View Full Version : Cooling towers blasting
Mr Goose 29-11-2006, 14:06 Does anybody know if the public can go on the viaduct to watch the heinous cooling towers being blown up?
Its going to be some time in Jan, and the M1 will need to be closed... could be a good photo opportunity.. :hihi: :hihi:
Blade1983 29-11-2006, 14:11 you'll probably need to be further back than that.... I'm guessing.
you can get a really good view from the top of the hill (up Wincobank I think)

That had occurred to me also!! Be a bit too close for comfort

Yes, but it will make it seem exciting......
Blade1983 29-11-2006, 14:19 and maybe a tad deadly

I would have thought there were hundreds of places in sheffield where you can see the cooling towers blown up so any body who wants to see can
If it's fine you could go to Ringinglow and watch.

But I want the dust cloud to roll over me and bits of concrete clatter to the floor at my feet like a scene from a Bond move...
KJ_VENOM 29-11-2006, 14:57 when are they going to be blown up/in has it been decided that would be great to watch

First clip on this list (http://www.bbc.co.uk/nationonfilm/topics/textiles/).
I thought they were turning them into some kind of art work
I’d heard that when they do decide to blow them up (down), they weren’t going to tell anyone to stop crowds gathering. The M1 will have to be closed so they don’t want hoards of people adding to any congestion. Also, as the motorway will be closed, a time when the motorway isn’t used as much would be picked – blast time would likely be around 6 a.m. on a Sunday – nice wake up call for the locals!!!
I’m not sure whether this is true or not though. When they do blast them, the number of people needed to support the blast will be immense: Police to close the M1; a person to detonate the explosives; the odd roadsweeper to clean the dust up; a person or two to check that the M1 is safe to re-open…
I’ve also heard that the holes to accept the explosives have already been drilled.
Thinking about it, Christmas Day would be a nice quiet day to demolish them.

Consider the explosives to be an artistic expression of dumping two piles of crap. :)
The bang could be a representation of common sense escaping from the cretinous arty farty types.

And if you go, don't forget to bring a ton of tissues with you - the rose-tinted spectacles brigade will need them :hihi: ,,, er,, can't they bring their own...
Still, it'll be one less eyesore in Sheffield ...only 10,000 to go :hihi:

So we're rose tinted because we have a different opinion to you?
I wish I lived in such a black and white world! Mine is way too complex, trying to please everyone not just my own crusade.
Want to swap?

carpetviper 29-11-2006, 19:44 I hope it wipes the viaduct out that will serve them right for destroying a sheffield land mark.
reditiger 29-11-2006, 19:53 it will be so weird driving over the bridge and not seeing them there...whenever i drive past them i always think 'ahhhh nearly home'
Lindseyw 29-11-2006, 19:54 I heard that the people going the blowing up have to pay a HUGE deposit to the council against damages to the M'Way
simondjuk 30-11-2006, 07:32 it will be so weird driving over the bridge and not seeing them there...whenever i drive past them i always think 'ahhhh nearly home'
Im with you on this. You always know you are near home when you see them

I often know when my train is getting near to sheffield becuase of the stench from the Blackburn Meadows Sewage Treament Works. However, this does not make Blackburn Meadows a "Landmark"
Just because something is distinctive, it does not mean it should be preserved for all time as a landmark.
lucazade2007 30-11-2006, 07:59 Whens it going to get blown up?
KJ_VENOM 30-11-2006, 09:18 they are useless eyesores that will be demolished, they wont be turned into giant flower vases or even worse multi-coloured eyesores:rant:
alchemist 30-11-2006, 09:45 Maybe, but does Sheffield REALLY need another tract of disused weed covered wasteland?? At least the towers are a useful landmark

