Does anyone have any idea if many landlords do monthly contracts? My landlord will only extend it yearly and I'm applying for jobs all over so don't know where I'll be moving to so will need something short term. Thanks.

Id say your landlord was a shyster

6 months fixed to start with then a months notice either side is more reasonable and a lot more common too

i suggest you move, but then you will certainly be stuck for a minimum of 6 months

If you are single you may find it easier to take a room in a shared house for less time

If you are coming up to the end of your 6 month fixed term and its an assured shorthold tenancy and you say you dont want to renew .. your tenancy wouldnt automatically end you would become probably an assured shorthold periodic tenant.

The only prob if you refuse to accept a further 6 month contract the landlord could look at evicting you .. isnt a quick process would need to be given a S21 notice - min of 2 months notice, poss more and then entitled to court order & baliffs warrant so probably closer to 3 or 4 months.

Just check if the landlord served you with a S21 notice when you started your tenancy as they dont expire & he could move it quicker or if you have broken a term in your tenancy eg: rent arrears or neighbour nuisance he could evict you on grounds so it would move quicker.

Phew! Hope the above makes sense .. if you need any further advice why not call Shelter 0808 800 4444 or check out their website www.shelter.org.uk.

Good luck!
