I keep getting this (http://www.free-inbox.co.uk/iefault1.gif) window pop up EVERYTIME I open up IE 6.
This only started last night.

If I click 'Send Error Report' the browser closes down, if I click 'Don't Send' the browser closes down.

No matter what I use the browser closes down.

The 'To see what data this error report shows' link brings up this (http://www.free-inbox.co.uk/iefault2.gif) which means nothing to me.

I have even had to download Mozilla Firefox to use as a browser but it just wont cut it. It basically doesn't work correctly (misses links from websites and doesn't finish forwarding through scripted web pages etc)

Help ANYONE?

I assume you have tried the usual virus update and scan, etc?

Otherwise, take a look in the system log. On XP, go to start, settings control panel, administrative tools, event viewer

Then look in Application or System, see if there are any relevant Errors (not all errors are actually anything to worry about). Double click on them and read the description, see if that helps.

Feel free to PM me what it says when you click 'view technical information' on your second image.

Are you using SP2? (...I'm assuming XP here...)

...and try Firefox again. Use it for a week (have IE there to fall back when sites dont work, there are really not many) and I guarantee you'll not go back :)

I'm using SP1 at the moment - should I dl SP2?

Some people have reported slow systems after installing SP2, so I'm a bit reluctant.

I've been using it for weeks without a single problem, but there's always a risk. Backup everything you can't live without and go for it. I am positive it will sort your problem out because it installs a new version of IE.

Run a full virus check first though, avtapi88.exe sounds quite dodgy to me.

In fact, try control-alt-delete, processes, then see if avtapi88.exe is running and kill it if it is. See if IE works then.

Some people have CTRL/ALT/DEL as the Logon Information (so you obviously hit Task Manager) most have it going straight to Tsk. Mgr. (If you want to know how much CPU is being used, then you can minimize it to the sys tray)

Once inside Task manager you can make a note of any dodgy looking processes (make sure you copy them exactly!), and then go to the site below to check them out.

Have you tried repairing IE in add remove programs?

Its the web pages that are at fault; Firefox renders things as they should be - it is IE that isn't obeying the rules!

Well the opening page (home page) for IE is Google.
It just shuts down when I open it.

try this experiment - open my computer and where it says Address: My Computer at the top (if you don't see it, go to view, toolbars, address bar) and type in a web address there (try google.co.uk). see if that works.

Feel free to lock this thread if required.
Decided to use Opera v7.4 and it's [censored word] brilliant.

Better than IE, better than Mozilla - this thing rocks!

Phan - I started using it on your advice.... THANK YOU DUDE!
