View Full Version : Eyam walk this Sunday 3rd December
scoobz 28-11-2006, 12:54 AM Unofficial Forum walk this Sunday 3rd December around the village of Eyam. Full details of how far, and where the walk will go, are going to be decided at this Thursdays Walkers Group pub meet at the Cask and Cutler. Any input would be appreciated, either on this thread, or at the meet.
There are limited buses on a Sunday to Eyam, but there is a convenient one leaves Pond Street at 9.30 (service no 65 operated by tm travel), arriving at eyam at 10.09.
Buses return at either 15.42 or 17.12.
Bearing this in mind, a good time to meet for bus travellers and car users would be 10.15 at St Lawrences church in Eyam
purdyamos 28-11-2006, 12:58 AM If I'm not bedridden again this weekend I shall be there. I'll probably take along a sheaf of papers with the plague story and where to find old and sad things.

talking old and sad things........just look for the old sad looking fella outside the church with a map, a flat cap and bemused look on his face, and you`ll find the walk leader, haha
Grissom 29-11-2006, 12:16 AM Hey this should be a cool walk. Hoping to make it this time ! Went to Foolow as well when I went to Eyam and the buildings and well dressings were fab !
Gotta love these officially unofficial gatherings of persons belonging to the official SF walking Group :P
Trust that there will be the unofficially required mix of males to females, humans to dogs, and of course coffee shops to pubs
purdyamos 29-11-2006, 01:10 AM To be honest, Grissom, the very existence of the walking group appears to have officially become unofficial. ;)
I was hoping we could sneak a visit to the village museum to eyeball some torment and horror, and contemplate groins and necks erupting with bloody pus. I thought that was the point of our pleasant sunday morning jaunt! Unfortunately it's closed for the winter. Bah! It just means we'll have to spend longer in the warm embrace of The Miner's Arms. Sorry to disappoint you all. :D
feargal 29-11-2006, 10:31 AM Damn you all, Forum Walking Group! Why do you organise things when I can't go?!
Or is it that you are doing it on purpose :suspect:

I have fallen out with the museum, last time I went I took the kids in because they love Eyam and the gory stuff. Obviously they exclaimed gasps of wow and yuck as they read the exhibits, only for the doddery old curator to come and tell them to shut up and be quiet as its a museum and stop putting their fingers on the writing. (little one was only 7)
So they are off my list of places to go.

Quote "We do you organise things when I can`t go?!"
Well my dear, contrary to what you think, the walks aren`t organised for dates that you can`t go, they are organised to attract people who are free to meet other "free" people on weekends when they have nothing else to do! You "can`t go" because you have more social engagements than bloody Prince Charles which has restricted you to fleeting, occasional, but much-appreciatedl appearances up to now!
Hows about getting your secretary to check your 2007 diary and getting him/her to let us know any free dates for the following year, for us to arrange something that you will be able to attend?
(See you tomorrow night, lol)
feargal 29-11-2006, 02:14 PM Bless you Scubz, I shall get my people to talk to your people. :hihi:
Grissom 29-11-2006, 08:18 PM Hi
Just been having a look at the route and on the timetable valid from 04 November, the return times are 1540 and then 1855 :

Just thought I should check with you that the times in your thread are correct, as they are different from those in the timetable above

Which route does the bus take? Via Fox House, or Owler Bar, Baslow?

purdyamos 30-11-2006, 03:10 PM I've now got the Peak District timetable book. Grissom is right - the only other return bus is 18 55. I will take the book to the pub tonight, but I thought I'd confirm that on here too. The morning bus times that scubz posted are correct.
And yes, Albert, it goes via Fox House.
purdyamos 01-12-2006, 01:02 AM Slightly tipsy hello!
We've confabbed at t'pub, andf we've decided that we'll be doing another figure of eight walk with a break in the middle, going up onto the ridge first half, for threeeish miles, then looping to Stoney Middleton second half. If people only want to do the first half then hang out in the pub while we traipse round the second then meet upo again, that's cool. :)

Bambi 01-12-2006, 02:20 PM Bless you Scubz, I shall get my people to talk to your people. :hihi:
Take no notice of him Feargal, you go enjoy your mucky weekend.
purdyamos 03-12-2006, 06:50 PM What a gorgeous day! We bravely defied the severe weather warnings and were once again treated to a crisp sunny and mild day. It was windy up on the ridge, but not unbearably so.
Eyam is such an interesting place - not just because of al the plague stuff, but the little details round and about that make it distinct. It also has a nice feel to it in terms of the tourist/local balance. The views from the ridge are pretty much 360 degrees. You feel on top of the world.
We had a fantastic pot of tea and cake at the tea rooms halfway through our day, and ended it with a couple of fine pints at The Miners' Arms. It's a pity more people didn't venture out today. Even if the weather turns out bad on one of our trips, we'll just hunker down in a cafe or pub and make a day of it nonetheless. :)
The wind made my camera shake, but will these do? (http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l115/purdyamos/eyam/?action=view¤t=DSCN0786.jpg)
shoeshine 03-12-2006, 07:14 PM purdyamos, would you mind is I used your picture of the Lane (Eyam Photos)as a desktop for my PC? I would appreciate it. :)
Godzilla 03-12-2006, 07:24 PM How many of you intrepid walkers turned up for this one?
tess667 03-12-2006, 08:46 PM The wind made my camera shake, but will these do
Super photos Purdy!
Grissom 03-12-2006, 09:00 PM Not much to add to Purdy's post - it was a fab day out, pity it was just the 3 of us ! Many thanks to Scubz for the lift and Purdy for guiding us round with the map
Photos are on my site at www.rtapper.plus.com - click on the Eyam and Foolow link and look at the pics with 'new' under them :)
purdyamos 03-12-2006, 11:16 PM Wow, Grissom, you certainly had the knack with that alpaca! All those blown kisses and sweet nothings paid off! :hihi:
And as for that empty signpost on Sir William Hill - it's crying out for a Sheffield Forum official walking group unofficial walk official photography unofficial caption competition.
tess667 03-12-2006, 11:19 PM Where were the alpaccas you saw?
Grissom 03-12-2006, 11:21 PM I think I got his/her attention in the end by whispering 'pony pies !'
Whats the prize for the caption comp ¿
purdyamos 03-12-2006, 11:53 PM I think I got his/her attention in the end by whispering 'pony pies !'

If you find the road that goes up the hill with the washing and drinking troughs on, they are one or two hundred yards further up the hill.
