Are these websites any use to you?

http://www.sheffnet.net/

http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/

http://www.sheffieldscene.co.uk/home.html

This one's got a BIT about the history of Sheffield (but it's mostly about the steel industry):

http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/ITsheffield.htm

I hope they're not the ones you've already looked at.

As far as I know Sheffield is the 4th largest city in the UK (after London, Birmingham and Manchester).

I thought Leeds was the third or fourth biggest place in England....thats what ive seen quoted loads of times in West Yorkshire...about 30,000 bigger than Sheffield

isnt it 1. london 2.birmingham 3.glasgow 4.leeds 5. sheffield so sheffield is 4th largest in england, 5th in UK.

sheffield is std code 0114 = 4th largest. leeds is 0113 = 3rd largest

I wasn't sure, but this is what is posted on University of Sheffield's website:

Sheffield is England's fourth-largest city, with the wealth of facilities you would expect to find in a major city - yet it's compact, friendly and accessible. That's one reason why many students like living here so much that they stay on after graduating...

Don't know how accurate that is though.

Incidentally, isn't Manchester's std code 0161? So that doesn't follow your pattern.

Sheffield is the third largest City in England. Approx. 600,000 population.

Do not mention that West Yorkshire village just outside Bradford.

City of Manchester is small, Greater Manchester is a county and large but it includes Salford, Stockport etc.

Telephone codes have no relation to population.

Yeah its just a small town in Bradford.

Incidentally - here is my take

London
Birmingham
Manchester
Sheffield
Leeds

and remember size is not important,
Quality not quantity.

Oops, meant to say "England" and not "UK"...

Anyway, gloworm's population figures have clarified things!

b;loody hell - who gives a monkey's if sheffield is 4th or 5th biggest? Is this a hobby for Sheffielders or something - becasue within five minutes of moving here I have been bombarded with all this 4th largest rubbish

Especially as the city centre is tiny - the area covered by shops in the city centre is the same size as, say, ambridge which is 1/1oth of the size! And all the shops in other towns are way better.

Sheffield is hardly a heaving metropolis is it - so please stop it!

Well I am from Manchester, but have stayed in sheffield many times. Manchester is much bigger (still excluding salford and stockport).

It's not important either way....both nice cities

if you count the same sort of status boundries as sheffield (ie. when the houses stop!) sheffield is actually bigger than "Manchester" population wise. its only the fact when you add salford, stockport etc. and all the little cities within greater manchester it becomes larger.

there were plans at one time to rename most of south yorkshire greater sheffield...

Greater Sheffield! Sounds like a PR slogan. Why not Greatest Sheffield?????

Anyway! Sheffield's a pretty cool place for student life if you're after bars, clubs etc but is a bit short if you're after museums, theatres or even a good choice of cinemas. But also very close to some great countryside and the people are lovely! :D

I think this is one area where size definately does NOT matter!
Sheffield is brilliant - we have excellent sports and leisure facilities, a great nightlife, brilliant for shopping, and just a short drive away (or bus ride) from some of the best countryside in England!!!

Why should we, on your say-so? We happen to be proud of our City and we want to see it get its due. I don't know where you're from but you could always try telling us why your home town is so great and where you think it should fit in the "league". Either that or shut up!

I didn't think Ambridge was a real place anyway - isn't that where the Archers live? :D
