No, i'm not saying that it's great, i'm asking what the rules are.

I currently have a gigabyte 7600gt, i'm just reading a review about am XFX 7950gt based board. Since my gigabyte is a silently cooled card, I'm very interested in the 7950 which is also a silent solution.

Can the two cards be combined using SLI, from what I understand the ATI crossfire technology allows for 2 different cards to be used, but I can't see whether nvidias sli allows for the same thing.

i would like to say yes but i should imagine mixing speeds, models and brands maybe mix for disaster.

2) Mixing Cards: You can use a GeForce 7800 GTX from manufacturer ABC with a GeForce 7800 GTX from manufacturer XYZ. However, you must still use two graphics cards that have the same GPU. For example, a GeForce 7800 GT must be matched with another GeForce 7800 GT (not with a GeForce 7800 GTX or a GeForce 6800 Ultra). Likewise, you cannot mix the GeForce 7800 GTX 512 with the GeForce 7800 GTX. Look here for more information.

Why not hang on a bit and wait for the 8800 cards to come down a little in price? Current graphics cards are a bit of a dead end as regards next gen graphics as far as I can tell.

Just had a look at the 8800 cards, at the moment there is only 1 silent 8800 card I can find and it's prices at £500. So I think not for the moment.

I think i'll do a bit more reading about this silent 7950 and see what's what.

Well it took at least a year or 2 for DX9 games to become prevalent and I reckon it's going to be the same for DX10, particularly as it's Vista only as well.

no im 99% certain that different models CANNOT be mixed. cards must be of the same type for the thing to work. plus its not a X2 speed increase.
