Can you tell the difference between haddock and cod from chip shops?? If so which do you consider to be superior?? Personally haddock is the fish for me, anyone else got any views on this??

Prefer Cod because they remove the skin in chippies.

They clearly do not!!!! Haddock is a smooth juicy silky fish whereas cod is as dry and a nun!! Haddock, clearly is the preferable fish!!

I genuinely can't tell teh difference from the local chip shop!!

Whether that's because I've never had them cooked well or not, I don't know, but from ANY chippy I just can't tell the difference!

When I cook them from fresh I can, and I like them both - I'd proably go for cod, though.

If your cod is dry, it's been badly cooked.

Haddock has bigger flakes and tastes very slightly stronger.I like them both, but Haddock is becoming more popular.

Hm.. I think you can, by the size of the flakes as said.
Usually they're different prices too.

Can't remember the last time I had fresh fish and chips though. :(
It's lovely when it's "just" cooked.

Actually not. It's rather a cheap, tasteless fish as opposed to Turbot.

I don't know where you get yours from but it certainly isn't cheap or tasteless in my experience.

Which one is it that has the tapeworm thing in it? I saw a bloke remove one once and he said that everybody who eats either Haddock or cod doesnt know about it and swallows the worm.

Yummy.

Evidently you can't have the option of comparing Cod and Haddock in batter, according to the owner of the Chippy at the Minehead Butlins. We went in and asked for Cod and were told that Cod in batter fell apart, I told him that he was wrong as Cod is the premier choice "Up t'North". He then informed me that he'd been in the business for 20 years, seemed slightly miffed when he was informed that he'd been doing it wrong for 20 years, wonder if our "Chish 'n' Fips got gobbed on?

Haddock usually has the skin on in chippies!
Haddock is more fleshy & tastes slightly more sweeter.
Cod is fine but Haddock is better just leave the skin.

No this was an actual pale coloured worm, about 5 inches long that this geezer pulled from the rear end of a cooked haddock or cod.
Come to think of it, it might have been Cod.

Whatever, - if it had been immersed in boiling oil for a while it would be dead wouldn't it ? :suspect:

I used to like the big lumps of moist flaky cod in crisp batter you got in Scarborough chippies, - but that was a lifetime ago :(

And ISTR Cod was a tanner and Haddock 9d.

All fish have fish worms. They are a clear thin looking worm that thrive on fresh fish.
If you eat fish you have ate the worm, guarenteed.
I use to manage a chippie both had fish worm.
If you buy fresh fish & you see the worm wriggling you've got a very fresh fish.
If it was dead you wouldn't see it but it wouldn't be as fresh as where you saw on wriggling.
It won't hurt you & is very normal.

Actually Cod is getting scarce. No kidding. When I was young it was a cheap dinner. Not now its dearer than rump steak.

I had Panda when I was in China....

(Only kidding)

Cod is more expensive these days cos it's overfished.
Maybe it's Haddock that's in fish n chips these days.

From somebody who has been eating fish and chips for well over 40 years - haddock is slightly more oily, greasier than cod, and cod has larger "flakes" and tastes sweeter.

For deep frying, cod every time.

Haddock is best smoked and oven cooked in milk with a bit of butter.

Ialways know the difference, haddock has a stronger flavour. Regarding worms, I once found one in a piece of cod from sainsbury's. I took it back, totally horrified, only to be told it is quite normal. I didn't eat fish for ages after that.

I'm serious. We're still eating cod as if there was no problem, but it could easily be wiped out if we don't change our habits http://www.rspb.org.uk/policy/marine/news/sustainable.asp