As far as I know, there is a developer lined up for the site... as soon as the cooling towers get blasted
Well I will certainly miss them when they go. I see them everyday from my apartment in town, and the view will be poorer without them. It's sad that people seem so keen to get rid of a landmark that has been around for a lot longer than most of us...
tinsel_ninja 30-11-2006, 10:27 Sad that they're going, however, i reckon that when they do get blown up, the foot bridge from meadowhell interchange into the shopping centre would be a great place to watch from.
alchemist 30-11-2006, 11:36 What on earth would a developer put there? after all its prime land smack between a sewage farm and a moterway with crap access!! Who is this mysterious developer and how will they provide the thousands of jobs EON claim will come?
I will miss seeing them every morning when I get up

That is exactly what I was going to say. You pro-developers ever walked along the canal to Rotherham? The stentch from those sewer works is incredible, its quite staggering that humans can produce a smell so horiffic. Ever heard the noise from the M1? Gonna need a bit more than some double glazing to keep the constant noise out. It will be a shame to see them go because nothing useful can ever replace them.
I can't see them demolishing them without damaging the viaduct. It is structurally inherently weak anyway! As for not telling people when they are doing it .... the logistics behind the demolition must be imense and I don't think it could be kept quiet.
Mr Goose 30-11-2006, 12:15 It will be a shame to see them go because nothing useful can ever replace them.
Hmmmmmmmmmm a sweeping statement indeed...

Brilliant - the world's a poorer place without Fred Dibnah. Love the guy.

Ok Mr Goose lets have some ideas then......
I like the way you didn't bother to respond to the rest of my post.

Just because it smells at the moment, doesn't mean that nothing can be built there. It would be an excellent place for an illegal immigrant holding camp.
Or some industry where the smell can be a problem would probably be keen for the site, like a meat rendering factory :gag:
Mr Goose 30-11-2006, 14:45 To respond to Stormy's points...

- Smells... Blackburn Meadows STW needs capacity and reworking. It is a problem for Canal walkers, but its more of a problem for nearby residents. However, I think the area needs to be looked at *as a whole*. The current Cooling towers site could be useful to make several ideas work properly.
- The M1 junctions are at (or are near to) capacity. Tweaking needs to be done to the road layout - esp to take local traffic away from the Motorway roundabouts. Otherwise there are going to be problems in bringing in more development to the rest of the Don Valley.
- The Blackburn Meadows nature reserve needs to be protected, but opened up more for visitors
- Being "pro-development" does not mean you need to be pro ALL development - it needs to be thought about rationally - how it can contribute to all the "legs" of sustainability in an area.
- Rotherham residents needs to gain from the increased economic activity in Sheffield as well..... public transport links (say S Tram extensions) may not work on the top or bottom of the Don Valley.
- The Canal needs to be utilised as a major resource - we could think about moving high bulk/regular loads along it - but wharfage facilities could be required.
- I agree that the noise (and more importantly air quality) problems from the M1 are significant - but the vile Hellhall functions......

Some interesting points. Apologies if i seemed abrupt earlier.
Perhaps the land could do with some development, im not really arguing against that, but do we really need to lose the towers in order do the above?
The towers dont actually take up that much ground space, so I dont see how improving the M1 Jcns or supertram extension would be hindered by the towers in their present state. Health and safety strikes again perhaps?
As for the canal, I cant really see that becoming a useful venture, what do we need a canal for to move goods from Sheffield to Rotherham?
Ill freely admit I know nothing about the perceived problems faced at the STP so I cant argue against your points there.
But one things for sure, it does look like the towers will go, and I for one think its a shame.
Mr Goose 30-11-2006, 15:44 Apologies if i seemed abrupt earlier.
No problem, and likewise apologies if I appeared confrontational - it just grated to be called a "pro-developer" when I actually used to be a full time paid research officer for GreenPeace UK!
alchemist 30-11-2006, 15:57 All the points are valid. I am not against development but I cant see the type EON are imagining will happen will happen or be any use. The towers would not stop any development in the area and if anything could be imaginately incorporated into development proposals. I apologise if imaginately isnt a word :)
