I lived in Hackenthorpe from 1975 to 1986. To be honest it was much better than the place I lived in before (Arbourthorne).

There was some gorgeous girls too from Hackenthorpe, I married one!

Delves Road is between the bus terminus and the gennel or pathway that leads up to Main Street.

Alas, I wasn't called Sam Miguel in those days, just plain old Michael Simmonite.

Spent quite a lot of my younger years there. I went to the old village school in the 50's and can remember the blacksmith's shop next to the post office in main street.
Was in the first group of kids to attend Birley Spa Junior's and then finished up at Carter Lodge. Lived on Cotleigh Way and later on Birley Spa lane. Can anyone remember Cotleigh Hall on the Main st. ? We used to play in the ruins after school and were lucky not to come a cropper climbing up to the roof.

I went to the village school in the 50s, then moved to St John Fisher's.

Remember well the post office and it's YZ chewing gum machine, Spencer's farm (he delivered our milk in his green Fordson van).

Do you remember the story going round about the fields behind the school being haunted by fighting soldiers?

Lived on Birley Spa Lane - no. 232 - then.

I was at the school when the Coronation was on in '53 and do remember Spencer's farm opposite. I think one of the son's was in my class. Was only there a short time. The storey about the ghost soldiers rings a bell somewhere!

My name is Maurice Copeland and currently living in NSW Australia.

I have some very fond memories of Hackenthorpe.

Parents left New Parsons Cross on the other side of Sheffield and took me and my two brothers to live in Rainbow Avenue - actually, at the intersection with Carr Forge Road.

We had a terrific time in winter sleding down Rainbow Avenue from Birley Spa Lane. We also used to play on the slag heaps not too far away at the back of the Avenue and muck around, getting well and truly black. Occasionally we'd walk beside the sewerage ponds, down towards 'Coisly Hill?'.

I remember making friends with a girl called Sandra who lived a few doors up on the upper slope towards Birley Spa Lane. We went on a few excursions if my memory serves me well.

Went to Carter Lodge Secondary from around 1957 to 1960 and during this time we did another house shift, this time to Delves Close. I remember very clearly having a fist-fight, one which I lost, with a friend called Tony ?? - he also lived in the Close. A school mate called John Stafford and I were close friends. He lived in Birley Spa Lane.

Stayed there for a couple of years then parents up'd and went to live at Newstead Road, Birley Moor.

I worked for Martins Dry Cleaners, Fitzallan Square for a few years as machine operator. In 1967, the adventurous spirit took over and I headed off for a new life in Melbourne, Australia.

If anyone knows me and would like to make contact, my email address domino_1945@hotmail.com

Johnny Stafford lived next door to us in the mid-to-late 50's on Birley Spa Lane. I remember the family's black Truimph Mayflower car parked up in the front garden/drive. I was 4-10 years old when I lived there.

The Derwents live at the other side. Michael was my best mate.

Don't think this is the girl I dated. She lived about three-five doors down from the Pub near the bus terminus (Pub side).

Where you are talking about, a little further up towards Birley, I dated a girl called Barbara Snowden - she lived on a street off Birley Spa Lane, can't remember the name. Now, she was drop-dead gorgeous!!

I revisited England in 1972 and saw her working at the local butchery in Birley Spa Lane. At the time decided it wasn't appropriate to chat with her as I'd arrived in England with a newly wedded wife.

I lived on Birley spa lane from 1970 to 1976, then at hackenthorpe social club from 1976-1978. went to birley spa infants and juniors, and then after moving back to Beighton, having been born there, went to carter lodge school, leaving 6th form in 1987.

my dad's cousin Gary is the gary mentioned in the OP, my grandmother still lives on dyke vale road.

my favourite hackenthorpe memory was renshaw's shop, just up the road from carter lodge school, spent many a lunchtime eating pot noodles from there with a buttered breadcake.

Well we lived there from 1980 till 1987, my dad, Vin, was the caretaker at Rainbow Forge on Birley Spa Lane. My Grandparents, Piggotts, lived on Delves Drive, behind the bus terminus, and my youngest uncle still does, as far as I'm aware. Grandad John Piggott also did a few years on the door of the club.

