Reading the Metro on the bus this morning.
On page 19 is a review of a new CD - 'Dave Godin's Deep Soul
Treasures Vol.4'

Back in the late sixties I was an avid reader of Blues and Soul
Magazine and I loved to read Dave's column - it brought
a touch of class to the Soul scene.

Does Dave still live in Sheffield ?

He often had letters published in the Star and

I know some years ago he was involved with the Anvil Cinema.

He ran the Anvil Cinema I think - he was Sheffield City Council's Film Officer.

I well remember his outspoken libertarian columns in various fanzines and free mags.

And I believe it was him who coined the phrase 'Northern Soul' to distinguish the upbeat soul style favoured by northern DJs and clubbers on their visits to his shop in London.

A fascinating chap all round.

That's right - I went down to London one weekend to visit
the shop - see Dave and take in Aretha Franklin at
Hammersmith Odeon.

Got to the shop and to my surprise it was closed -with a note
on the door explaining that Dave had shut early to go 'Up North'
to a dance venue !!!

Aretha was superb so the journey was well worth it.

Cheers Chris
