View Full Version : The Parkway - Worst road in Britain ?

True story.......
I've just come back from my hols. Drove down to central France, did a bit of touring round there. Went over to Eurodisney for a couple of days and toured the Champagne area. Caught the Dieppe - Newhaven ferry and arrived back in UK about 1.00pm today. Came back via M25, A1(M) etc.
Got within 4 miles of home and guess what. The Parkway is being dug up again and I got stuck in the traffic at around 8:00pm tonight. The first traffic jam in over 2300 miles and 2 weeks of driving. How many times do the council need to chop and change and resurface and re-barrier and reconstruct The Parkway. It seems to be like the Forth Bridge. Just when they seem to finish it, they start from scratch again.

and for all the work they do on it, the surface is still the worst in sheffield.

The signs have been up for ages saying that the work will be carried out. You should have come off the motorway earlier (perhaps at Chesterfield and A61'd it into Sheff?)

Toot right! No need to put up speed cameras on there, if you are busting over 30mph you can be sure you won't make the end of the road! If you have ever though about going on a road tour across a third-world country, go down Carlise St. first as an initial taster of that to expect.

Don't think I've been down Carlisle St. I wasn't just referring to the road surface though. It's just that despite the fact that the Parkway must have had millions spent on it, every couple of months it has new roadworks and every weekend it has blocked off lanes and crawling traffic jams etc.

Road works are a good sign if you ask me,at least it means they are improving things. Its also my understanding that they are about to start resurfacing the carrigeway shortly.

Not if you see BT, Transco etc doing the works! Their patch-up jobs on roads are complete balls!

'Road works' - 'Improving' ........ in the same sentence?

My experience of the aftermath of roadworks is usually sunken service covers about 1 inch plus below the road surface, high ridges across the road where ditches have been amateurishly filled in or a pointless line of cones, which when moved a week or two later expose a new drain cover (higher than the road surface so the rain doesn't go down it).

Told you all so. The road ( or shall we call it 'roadworks' system) in Britain is terrible.

Traffic cone workers are on twenty-four hour rotating shifts and all holiday leave has been cancelled for the next 2000 years - such is the demand for their produce.

However, there are no traffic-cone workers in any other country in the World.

Odd, but fact.

I failed my driving test for the 2nd time due to the ****** parkway! I hate it! Thought i was coming onto the 50mph section, so I'm on my test, so I do exactly 50... indicate to come onto it, someone moves out lets me in... I get back to the center I'm thinking I've passed but NO!!!

I came on at the 70 section, failed on the fact I was going to slow joining it :( its rather stupid really, but I did have 3 minors in some other bit that would have failed me anyways... but still... I now hate the parkway...

and yes the parkway sucks for road works! but its only like the rest of sheffield, half the roads need work doing to them, and by the time it gets done, the other end of the road needs doing... lol

Next time, look out for big white signs with black lines across them. These denote the national speed limit applies, which is 70mph on a dual carriageway. I assume these signs were present? Also, 3 minors wouldn't be enough to fail.

Three minors on the same thing equals a major and that equals failure.

Yes it would but I didn't realise they were on the same thing.

This is a common misconception.

Since the driving test was changed in 1997, there is officially no limit to the number of 'minors' (or driving faults to give them their correct name) that a candidate can accumulate in one box (I've had pupils with 5 in a box and still passed).

However much of it depends on what the rest of the drive has been like and in what area the faults arise - some are obviously more serious than others and accumulating a number of marks in one box shows a deficiency in one's driving ability and the examiner may feel that it is sufficient to fail the candidate. But if the rest of the drive has been good, then he/she may take a more lenient view.

I was always told by my driving instructor that 3 minors equalled a major. Maybe it was scaremongering to make sure I didnt become slack, and if it was, it worked :D

Passed first time in June 2001 :)