One of my aunts lived up near the 'top-shops' and the club, Carter Knowle (?), her inlaws, the Wiles, lived opposite us on Birley Spa Lane. My Nan had a cousin and his wife, the Mckevoys, who also lived in Hackenthorpe.

I went to Rainbow Forge and then Carter Lodge, that both schools now dont exist is a bit unnerving.

I lived at 68 Newstead Way Hackenthorpe from 71-74 with the Parker family having moved from Park Hill flats. My time spent with my sis and brother in law was brilliant and I remember loads of good people from that area at that time. Most weekends were spent up the Frecheville and Birley Moor pub and the one opposite which became part of a golf club the Fairway I think it was called.
I joined the Royal Navy from there in 73 and we had a leaving do at the Manor House down the road can't remember the name of it if anybody can help Lord of the Manor for the evening and all that.
Went out with several girls from Hackenthorpe all of whom I have fond memories of.
Long walks to the Harrow pub which had a disco type thing going in the 70's and even longer walks down to the Forge where Roger Moffat used to drink.
By the way at my wedding in 78 he sent a personalised Radio Hallam message to all our family as my sis used to get him ****** in the Bluebell before and after he went on air, I think it then became Crazy Daisy's or something like that.
Great site this, living in a new town Basildon Essex they don't have things like this to talk about.

Best wishes to all in Hackenthorpe

Hi all,
I teach in Hackenthorpe, in the new Rainbow Forge Primary School (in the old Carter Lodge building).
My class will be studying the local area as part of our geography and history work, and I was wondering if anyone has any old photos of Hackenthorpe, Rainbow Forge (old or new) or Carter Lodge that I could use.
I've enjoyed reading this thread and finding out what Hackenthorpe was like in days gone by... certainly more interesting than any history book!
Any help much appreciated!

Yes I was from Hackenthorpe untill 1964 I can remember many of the kids I grew up with. I lived at 33 Delves Drive and the kids I hung around with were Peter Townsend, Gerald Smith, Tony Maikinson, Peter White Linda Havenhand, Magerat & Lynda Bailis the Disney family (the dad was the local Police Man) I can vaguely remember the Piggot family and also the Simonite family.
I spent my early years at the village School then to Rainbow Forge School, the teachers I remember were Miss Cantor the Head, Mrs Box. Mr Taylor and Mr Macike.
I now live in Inverness Scotland it would be great to hear from Hackenthorpe

Me too. I was riding my bike on the pavement in front of Gower & Burgins shop at the terminus. He spots me and says, why are you riding your bike on the pavement>? I says, "it's safer than the road".

I once found 2/6 at a bus stop on Birley Spa Lane on my way home from school. I told my mum that 'Walt' had given it to me for fixing his cycle lamp. A few days earlier my dad had explained to me that torch batteries needed to be connected up + to - or they wouldn't work, so I remembered this and told him that this was the reason why I got 'Walt's' light working.

He said that he'd keep an eye open and thank 'Walt' for his generosity the next time he rode past. I was pooing myself for weeks, hoping that my dad didn't see him. Nothing came of it, thank God.:)

Another Disney story:

Autumn 1966

Me and my mate Paul decide to have a fire as It was winter. So we got loads of newspapers and all sorts of packaging, stuffed it into some carrier bags and went off to find somewhere to get one going. Oh yes, I took a bottle of turps just in case we had trouble lighting it :) .

We went up onto the football field on Drakehouse Lane and decided to get one going on the other side of the changing hut were we wouldnt be seen. (There was no houses or Crystal Peaks there then).
It was covered in some corrugated sheets and the flames were lapping up it nicely. As the flames began to die out I thought I'd chuck the turps on to bring it back to life. :hihi:

Well the flames leapt 15 feet into the air under the corugated sheet and set the hut on fire. As we stood there stunned who should be stood right behind us but Disney. Me and my mate legged it and left the old git standing. We run over the fields to Beighton and went back to Hackenthorpe in a big circle.

