hiya all.
I decided to try and do something about the allotments and im asking if people will complain to there local councillor and to the allotment office.
If your allotment site is in quite a bit of a mess like hagg house is then i urge you to do something about it.

the problems people are having with allotments is unreal,

HAGG HOUSE ALLOTMENTS:

Where there was a CAR PARK now is a JUNGLE, the council say there have no intension of re-doing the CAR PARK and there is no parking problems on hagg hill yet!!
maybe that's because they have never had to park up there, they prob done a drive by and thought sc**w that idea.

when you get an allotment it is up to you to tidy it up and make it secure. but if you ask them for help they say ''you signed for it you clean it''

quite a few people have asked the allotment officer to get someone to come and help remove the rubbish off a site but they wont help. then you get fined for dumping it somewhere else :loopy:

apperently you can have one shed and one greenhouse on a allotment, but if like me you wanted chickens i suppose you would have to put your chickens in with your garden tools because you cannot have 2 sheds. better tell that one to the rspca lol

most of the allotments on hagg house have trees in them so you have to build around them. you can get permission to cut them back but not cut them down. but when the council feel like it they come and cut whatever trees wherever,

it costs about £25 a year for you to own an allotment and about £250 on clearing it b4 you can use it lol

my reply i got from the allotment officer about cutting a tree was, ''if you can cut it without the help from the council then its ok''

You can also buy a key for the path so you can take your car's on but you would have to have a 4x4 jeep to drive on there.

RIVERLIN ALLOTMENTS:

apparantly riverlin allotments sounds desserted because of the state there in.
They seem to have a high vandalism rating.
They dont have allotment numbers on them so if you get maps your in for a ''raiders of the lost plot'' mission.
There are too many trees so you dont get a lot of sun light for your veg :(

It's a shame to let them get any worse, maybe if we all get intouch by phone and letters/email then they might do something about it.
Because soon whoever wants to take on a allotment will have to make a path to get to there allotment. plus remove all the rubbish thats on them and thats not fair.

if you are an allotment owner or have any problems with your site please post on here and let us know about it.

i look forward to hearing from you all.

Welcome to the militant branch of Sheffield Allotments at Hagg House. We're young and angry. Well Dave's young, I'm just angry :hihi:

Dave, and others, I think we need to investigate forming an allotment association to better represent the site. Do people on other sites have associations/societies? Does this help in getting anything done with the council or at the very least improve dialogue?

I suspect it doesn't help with vandalism. Maybe we should write a letter then get lots of people to sign it? Or do people think a continuous barrage of individual letters would be a more effective method of attack:D

hiya,
i think a letter would be good becky, if we could get people on allotment sites in sheffield to sign a letter per allotment site and photo copy them, then send it in,(they should listen then hopefully). if we dont do something heavy then they prob just think we playing.
i say hit um hard!! :hihi:

your right rob, each allotment site should form a allotment association, have local meet ups to talk about problems and compliants, i say rob should be the association leader of hagg house,

im getting right into this complain to council stuff, i'll prob end up allotmentless and homeless lol:hihi:

Hi Dee and everyone...I'm fairly young and quite militant.

I've got time on my hands at the mo, being off work so I wrote an email to the allotment officer asking about Hagg Hill and their plans for any routine maintenance this year and reporting problems with the padlocks on our bit of the site

I calculate that we have spent nearing £200 on our site so far (since August) and was promised help to clear some of it because there's half a scrap yard at the bottom of my plot, but the help never turned up.

Having gone and looked at other sites just up from HH, they are much nicer, but I've had no response from the allotment office about my enquiry about them cutting trees and hedges down - basically our row could clear everything to ground level but we're still snookered if there are 40 foot trees all around the site.

I also think that it's really dangerous for us to be felling trees of this site - the bloke who has the site behind ours is doing a great slash and burn job on what's effectively a wood, but I'm a bit worried about one of us getting knocked on the head by falling timber.

I'm well up for signing stuff, going to see MP, fire bombing (only joking....) to get our point across. on the upside though, it's great we've got a plot and it may take time to bring it up to the high standards of the others. I gather from reading posts about allotments on here that there are a number of problems with the allotments officer....I also work for a council, and tend to find if someone's unhappy with a decision made, they just go to a higher level of the council, maybe it's something else we could try further down the line? Without getting ourselves into bother, an allotment association sounds great.
We should crack on with that!

sorry, forgot to say that I found a self help book on setting up an allotment society in Waterstones this week - could be useful?

I definitely think an allotments society would help us to speak with the council, being a council type!

Glad you're feeling better,

What about we write a standard letter, and then get it signed by all of us and any other allotmenteers?

I was told by Richard at the organic gardening class.

It was an AGM of something to do with the allotments, and Richard was voted on which should be good. Get in touch with him if you want more info.

Hi all,
I am Kim and I am president of the Sheffield Allotment and Leisure Gardeners Federation, we are independent of the Council and it is this committee Richard has been elected to. Our remit is to support and advise allotment holders and help to set up allot societies, we are an umberella organisation. I have set up an Alltment Fed thread and will post dates, times and locations of all future meetings please come along and get involved. Or e-mail me if you prefer. Any help we can give you are welcome to our help. I was elected 12 months ago and have spent the last 12 months getting our own house in order and have so far visited about 30 allotment sites in Sheffield I am working my way through the others now!
