View Full Version : Collecting Things
Lickable 07-09-2004, 14:42 Was just wondering if anyone has ever collected anything, only to realise some time later that it was a complete waste of time.
My collection is He-man stuff.
I have a Medium sized collection of He-man things, that i accidently started collecting.
I now have a load of boxes cluttering the house up and really wish i could bring myself to sell them.
I used to collect Panini football stickers. I still ahve all the books that I completed. Almost all my spending money was blown on them but I loved them.
I also collected action force figures, action men and matchbox cars.
DaBouncer 07-09-2004, 17:24 I collect money. Any currency accepted and age including shiny new stuff like 2004 pound coins.
If anyone wants to contribute to my collection feel free to PM me.
Thanks in advance
FairyNormal 07-09-2004, 22:16 I know this will sound really sad but I collect Ladybird books. I have well over 300 of them. I don't bother with the modern stuff, just the old ones up to about 1970. I have some original ones still in their paper covers. I love them but had to curb my buying as I have run out of space to put them. I also have a large collection of kids TV annuals such as Skippy, Vision On, Playschool, Camberwick Green etc etc and old pop annuals. I also have a random collection of stuff such as un-opened packs of 1960's stockings, 1950's educational flashcards (children of the world including zulus with spears and grass skirts etc!!) and all manner of useless rammel! I am the woman who buys stuff at jumble sales and flea markets that no-one else wants!!
I'm not as bad as I used to be, purely 'cos I have run out of space!!
Waltheof 07-09-2004, 23:19 Ha ha fetish fairy, you sound just like us, with a house full of junk and clutter...and maybe you will have missed something at a jumble sale because we got in first!
Seriously, we are trying to declutter (we saw those TV programmes where people were helped, we applied too and were interviewed but I suppose we weren't considered sufficiently interesting or quirky for the programme). As for books, between us we must have over 5,000 in the house, as I have been a collector since my teens (this would include about 1,000 pre-1800 books). But if you want string, or old screws, or spare door handles, we are your people (skip raiding a speciality!)
I collect old radio and electronics books - pre-1960....so if you have any I'm willing to purchase!!
I've started getting rid of some of my vast collection of amateur radio junk by the miracle that is ebaY. It's amazing what people will pay for something that I consider to be worthless.

alchresearch 08-09-2004, 12:01 I collect old eight-bit portable computers.

Well, back to my exciting life.............
PS I'm not mental. ;)

Glad to see i'm not alone! I have five Amstrad NC-100s though!
Not really a collection as such, but I have about 10 years worth of Melody Makers and NMEs in the attic. I'm a terrible horder and can't bring myself to throw them away.
Moon Maiden 08-09-2004, 13:17 I have never really completed anythign I started colelcting. I once started collecting postcards...then badges, then the sticker book things (my little pony)
The only thing I have now is my Dragons really. I get one of the year pieces every year from friends :)

I collect pounds (or kilos in new money). I have this special storage device which sits just above the belt line of the trousers and holds the majority of my collection. I have many ways of adding to it but the best ways are to drink too much beer or eat too many crisps.
I have also found to my horror that my prized collection depleates usually after frequent excercise and eating of salad and fruit.
I am currently the proud owner of 14 stones which I aim to reduce due to storage problems, to 13.
cosywolf 08-09-2004, 13:39 Mainly, books. All kinds of books. When my house grows up it wants to be a library
Dragons and gargoyles. They come to me randomly. I must just have that kind of face...lol
Wolf pictures, societies, and other paraphernalia...er, that might be my fault...
Historical artefacts, masses of - no comment
My husband collects - large numbers of unpaired socks, hundreds of t-shirts he will never wear again, dozens of trousers likewise, many strange gizmos designed to be worn on the belt - lighters, torches, phone holders, etc, bits of stuff that are 'important' though they look useless to me, bits of paper, magazines he never opens but 'has to keep', and soooo much more.
And it's all a waste of space really...except for the books
Classic Rock 08-09-2004, 13:45 As a kid I collected badges - I filled a coat with them. I think I just gave them away in the end.
I also collected scraps, I started off collecting just pictures of dogs and then when I only had dogs I collected cats and when I only had cats I got bored....and gave them all away.
I collected beer towels as a student, sewed them together and made a bed spread. It currently hangs up in the pub between the rooms behind the bar.
What else....um, I guess I used to collect analogue tapes of bands that I liked and tried to get everything they'd ever done. If it was on tape and I had everything, then I'd tape over them when I got bored with them....on high speed dub.
Oh yes, I collected stickers of the muppets that I put in a sticker album that I got free with Look In. I ended up with several of each type but never managed to fill the album. It got binned eventually.
Moon Maiden 08-09-2004, 13:49 I have a new collection, I am helping to collect money for the children of Beslan (http://www.moscowhelp.org/donate.htm)

FairyNormal 08-09-2004, 16:34 Oh and I almost forgot my collection of 1980's Smash Hits magazines!!!
Moon Maiden 08-09-2004, 17:37 OMG - I used to have a large collection of Smash Hits, Look In and Jackie magazine
Miss_smiley 08-09-2004, 20:51 I have put a hold in my purchases of Airfix weebles wobble people as they started taking over my dressing table. I originally purchased my first one since being a little person with the intention of giving it to a friend but ended up keeping it and getting rather addicted to buying loads on ebay.
wish i had started to collect something years ago, but started too late, i collect certain things for a year or so, then change my mind and collect something else, not able to stick to one certain thing, so i guess i can't call them a collection of any one thing, did get quite a few fridge magnets at one time as they were cheap and didn't take up much room, maybe i'll start that up again.
mitziwillow 02-10-2004, 15:15 As a kid I collected - stamps, matchboxes ( empty ) postcards and music magazines. Now I collect paperweights, teddies, perfume bottles and I am trying to collect Arthur Rackham books - but the best ones are expensive.

proofreader 06-10-2008, 17:23 If anyone collects pigs PM me.
Just cleared out my Grandma's loft and have a fair few. Will be selling them and would rather they went as a lot to someone who will enjoy them, even if i get less for them.

Cheese labels were all the rage in my year at school........ca 1954.
Did anyone else on here collect them?