Some hours later we both went home and as I went through the front door my dad was stood behind it. Where've you been he said? playing cards at my mates, I says.

No you haven't you lying little bl**der, you and your pal have burnt the bloody football changing rooms to the ground havent you. I thought to myself - - just before the first blow hit me. How did he know it was me and my mate.

It turns out along with the newspapers, I had taken some old birthday cards and envelopes with my address on and Disney had fished them out of the fire.

While we were slapping each other on the back thinking we had got away with it. He had got on his bike and gone down to our house and told me dad. He said he'd thought he'd caught Harry Roberts as there was a nationwide manhunt on at the time looking for him. He'd seen the smoke and put 2 and 2 together and come with 5:hihi:

Anyway you can thank me for the new changing hut. I paid for it in skin ,flayed off my backside.

Sean, I never knew your family from Hackenthorpe but I knew them from your dads next school in South West Sheffield. I will send you a PM. It would be nice to make contact again.

Hi Lostrider,

Your knowledge of Hackenthorpe seams to be good, as regards ChrisCrossley as a member of the area I new him in the early 70's he was the resident DJ at Cinderolles/ Rockofellers leeds and as a DJ I am well aware of Chris and his nickname the Mighty Atom because of his size. He is a great Guy and has taken his situation and proved to all that it is the individual that matters, not the apperance. I take my hat of to him and have a great deal of respect for him.
I have seen your Disney stories and it does reflect the Gentleman even as a Police Officer we all new our place.
May I ask what year and location you lived in Hackenthorpe so that I might be able to place you, maybee we have met.

Regards Dave:confused:

If you knew Gerald Smith you should be able to find him on this photo: can you put names to any of the others? I'll see if I can make a list.

Free at Last (http://www.aburke.freeuk.com/images/carter.jpg)
I think he is stood behind me to the right of the picture, with his hand on my shoulder.

We moved to Hackenthorpe in 1954 when I was one year old. Lived on Delves Avenue. Moved away in 1975 when I got married. My dad was a copper, but with the Sheffield City Police. I had a mate on Delves Drive - Peter Brown.

Yes Gerald Smith is on the far right at the back row, either centre front row, or left front row looks like Tony Maikinson but not sure, where did you get the photo and is it at Carter Lodge. I thought that Gerald passed his 11+ as all that failed from Rainbow Forge went to Carter Lodge instead of the Grammer school.

Thanks for the photo, please let me know when you have more names

I dont know for sure if it's the same Havenhands but it possibly was. Did Linda have red hair as Andrew did?
I went to school with Elaine and Rita Townsend, Rita was my age, Elaine a little older. They lived on Delves Drive next the the Darcy's and Hambletons I think.
I dont know the Maikinsons.
I went to School with Stuart White or Wiley as he was nicknamed. He had an older Brother called Dave and a couple of sisters. They lived on Rainbow Avenue.

Hope this rings a few bells. I'll see if I can dig a few more photos out for you.

Tazz, no not linked to Woodcraft. Only in that they held it at Rainbow Forge, where my Dad was caretaker of the school, in the 80s, but he didnt have anything to do with the meetings.

OK, must be another family I'm thinking off :( . No relation to Derek Piggott then who lived in Delves Drive?

Hi Lostrider,
Linda Havenhand did indeed have red hair,I new Rita andand Elain Townsnsend, but it was their brother Peter who was my age the same as gerald Smith. Yo mention the Hambletons @ 33 Delves Drive. My parents bought their house @ 2 Marchwood Road Stannington, and they through what I can rememberer under the deal transfered to our house. This was 1963 then in 1965 we moved to Woodhouse. My aunt used to live on Dyke vale Road no 19 named Binghams, and I can remember Peter Nolan and the Hempshals who used to live next door.

