View Full Version : Warmest November ever.
Starting to get a bit scary this global warming.
The warmest November since records began? This is the real impact of global warming and it seems to be happening more and more quickly.
Glad that Sheffield is many feet above sea level or else we'll all be getting our feet wet sooner rather than later!
Maybe - but we'll see what the whole winter brings. The recent trend has been to have a mild autumn but a poor spring (with cool/damp weather stretching into April/May).
CaptainSwing 30-11-2006, 10:43 November mean isn't out yet as we're still in November, but yes, it is looking like being the warmest since records began in 1659, to add to this year's July (which was also the warmest month in the record, not just the warmest July) and September. This year's October was also the equal 3rd warmest since the record began. August was mediocre however.
Cut the crap about global warming, try getting up at 5am and going to work and tell me if its warm, like hell, all these scientists are off there heads, temperatures go up a degree and all hell brakes loose, same as reducing emissions from vehichles, leeds council spending millions on buses to reduce it,take a look at earth from space people,do you eally think a few buses are going to make that much difference? don't think so.
We've been going on about global warming for years and making all these changes to avoid it,and lo and behold its not working, get real,by the time we stsrt to make any impact on global warming we will be long gone so forget it and live your life out, have some fun.Stop worrying cos it aint going to change a thing.

Top Stuff Rocky, well said!!
There is absolutely no "crap" being talked about global warming. It makes me so sad when people go on about how it's not happening. It is. The evidence isn't hard to find. And it's our grandchildren and their children who are going to suffer when crops won't grow because the temperature isn't right, when many hundreds of bird species go extinct because their migratory patterns have been messed up, when flowers aren't pollenated because there aren't birds around to do it.
I'm pretty sure 5am these days is warmer than 5am 20 years ago.
Of course increasing spending on public transport in just Leeds isn't going to help, but if every town and city in the world works to reduced the number of vehicles on the road, of course that's going to help. Let's try and see the bigger picture here.
It's not working because the major damage has already been done. We can only work now to stop more damage happening, and tp try and fix some of the damage that we have done.
I get up at 5.00 and yes it is cold. However, is it as cold as it was ten/fifteen years ago.
No a few buses won't make a difference but this and other strategies might if not to us then certainly to future generations.
Anyone who doesn't believe in global warming by now obviously aren't paying attention. I saw a wasp the other day, and a bee, in late November!
Suggesting we "just enjoy ourselves and get on with it" are being selfish in the extreme, and the ignorance is startling.
Flat landers look here:-

Sorry people,i bet you've got cars ,i bet you use some sort of aerosols and fridges, catch busses, what is it you are doing exactly to change the world?
What were you doing on the 30th of november 10 years ago or even 20 years ago that was such a turning point in your lives that you can compare temperatures between now and then.
Im sure that you all love the birds and the bees and flowers but do you actually care for the birds and bees and flowers, let me think,Whats the first thing anyone does when a bee or a wasp comes near them, mmm! let me think, run for it in shear terror, you know exactly what i mean,if you care about the flowers then why dont you stop them cutting them and selling them in shops, abd as for birds, how many of you have a bird table in the back garden? So when i say live your life and get on with it,go for it,because really your such hipocrits.
Global Warming is just an excuse so the government, god bless them, can tax us more and more and more and more.............
Its all about the mighty

No it isn't. They can tax us to hell without "inventing" problems.
you can't blame the government,if you paid less tax in your pay packet this week is that going to make much difference? The only people you can blame is yourselves, the human race as a whole,we screwed it up and now we are moaning at the fact of paying the price. The big question is what you want to do about it? Well, you can talk to the government or greenpeace or you can go round to your local power station and tell them to STOP!!! you wish,or you could try this,Turn off all your lights ,unplug the fridge, scrap your car, walk to work(and back)turn off all your electric stop smoking,do away with all the things you use that contribute to global warming(after all its a start) When you've done all that tell me how much you think the planet has warmed up in the last 10/15 years.
I just hate the way that Tony Blair is so self obsessed about global warming, and then hes after a private jet? Its a constant tax on motorists in the name of global warming, yet our taxes are going to go towards a PRIVATE JET.
I saw a wasp the other day, and a bee, in late November!
Saw a wasp myself yesterday, buzzing around without a care in the world.
Never saw them after September when I was a kid.
Sorry people,i bet you've got cars ,i bet you use some sort of aerosols and fridges, catch busses, what is it you are doing exactly to change the world?
Well, my energy supplier uses green energy. I have reusable shopping bags. I bought a bike, and use it. I moved to live close to where I worked. (I now work from home)
Most Sundays I volunteer to do conservation in and around Sheffield.

