View Full Version : How long does it take to get a job???

Im really unhappy in my current job, if i was to hand my notice in (1 months), are agencies quick at finding work??? I have been applying for permanent vacancies, but obviously they take longer.

I work in an office environment, and am on a high salary with supervisory experience, but I would be willing to take a big paycut, just to leave my job!

Just wondered how long it took other people to find jobs, what agencies they reccommend, and have they regretted it??

I have also had a lot of time off work due to sickness, would this affect getting a temp job???

Thanks

I left my well paid job and moved over here with just the money I had left after I had paid my months bills..

Registered with and visited every agency I could find, then by chance I walked past an agency and registered. They phoned me up the following day and asked me to come in for a chat. I was in the agency for 10 and he'd set me up with an interview for 11 and by 12 I'd been offered the job!

Left Sheffield and within 10 days I'd found a new job!

Agencies can always find you work quickly, besides you can do one job till you find another that you'd enjoy more  I say go for it!

NEVER quit a job until you have something to go into, anything at all. Don't burn your bridges.

nuttygirl id normally agree with you, but my bridges are already burned with my employer as im undergoing a disciplinary procedure for my sickness. so at the moment im finding it hard to apply for other jobs, and its making me more ill and stressed, so i really just want to leave, take a less stressful job and try and be happy!

d2j, thanks for the hope, ive never been with an agency before, so im not aware of how they work really! do you get paid monthly and do you work any time in hand??

Umm I believe I worked a week in hand yeah, I reckon most agencies would pay weekly then if you get taken off their books and employed directly then they give you a P45 for your new employer. That's how it worked with me..

This was my first time with an agency as well, had the same job since I was 19 you see so this is only my 2nd ever job..

Hi - It sounds as though you are having a tough time - I hope that the action that is being taken is legitimate (and you don't feel that you are being unfairly treated due to genuine sickness/absence)...If you are on high salary/supervisory experience, try to maintain your confidence in applying for new positions - it's easy to say "i'll take a pay cut to be happy" but you need to show prospective employers that you are worth the salary that you are capable of earning...(if that makes sense).

Thanks Liose, at the moment I am doubting my ability to get a job on the same level or higher as the work I have been doing although stressful, isnt that high powered. My job differs very much from my job description, and I havent learnt anything new although Ive worked there for a year.

So im stuck in a rut and deperate to move :)

the action they are taking is legitimate, although i do feel a bit victimised as other members of staff have reached the 'maximum' number of days off and not had any action.

But enough moaning, i NEED a job! roll on new year! :)

If they don't apply a policy consistently then it's definitely questionable, have you involved your union? Or failing that get some free advice from the CAB or a private solicitor.

Finding new work depends so much on the industry and yourself that it's very difficult to say.
Personally I'd be reluctant to resign first, look for a job whilst still there, arrange interviews after/before work or during your lunch hour if you can.

i agree with the person above. dependent on your work sector you may struggle to find something perfect straight away - always better to have something to go to, then there's less stress.

im not really bothered about the work environment tbh, i thought temping might also be a good opportunity t try an environment i wouldnt necessarily apply for!

anyone found their perfect job through temping??? (part from d2j!)

It's all about luck really.

I found my first job 18 years ago by writing to firms asking if they had any vacancies. The first place I contacted gave me an interview the second a job.

I then worked for the same guy for 15 years before taking over the business.

I think of myself as very lucky, but I know it doesn't work for everyone.

Good luck in your search.

I left a job I hated and was driving me daft. I found work in 2 days.

I left a company when it closed down and was working in 3 days.

When that placed closed I was unemployed for 4 days.

Not bad in 27 working years.

Anyway I disagree with nuttygirl. If you hate your work it can cause so much stress it's just not worth staying there.

I know this from first hand experience and believe me it's better to get out.

i am just bone idle, i search for jobs on the net and apply for them. When i was a few years younger i was a work crazy horseman, not a fusion of a horse and a man (forget what they are called now).Forget that. Now I have lost all my motivation, anyone with motivation ideas let the Mort know...and no i am not anything to do with anything un-religious: Instant Message, Mort, and dead because it's not really my name...Forget that too...:|