Going back to Delves Drive there was also the Ballis family Linda and Margeret and I think it was the Piggots next door to Gerald Smiths house or was it the Baxandales, it was 43 years ago. I can remember the gales that blew down the tree in the centre of Delves Drive before they built the Garages. 10 years ago I had a guy work for me by the name of Mick Smith wno used to live on Delves Road we became good friends sadly he died 2 years ago he srved his tim in the pit as a sparky I think it was Orgreave not sure.
Sorry I digress Living in Inverness now I still have a soft spot for Hackenthorpe.

As regards Miss Cantor yes I can remember the Friday club, but I can only remembe Miss Box, Mr Taylor and Mr McKaie

Thanks for the memories please keep them comming.

Vaguely.

Wasn't there a row of prefab garages behind them, down that lane that is now the main road leading to Crystal Peaks (Mossway)?

Yes I remember them, Something Row it was called. Used to be a strange old bloke lived on there who used to fish in the road, never had the electric on always candles burning in the windows. Maybe they didn't have any "electrickery".
Is anyone old to enough to remember when the Hogshead was a big hole in the ground.
Used to ride my three wheeler bike in out of it, we used to think a bomb had gone off in it. What about Harry Hogshead and is two daughters who each had a Mini. No one on our road even had a car. One or two had Motorbikes and Sidecars (Panthers). My dad had a Raleigh Runabout Moped. Proper ashamed I was. One of the neighhbours had a van with "Grays Office Supplies" on the side. For everyone else it was "Shank's Pony". Nowadays you cant get on the street for cars. Some on the road, some on the grass the rest on the pavement. Thank God I dont live there anymore.

My dad had a maroon Royal Enfield and black sidecar when we lived there, '54-'60 ish. I felt a right prat in the sidecar, and not very safe. :( Next door neighbours - the Staffords - had a black Triumph Mayflower (posh buggers), and the bloke who delivered the milk - Farmer Spencer - had a dark green Ford E83W van. They are the only vehicles I remember from my time there.

I could play with my Dinky cars in the middle of Birley Spa Lane for hours, and probably only have to shift to let the 41 bus pass and maybe half a dozen cars - on a busy day.

If your Dad used to drink in the Plover he will remember my Uncle Earnest Bingham, and the Fishing club. Earnest used to live at 19 Dyke Vale Road and latterly was the secretery of the Hackenthorp social Club at the end of main street. He later moved to Drakehouse Lane. I would be interested if your Mum and Dad can remember

Hi,

I have read this thread with a lot of interest and recognise a few of the names from my time at Carter Lodge. I lived on Carr Forge Close from 1958 until I left Sheffield to join the Army in 1968, my father was the care taker at Rainbow forge until about 1970, his name was Steve Glossop. I knew David Payne, Rita Townsend but used to knock about with John Gilliver, Kev Butcher, John Cockayne, Robin Leake, Ian Burkinshaw, Neil Burgess "Birdie", Billy Brown, Pete Jackson, Jimmy Simpson etc, don't remember many of the lasses, Jean Cotham springs to mind, Barbara Starkey, Linda Grey. My name is Baz Glossop so if any one knows or remembers me say hello. My sister Pat still lives on Hackenthorpe as does my Brother Raymond.

I lived in Hackenthorpe from 1955 to 1974 when I moved to the Midlands and married a chap from down here. Back then it was like an island with green fields all around it and you were never far away from being out of everyone's view.

I went to Rainbow Forge Infants, then Junior School (now no longer with us of course but houses there) and then Thornbridge, which later amalgamated with Birley Senior School. This was before the "Village" had new developments built there and it had really old shops opposite the 2 pubs that were there.

It seems everyone who has posted something enjoyed living there so that can't be bad.

Moved from Hackenthorpe to Loxley when I got married then left Sheffield to live in Africa for several years before returning to the UK and eventually settling in Essex.
Still think of Sheffield as home though and have some lovely memories of Hackenthorpe.
Playing with the Downend, Spotswood and O'Connor children in the fields off Rainbow Avenue. Climbing and falling out of trees just off the fields. Mum clipping me all the way home, after looking for and finding us stuck in the footings of the new houses still being built further down the Avenue.
Ah, happy innocent days. Days when we had respect/fear ;) for the teachers and police.