Sledging.

I have bird food out in the winter. Not all people kill wasps and bees. And what on earth has it got to do with global warming anyway? Swatting a wasp just does not compare to the consequences of global warming.
Am I a hypocrite for trying? Am I a hypocrite for saying there is a problem? I don't think so.
Am I a hypocrite for trying? Am I a hypocrite for saying there is a problem? I don't think so.
No I personally don't think you're a hypocrite, just naive to think that it will make any difference. Why should you have to go out of your way when people like TB get a Private Jet with your money?
The only people you can blame is yourselves, the human race as a whole,we screwed it up and now we are moaning at the fact of paying the price. When you've done all that tell me how much you think the planet has warmed up in the last 10/15 years.
So are you saying we have or we haven't changed the climate?
Also, do you mean "yourselves" or do you mean "ourselves", you are human right?
No I personally don't think you're a hypocrite, just naive to think that it will make any difference. Why should you have to go out of your way when people like TB get a Private Jet with your money?
It's the tragedy of the commons all over again. Ah well.
There is talk here about the world we are creating for our children and grandchildren as though they will be incapable of looking after themselves and we have to set the world out for what is always an unknown future. When in history has anyone done anything for the future generations when there is so little evidence that it is needed? If and when people see real evidence of global warming and evidence that it is in fact harmful they may do something about it. Until then all the tree huggers are p***ing the wind.
The fact that the government makes so much money out of promoting climate change makes me very cynical as to their motives.
Remember when you were young and it used to snow all the time in winter, and properly snow, 6,4,5 foot deep - them were the days :)
Now you're lucky if you get one good snow fall a year in this neck of the woods!
While I support any attempts at reducing global warming, if the UK stopped producing ALL it's CO2 emissions, within 12 months, China will have replaced it.
It feels futile doesn't it, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try in some way, although banning cars and taxing fuel to hell is not the way to do it.
If we have made a difference to global warming then why is the planet warming up? Why are some people moaning about it? We haven't/aren,t and never will stop global warming. Its a nature thing and theres nothing on this earth or any other part of the universe thats going to stop it.
Remember when you were young and it used to snow all the time in winter, and properly snow, 6,4,5 foot deep - them were the days :)
Now you're lucky if you get one good snow fall a year in this neck of the woods! It's definately not as cold, no question, but so what?

Little evidence!? My god. The fact that people still think this horrifies me.
If and when people see real evidence of global warming and evidence that it is in fact harmful they may do something about it.
What evidence would satisfy you? I assume none of this:-

How high would the sea have to rise? How many "warmest months on record" would it take? How many extinct species? How many displaced refugess?
The fact that the government makes so much money out of promoting climate change makes me very cynical as to their motives.
The government taxes to pay for government, the NHS, schools etc. You've gone and confused the government with Tesco. A Labour governments motive is to tax and spend and stay in power, which means stealth tax and spend. How well they spend the money they collect is what matters.

China have recently said they will reduce their CO2 if the west does. Can't find a reference sorry.
Richard,i think you gone off the rails somewhere mate,i never said that global warming didnt exist,i said so what, everbody is going on about how its warming up and all that crap, now you can throw as much evidence and statistics at me as much as you like but it aint hitting the spot, and that is no matter how much we try or talk about it,it just isn't changing anything.
Does it really matter if its warming up,at the end of the day while ever theres war and destruction(bless our lads in iraq- come home soon boys) then theres more important things that we can do.Lets get the army boys home, lets get our streets cleared of crime and drugs and drunken louts and drink drivers, these are what destroy our children and families,so don't talk to me about the planet warming up.
It's definately not as cold, no question, but so what?
So...
its...
warmer!
As in global warming. As in noticeable change within your lifetime, which in planetary terms, is a short period of time. What happens if the trend continues? How will the various mechanisms on this planet react? Ice flows melt, glaciers recede, oceans cool, ocean currents become effected and the seas rise. Millions suffer, places like Bangladesh are only just above sea level. Holland has huge parts below sea level.
Map showing consequences of sea rise for varying levels of sea rise.

Richard,i think you gone off the rails somewhere mate,
No need to get personal.

