding an arson attack in the centre that put us off). Not being from the area, any advice on where is affordable for us and nice enough would be recommended. Thank you!

if you want somewhere similar to those areas but more of a village feel. Harley is just over the border into rotherham and has great access to the M1 but also a main road into sheffield centre. It still has a village feel despite a new extension to the vilage in the form of 30 houses. It has it's own cricket pitch and football fields, has an excellent primary school in the next village and is far enough into the country that crime is still relatively unheard of.

you may be looking for the impossible in that price range :(

Have a look at some of Woodhouse - the train station can get you in to town in ten mins - impossible to do any quicker

Give the badger estate and the severnside a very wide berth though

It's S13 if you're using www.Vebra.com or blundells

we live in North Anston, the surrounding villages of Todwick, Kiveton and Harthill are all nice, nearby the M1, good buses and the train to sheffield - lincoln is in kiveton. Nice prices as well still, with some new build estates as well as excouncil/council estates as well.

Being born in Oughtibridge I think you would be very happy there.
Not sure if you have children or not but if so then they should be sufficiently educated at the local primary and would then move to Bradfield Secondary school which on GCSE results, is one of the best in the North of Sheffield.
There is also a park which is maintained by a park keeper, (rather rare for Sheffield now!)

I would ask the local estate agents what they think would be the best area depending on your criteria. Houses in Oughtibridge do move very quickly and you have a good mix of terraced, semi's and newly built detached homes to choose from.

I think where ever you live there will be things that happen that you don't agree whether it is noise, or traffic levels or drunken people leaving pubs in an evening.

Good luck in your search!

Try Totley. Its not a village exactly, but quite a village feel. Its close to open countryside. 97 bus into the city. You can find houses in you budget...just. There is one opposite me for £135k, so good luck.

try grenoside or ecclesfield /thorpe hesley not perfect by any means but better than the ones you mentioned.

Although I agree Grenoside is a nice area I disagree that either Ecclesfield or Thorpe Hesley are better than Oughtibridge. House prices are higher than either of those two places and that usually gives you a good idea as to how desirable an area is.

What's wrong with Oughtibridge?

The village of Stannington meets a lot of you're criteria. Good public transport links to Sheffield (with the Malin Bridge tram stop plus park & ride less than two miles away). Situated right on the edge of the beautiful Peak District, with a good range of shops and pubs in the village. It has a low crime rate (hope I'm not tempting fate!) and no worse a yob/litter problem than the 'best' areas of Sheffield. The only stumbling block may be your price limit of 150k - although this depends largely on what size of property you are looking for. Good luck anyway.

Well we've just boght a 3 bed semi for under £120k, in Hackenthorpe, huge garden and potential for house to be 5 bed. ok its not a village, but area seems nice enough.

i think house prices in sheffield are really cheap! try looking at house prices for lincoln, theyre outrageous!

I would definitely say Oughtibridge is worth a good look....a short drive up the road and you are on the edge of the Peak District with stunning views. Good transport links and services available as well.

Wadsley village is lovely- it has a real village atmosphere yet is only up the road from hillsborough, and wadsley common has fantastic walks and views into the peak.
There are four decent pubs within walking distance and some good local shops- I am not aware of any crime around here, and it is very quiet.
Good luck!

The village of Stannington (has) no worse a yob/litter problem than the 'best' areas of Sheffield..

Do you have stats to back that up?

My job takes me to virtually all suburbs of Sheffield and from personal experience, can confidently say that Stannington is one of the 'better' areas in this respect.
Furthermore, how possible is it to produce 'stats' to equate litter/yob problems?

Where do you live? I moved from Grenoside because of all the problems with gangs of youths around the park. People were getting muged and intimidated. Peoples cars were getting damaged when parked in the community centre car park and as for the pubs, the top red lion is like a western saloon. I now live at the top end of High Green and I love it, It is quite, there are no gangs of youths and my local pub is how pubs were ment to be! inviting and friendly.

My Mum still lives in Grenoside (which is were I was born) but my brothers and myself cant wait to get her out of there.

I would agree with this one - I live in Todwick and it really is a village. Public transport is acceptable with buses to Sheff, Roth and Meadowhall. Close proximity to both Kiveton and Dinnington both of which have local shops etc. 2 train stations in Kiveton and only 10 mins drive from Halfway tram park and ride or Crystal Peaks tram. Excellent access to M1, A1 and the M18 and the area has Good schools to add to its portfolio. There are some 3 bed semis in and around the price range quoted. Get the Dinnington and Maltby edition of the Worksop Guardian and the Rotherham Advertiser (both out on Fridays) and take a look at the properties on offer and would suggest that you have a drive round too. Happy house hunting !

Loxley and Bradfield are often over looked treasures in Sheffield - close to beautiful countryside with good transport links, and yet not classed as "touristy" - some villages near Sheffield become overwhelmed by day trippers on summer Sundays. Loxley is still pretty cheap as well. Good luck
