Just to flag up a planned day trip to Buxton. It will not be for a long hike but to take in sites, shops etc, with a shortish walk included. I'll come back and edit this post tomorrow with more details. :)

Please note, that contrary to initial appearances, this will not be a Sheffield Forum official walking group unofficial Christmas trip, but dedicated to lil ol' me's birthday! :hihi:

To fill people in on what's going on, we're planning a laid back day out that will incorporate a stroll round the country park, including Solomon's Temple, some crags, Poole's Cavern (allow entrance fee) and a wander round town taking in the sights, hopefully taking in a sip of the magical Buxton water at the pump rooms (find the man of your dreams? My a**e!) and the delightful lights etc. The 'walk' will not be prohibitive. All newbies and 'strollers' welcome for a relaxing day out. :)

Just to `re-fresh` this thread, the day is still going ahead, but we could do with car drivers, or just one car owner actually, to make it more successful. It seems such a long time to spend on public transport for the people who don`t possess a car (over an hour each way), so travel by car would be easier if there was someone prepared to use their own car.
Is is not intended to have this trip as a full-on walk, but more of a look round Buxton at the various attractions, do a bit of shopping, enjoy a pint or two (for which this group is becoming renowned!)and to look at the lights.
So for anyone who is interested in joining the group and may have been put off by the lengths of the walks so far, or might be wary of the weather forecasts this time of year, then this might be the ideal trip to meet the Walking Group, whilst enjoying a steady stroll round this delightful town

Waaahhhh! I'm going to miss this one, again. It sounds like a really good day out in Buxton too - lots of nice shops and things to do in the town. Even if you don't fancy a little walk (or if the weather deems it so).

Can we go again in the spring? pleasey weasy?!!:)

Purdy honey,

We're gonna join you next Sunday on your Birthday. :)

We'll bring both cars with us, one of which can fit four plus driver and the other which can only fit one plus driver.

Looking forward to it! Hope it snows :)

If this thread were a child it'd have been carted off into care for neglect!

Thanks to the people that have posted. Scubz's car is now full, so if Stagewalker's kind offer of a lift (in return for a bit of petrol dosh) is still open and people are stranded, try contacting him or leaving a mesage on this thread.

TBH I don't know Buxton at all, so I'm guessing where would be good to meet. On the street plan here (http://www.visitbuxton.co.uk/) you will see the car parks clearly marked. I suggest we meet in front of the town hall at 11 am. We could meet at *a* car park, but what if it turns out to be full, etc? Town Hall's simpler, and looks like this. (http://www.morten55.freeserve.co.uk/listed-bdgs/townhall.jpg) and is on the market place.

I'll try and do a bit more research on where to go and where to eat and drink etc. Bring lots of pocket money and festive cheer!

Newbie coming with me Sunday, not a Forum member, but if she ever becomes one, she`ll probably be known as Babyscubz!

Yup, my offer for lifts is still open. I've got a car and I'm not afraid to use it.

Purdy, given that I'll be using sat nav to get there, could you please get me a postcode for Buxton Town hall (I think I've got one here but just need another opinion as to whether I've got it right.) Either that or a road name for where we are meeting. Thanks.

If we're meeting about 11, I'd better pick tm up about 10. If anyone else wants a lift then talk to me so I can make arrangements to collect you.

I think Taxman would appreciate a lift, could you possibly email him to make the arrangements

What does one wear for a Sunday stroll in Buxton?

My jodphurs are at the dry cleaners and me very stylish gold lurex suit has gone funny in the wash.

Oh my!

Don't panic. An opera gown will suffice.

edit - the town hall postcode is SK17 6EL

An opera gown will look wonderful with my walking boots, thank you!

Why didn't I think of that?

Thanks for the postcode, it matches the one I found, so we're ok :)

Hey guys, it must have been a long day. I've been waiting for your reports on this walk and it's gone 11.30 and no feedback. Either you all found a really good pub you couldn't leave or you're huddled at the bottom of a crevass somewhere. Hope it was a good day.

lol. We were late back :hihi:

I can't speak for the others, obviously, but I had a good day

Our thirty mile hike in absolutely terrential weather was wonderful. The snow blizzard only lasted a few hours and when it calmed down it was quite simple to take refuge in a small cavern on the edge of the cliff with a depressed penguin with alcohol issues and apply ointment to our subsequent facial blisters. I wasn't aware that the day would include rock-climbing and absailing, but I'm pleased to say that they are now new found skills. I'm sure my broken ankle will be fine after a few days of being wrapped up in duct tape. I'm quite a hardy old stick really.

I was quite malnutritioned having survived on nothing but berries and dock leaves for the duration of the mountaineering expedition, which was pretty tough going. I thought we would find a nice little cafe somewhere in the mountains for a skinny latte and gratuitous cream cake, but sadly this was not to be. However the emergency Haagen-daazs 'strawberry cheesecake' flavour I had in my very expensive non-existent rucksack helped me through a very tricky period where I thought i would faint due to poor oxygen levels.

Overall, it was a wonderful day. I'm sure once I recover from my broken ankle, and I've stopped having flashbacks, I'll be up for another!

:)

You only did that so you could have a go in a helicopter!

It was grey, we went the wrong way, I got in a mood, Poole's Cavern was shut. We got told off for drinking coffee in a cafe which was a launderette. We thought there'd be loads of pretty bijou boutiques but there weren't. We had a fragile newbie to break in. We terrified the poor lad with our boots and hats. "Oh my God, you've all got rucksacks!" he said, panic stricken. We made sure his smart white shoes were thoroughly initiated by dragging him through some muddy fields full of dung!

This week's hostelry was the Sun Inn, very old and gloomily antique. I would have liked to have spent longer following the history and seeing the beautiful buildings. Buxton is grand on a petite scale, and on a sunny market day during the opera festival I hope it would have a bit more atmosphere than on the Sunday before Christmas.

Thank you to Scubz and Stagewalker for their driving, and thank you Kay and Bambi for the beautiful bracelet. Thank you especially, Stagey, for you know what.

Photos are rubbish this week. Sorry! (http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l115/purdyamos/Buxton/)