If evidence doesn't hit the spot what will? I agree whatever we say on the forum is unlikely to change anything though.
Does it really matter if its warming up,at the end of the day while ever theres war and destruction(bless our lads in iraq- come home soon boys) then theres more important things that we can do.
Yes it does matter. Global warming could well cause war due to the huge numbers made homeless, and will cause destruction.
Lets get the army boys home, lets get our streets cleared of crime and drugs and drunken louts and drink drivers, these are what destroy our children and families,so don't talk to me about the planet warming up.
Um. But that's what the topic is.
Little evidence!? My god. The fact that people still think this horrifies me.

How high would the sea have to rise? How many "warmest months on record" would it take? How many extinct species? How many displaced refugess? How much has the sea risen at Blackpool or Scarborough or Majorca or anywhere? It's a bit warmer but so what as I said in last post. How many displaced refugees are there so far due this. Is it about none?

A Labour governments motive is to tax and spend and stay in power, which means stealth tax and spend. How well they spend the money they collect is what matters.I'm not talking about what they spend it on I'm talking of how they are raising it. The government is collecting a massive amount of extra tax for so called environmental reasons such as charging more road and fuel tax on bigger cars and the huge taxes on waste proposed taxes on numerous other things.
If you look out of the window of an aeroplane on any journey and see just how big the expanse of rural land is that all this pollution has to ruin in relation to the size of urban, industrialised areas, it's massive. Not only only does this pollution have to cover all that area but it has to fill it upwards too to the edge of the atmosphere 60 miles up. The area it needs to effect to make a difference is too big to contemplate.
Let the people of the future save the planet if it's necessary and if it's a doomsday scenario don't have any more kids.
Yes but richard( nothing personal to you) without being in sensitive, millions may suffer, but the question still remains"what are we going to do about it"? Can we really stop the ice melting? can we stop the seas currents? We can't even stop a blooming river from flooding so what chance have we got against the biggest mass on earth? I think its time to give up the ghost because while ever you,ve been replying to this thread the planet may have got a little warmer but no one has stopped it or made a difference.
I didnt say global warming will cause war what im saying is theres more important immediate issues we can do something about.
I saw a wasp the other day, and a bee, in late November!
I saw a butterfly the other day which quite surprised me.
How much has the sea risen at Blackpool or Scarborough or Majorca or anywhere?
From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4651876.stm
"Australian researchers found that sea levels rose by 19.5cm between 1870 and 2004, with accelerated rates in the final 50 years of that period."
It's a bit warmer but so what as I said in last post. How many displaced refugees are there so far due this. Is it about none?
From:-
http://environment.about.com/od/globalwarming/a/envirorefugees.htm
In China, the Gobi desert expands more than 10,000 square kilometers per year, threatening many villages. Oxford-based expert Norman Myers says Morocco, Tunisia and Libya each lose over 1,000 square kilometers of productive land annually to desertification.
In the United States, Louisiana now loses roughly 65 square kilometers per year to erosion by the sea, while in Alaska 213 communities are threatened by tides that creep roughly 3 meters further inland each year.
For above also see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3940399.stm
The low-lying Pacific island state of Tuvalu has struck an agreement with New Zealand to accept its 11,600 citizens in the event rising sea levels swamp the country.
So, more than "about none".
I'm not talking about what they spend it on I'm talking of how they are raising it. The government is collecting a massive amount of extra tax for so called environmental reasons such as charging more road and fuel tax on bigger cars and the huge taxes on waste proposed taxes on numerous other things.
So, what your saying is that Global Warming is a lie to get Mr average to pay more to run his 4x4? Quite a Sledgehammer to crack that nut.
If you look out of the window of an aeroplane on any journey and see just how big the expanse of rural land is that all this pollution has to ruin in relation to the size of urban, industrialised areas, it's massive. No. The pollution does not need to do this. The ozone layer contains only a few parts per million of ozone but protects us from the worst of the suns UV rays.
Let the people of the future save the planet if it's necessary and if it's a doomsday scenario don't have any more kids.
All your links and posts contain words like, if, might, possibly, could do, maybe, what if. It's all a big definately maybe. I am saying the cause of global warming is a lie and there has been plenty written about that too, I'll not bother looking for link cos you won't believe them same as I don't believe yours. Maybe one day I'll be proved wrong, it might possibly happen but then I could get run over by a bus later and then nothing will matter. Chill out (no pun) it's just speculation to make polical capital and stop worrying about it.

