View Full Version : Pulling your own tooth out
bananapie 27-11-2006, 19:21 OK, I have heard about a who has bad bad toothache and just can't get a dentist appointment (not registered). So he is actually going to pull this painful tooth out himself by tying it to a doorhandle and getting someone to bang the door shut or something?!!:o
Has anyone heard of this DIY tooth pulling before??
seriessix 27-11-2006, 19:22 It's not recommended.
Jabberwocky 27-11-2006, 19:23 Is the charles Clifford thing still there? Dont they do it for free?
Is the charles Clifford thing still there? Dont they do it for free?
Do you mean that's how they still pull teeth at Charles Clifford?
Yeah, I did it for me Dad ages ago.
He tied some cotton (or fishing wire? ) round his tooth, tied the other end round the opened door's handle, and got me to boot it shut, loved it! :hihi:
Jabberwocky 27-11-2006, 19:33 Do you mean that's how they still pull teeth at Charles Clifford?
Erm.
Yeah.
:D

Apparently theres a long wait and the tooth is too painful to leave!
Ashcroft 27-11-2006, 19:35 imagine it would be painfull and prone to infections. wich tooth is it anyway?
Jabberwocky 27-11-2006, 19:35 I thought that if it was painful theyd bump him to the front of the queue. Especially if he just turns up.
Maggie1900 27-11-2006, 19:41 If the man needs a dentist that badly, get him to ring N.H.S Direct on 0845 4647 they might be able to help him, they are a 24 hour service.
Maggie.
bananapie 27-11-2006, 19:43 Apparently you just need to rub salt into the hole and gargle salt water to stop it getting infected.
Or just hang yourself and be done with it!

Not a chance, they are just not interested in dental things! He tried this and going to hospital. I think you are pretty stuck if you don't register at a dentist.
seriessix 27-11-2006, 19:48 When doing it yourself, it’s possible to damage the bone the tooth is in or leave some bits of broken root behind. It needs to be done by someone that knows what there doing.
MickeyBarnes 27-11-2006, 19:51 go on son! give it some hammer.

That was my worry too, but it's not my tooth and he's made up his mind so fingers crossed!:|
cgksheff 27-11-2006, 19:52 Most doors are too light these days.
The preferred method is to attach the tooth, by string, to an anvil which should be thrown off a moving train whilst passing over a high viaduct.

Train fares are too expensive these days. Wouldnt he be better to wait with the anvil at the side of a railway track and throw the anvil through the window of a passing choo-choo?

Trouble is that most modern train windows are of substantial safety glass which requires precise angles of impact to effect a break.
Anywhere outside this angle would effect a violent rebound. The anvil might smack him in the face and he could loose some teeth.
We wouldn't want that now.

The trains still probably cheaper than a private dentist :gag:

used to do this as a kid when i had a very wobbly tooth. i used to tie a length of string to problem tooth and then to a door handle. my friend amy would then slam the door and out it would pop. that will be £1 mrs toothfairy. bargain.
Agent Orange 28-11-2006, 09:28 Failing the train and anvil option you could always advise him about extreme tooth pulling which involves connecting a bungee to the affected tooth and throwing yourself from a high platform/tower/bridge. The only drawback is that you will continue falling once the tooth becomes detached from the gum.
my dad had same problem a couple of years ago and decided to do it himself. After failing with the pliers, he fastened fishing line around tooth and tied the other end around a dumbell and told my mum to drop the dumbell out of the bedroom window as he braced himself, when he heard the thud of the dumbell hitting ground he realised the line was obviously too long, and had to do it all again(this time with a shorter line).
Took him totally by surprise and cut his lip with the line, but it got the tooth out!:loopy:
omega1985 28-11-2006, 10:12 Extereme tooth pulling eh? Sounds awfully risky to me, he could end up with more pain and problems with his tooth than he has got now. He should be able to get in Charles Cliffords just up from Weston park. I really wouldnt advice him to do it himself :loopy:
But if he insists........
Banjo Griner 28-11-2006, 10:40 There's a telephone number to ring for emergency dentistry on the NHS. Just check out the NHS website - might be a better plan than seeking self-dentistry advice on a forum.

It could become a spectator sport, with a Saturday afternoon showing on ITV, Kent Walton doing the commentary.

I say Dickie Davis being the frontman of this amazing show!!
bananapie 28-11-2006, 19:45 Well the extreme tooth pulling was a success. It came out ok, there were a couple of bits that needed pulling out with tweezers but apparently it's not too painful. Who needs dentists eh?!

bananapie 28-11-2006, 20:01 :hihi: No lasting damage anyway!
willdervish 28-11-2006, 20:11 There are plenty of guides on the net which instruct the reader in how to remove their own teeth.
pinklady 28-11-2006, 20:19 well, has he done it yet or is he a typical bloke ... all talk but whimps out at the last minute
I must say, this thread has had me in stitches, especially the train scenario
Jabberwocky 28-11-2006, 20:21 I think we should all devise an extreme method of pulling a tooth (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/Doppler1/dentist-examination.jpg), then film it for the forum.

Indeed, they could be all compiled onto a DVD with an introduction and links made by a guest presenter (preferably Sean Bean). The disc could be sold for 20 quid with all proceeds put towards funding a community dental surgery, that will be housed in a squat in Rotherham.
charles clifford did it for me free and i got in next day

Remove the word "For" and Im game!
I just did a DIY appendectomy on myself. Does anyone know how to do a surgeons knot?
Surely it can't be that expensive to have it done private at a dentist, if indeed it does need extracting? I'm afraid if it was me I'd pay whatever to get rid of the pain instead of asking advice on here!
Banjo Griner 29-11-2006, 10:04 Yeah... sometimes the threads on here beggar belief - it won't be long before the first 'There's a burglar in the house, what should I do?' thread.

You have never eaten salt and vinegar crisps when you’ve had an mouth ulcer or you wouldn’t have even made your suggestion.
Salt in an open wound: -

Thought I may chop off my ears tonight, anybody got any advice on how to do this?

I'm not sure about this. After I had tooth taken out (by a dentist :hihi: ) I was told to rinse my mouth with salt water. It was stingy at first but that's all.

You may mock but it's not that long ago that you would have gone to your local barber to have teeth taken out with rusty pliers and been grateful!!
The DIY extraction actually seems to have gone OK and he's not in pain or anything.

And in 2006 you go to your local internet forum for advice on Victorian methods of self-dentistry? Nah, I'll make use of what's left of the NHS thanks - like I said, there's an emergency number for getting teeth pulled out.
My dad pulled out one of his own teeth using fishing line tied to a door. Came out OK.
bobsyouruncle 30-11-2006, 16:50 I had a really bad tooth, a month ago, so I went to Charles Clifford, where they train all the dental students, there wasnt too much pain, but finally they managed to get the right one out.
