Plain Talker 05-12-2006, 07:47 There's a huge thread on WMCs somewhere on here, UHWMC is mentioned on it. There is now a nursing home, on the junction of Gleadless Road and Cat Lane, where the club used to be. (whereabouts in Perth, WA are you, tourist? I have an uncle close by there, in Kalamunda) toptourist 05-12-2006, 07:49 There's a huge thread on WMCs somewhere on here, UHWMC is mentioned on it. Plain Talker 05-12-2006, 08:13 Not been to Perth, no. I would like to go, but as I am a "flying-o-phobic" (lol ;) ) I doubt I'd manage a 24/28 -odd hour flight over to Australia. (I'm freaked out at the idea of a 2-hour flight to the continent, a trip to Barcelona, which I'd like to do next year. I reckon I will need serious counselling! lol I'm still in sunny Sheffield-on-sea (lol) I'm in Nether Edge/Sharrow, just by Psalter Lane (If you can remember your Sheffield geography?) heeleygirl 06-12-2006, 10:31 Does anyone remember the Upper Heeley Working Mans Club ? I remember the Upper Heeley WMC I lived on Fitzroy Road just down the road from the club and me and my brother Alan use to go on the club trips every year. My father was a life member of the club, and also use to sing on the clubs in the 50's. Don't no if you know but the site of the club is now a senior citizens home, but Cat Lane is still there. I seem to remember mentioning the nursing home in post #2 tosh13 06-12-2006, 16:05 As said in another post,my Mum worked there in the early 70s & my Dad was a member. artisan 07-12-2006, 14:32 I was a member what seems like centuries ago, in the 70's. As kids in the early 60's we used to go on the seaside trips, 7/6 spending money, and sandwiches I think, seemed like a fortune  smudge111 24-03-2008, 18:51 i should remember it i got engaged there new years eve packed to the rafters 1982 i saw chubby brown there £3 to get in wot a good club dogsneck 24-03-2008, 20:49 my grandad played billiards for the club, only man to win the marshal cup 3 times. Used to be a painter and decorater by day ,working for Bradburys ,then would transform into a tuxedo ,with dicky-bow outfit - then catch the single-deck 8 or 9 outside his house ,down to the club . I think he was the compare or similar but also gave the club a lick of paint when pushed! He was around his mid 50"s - I would be talking early 80"s.He was a real character. He used to live in the Vic Hallams nearest to City Road ,just after the nursing home. lakerman 25-03-2008, 19:50 I played snooker there a few times over the years. If I remember correctly the billiard room was upstairs and you had to access it via some stairs at the side of the concert room stage. We had a guy who played for us who was always skint and we usually ended up buying his beer on snooker nights. One night when we played at the Upper Heeley club he announced that he had a fiver and he would get the first round in (those were the days, a round for a fiver and still some change) He went to the bar and bought the round and proceeded to carry the beer upstairs on a tray. As he was about to enter the billiard room there was a step down which he didn't know about. He went full length out on the floor and spilled the contents all over the place. Not a drop left in any glass. He promptly picked himself up brushed himself down and without a flicker of emotion on his face said "can anyone lend me a fiver". A classic moment. Sadly the guy died a couple weeks ago. He was a real character. Well the story is true I just hope I have remembered the correct club. lindilu 29-03-2008, 15:32 Iused to go on the trips to seaside each year with this club. my grandad and uncles were all members.