No respectable scientist would ever claim that there is one single cause. The fact is that the earth is heating up; the worry is how hot it'll get and what we can do about it. Manmade effects can be altered, but natural ones cannot; so, if you have at least two brain cells, you focus your efforts on altering the manmade effects, in case those are significant.
If they turn out not to be significant, you've spent a lot of money which hasn't done anything about global warming, but has vastly reduced the amount of pollution in the world, which is probably a good idea anyway.
If you don't do anything, and they do turn out to be significant, we're all dead.
Which side of the gamble do you want to be on?
Maybe one day I'll be proved wrong, it might possibly happen but then I could get run over by a bus later and then nothing will matter.
Ah, well; if you are so selfish as to consider that anything happening after your death is of no possible concern to anybody and you don't need to do anything about it, there really isn't much point discussing the issue. Might I ask if you've also borrowed a vast sum of money to be repaid by your descendants after your death? After all, it'll be after your death so nothing will matter, will it?
Starting to get a bit scary this global warming.
The warmest November since records began? This is the real impact of global warming ...
Wrong. This is a statisical aberration. One datum cannot possibly prove or disprove global warming either way; your claim is every bit as stupid as the claims on here, back in July, that because we had a cold day global warming didn't exist.
If they turn out not to be significant, you've spent a lot of money which hasn't done anything about global warming, but has vastly reduced the amount of pollution in the world, which is probably a good idea anyway.
Which side of the gamble do you want to be on?It would be nice to think I had a couple of brain cells yes, I'm not questioning anyones intelligence in this discussion though as you are. Of course it is prudent to take precautions against things but it's a question of how many precautions about some thing which seems to have rather a lot of hypotheticals in it.
That was more to make a point about possiblys and maybes. I have taken precautions not to burden anyone with any of my debts but that is because it's proven that people can sometimes die unexpectedly and it would be a fact that any debts would have to be met afterwards, not speculation.
People say a lot about being selfless but what are they ACTUALLY doing, still travelling around by some means or other, still consuming, still typing into their computer that uses energy to manufacture and run and has parts which are supposedly hazardous for disposal. Where do we draw the line? People draw the line in different places according to their lifestyle. A lot of hypocracy methinks. I'm not a hypocrite, just selfish. ;)
Anyone in this debate familiar with "Butterflies and Hurricanes" theory and that yeah, it aint no big deal right now but stuffin' yer fingers in your ears and sayin' "it aint my problem" will come back an bite you in the butt. .
All your links and posts contain words like, if, might, possibly, could do, maybe, what if. Maybe one day I'll be proved wrong, it might possibly happen but then I could get run over by a bus later and then nothing will matter.
My emphasis.
Maybe one day you'll run out of tea bags, but I suppose you wont buy any because you could get run over by a bus later and then nothing will matter.
I also have a problem with this idea of not planning for the future issues. It's something that has been done in this country for centuries. We were coppicing our woodlands from at least the 16th Century, rather than just taking what wood we required.
My emphasis. Glad you spotted them, that was my point.
Maybe one day you'll run out of tea bags, but I suppose you wont buy any because you could get run over by a bus later and then nothing will matter. That's just silly because I know I'll run out of teabags and that is more likely than being run over and besides they can be used at my funeral
I also have a problem with this idea of not planning for the future issues. It's something that has been done in this country for centuries. We were coppicing our woodlands from at least the 16th Century, rather than just taking what wood we required. That was something that had a proven advantage which worked and that advantage was for the benefit of the persons doing the coppicing and their immediate descendants not the entire world.
Glad you spotted them, that was my point.
But the point they make is that the use of if and when is entirely dependent upon the object of the sentence! Argh, I've had enough of this.

cressida 30-11-2006, 18:26 if Tony Blair went on an ordinary plane, the security measures would be immense, this would affect other passengers who would soon be complaining about any delay etc.
Yellowrose 30-11-2006, 18:44 I wont be contributing the the global warming debate, but would just like to add that on the gardening and allotment group, I started a thread about everything being confused in my garden and coming into leaf/flower at wrong times. If your garden is confused and you would like to add to this debate I would be interested to read your post.
nightwish 01-12-2006, 11:07 Yes my daughter is 10 now and she has never been sledging it never seems to snow deep enough or long enough any more this is the most notable change that I have noticed.
We used to be out sledging every winter and end up totally drenched and freezing cold but still enjoyed it.
cgksheff 01-12-2006, 11:37 I live in Sheffield and my children have been sledging every winter since they were born.