Yes, sorry I did think that. I did live next door to the O'connors, and went to St John Fisher school on Springwater Ave.
We moved onto Birley from there, do you remember the poppy field on Occupation Lane before the estate was built?

I do remember the poppy field on Occupation Lane, it was lovely when in full bloom.
I actually drove up and had a look at Rainbow Avenue several years ago, after not seeing it since the 70's. I was with my husband, two sons and one of my daughters in law. We had travelled up there for my mum's funeral.
What surprised me, were the big trees/lumpy ground on the green in front of our old houses. It used to be a nice flat green. As a children, we used to play on there, doing handstands, cartwheels and too many games to mention. We never caused trouble and were polite to people. We'd have got a clip from our parents had we been rude or caused trouble.
What sadness it is that it's not like that today.

30-01-2009, 09:32
Oh, and the hopscotch we used to play round the edge of the green, drawn with chalk (not spray paint:rolleyes::mad:) that used to wash off as soon as it rained.

Oh well, off to do the supermarket shopping...how I HATE that!

We used to live in Hackenthorpe,on Carr Forge Close, from the late sixties until 1974, when we moved to Canada. Since then we have been living in London, Ontario.

My name is Hazel Khan and two of my children used to go to Rainbow Forge Infants school. What a great school that was.

I wonder if anyone remembers my family? I would love to hear from Marlene, who was my next door neighbour. She had two boys, John and Mark. Can't quite remember their surname, it might have been Higgins. They had a little jack russel terrier called Bandit. Does anyone know them?

Hi there,
I lived on Carr Forge Close form 1968 until 1989ish though my family lived there long before. I was at number 8, right next door to Pat Glossop, next door but one to Marrleen Harrison and next door but 3 to the Khans I think. I was friends with Sarah Khan. Had a fantastic time in Hackenthorpe. I think I remember the Piggotts by name but not face. Went to Rainbow Forge Infants and Carter Lodge Secondary-left there I think in 1985/6. Sister Julie and two brothers Bill/William and Alan. Sadly mum Connie died in 1976 when I was 7, dad also William died 2005 (bless him!) and Alan died age 53 in 2008. Feel like all my childhooh memories are in Hackenthorpe so if anybody wants to get in touch email- tracey2@mindless.com

Can anyone remember Mad Tony- cant think of street he lived on. Liked fires and would run for 10 miles to see one. Also the Lee family? Strange!!!

By the way, I used to share my birthday cake with Sarah when I was at Rainbow Forge. If it was your birthday, you would get a cake. Could choose 1 friend to share it with, plus all the teachers in the staff room. I always chose Sarah. I remember she was a bit older than me though. I was gutted when you lot moved to Canada. I think we fought a lot though. Vaguely remember my mum storming round demanding that she be my friend when we fell out once! Wow! Can't beleive you are on here. Please fill in any gaps.

Hi Tracy,

Small world now isn't it. I do remember you and your family. Someone told me about your mother's death. I was so sorry as you were so young then. I found the Sheffield Forum quite by accident. It brings back lots of memories. We came to London, Ontario straight from Sheffield and have lived here ever since.
Syd and I have just celebrated our 44th wedding aniversary. Syd is now retired from General Motors but I am still working. I went to college here and became an Accountant.

Sarah went into teaching and is now a High School Principal. I will tell her about the Forum and your message.

I do visited Sheffield quite often as my parents and my younger sister still live there.

Empty bottles to Hogshead pub for deposit back, quick look in bike shop window, penny's worth of YZ (the one with the owl on) gum from machine on post office wall, then watch Farmer Spencer (who owned the green Ford Thames van bring his cows in ... before heading off down the fields (which were reputedly haunted) behind the village school for a spot of spider hunting.

You have recalled memories of PC Walt Disney I used to live on Delves Drive and he lived on Delves road towards the bend on the left hand side, to the right was the stairs goinig down to the main road and then up to Rainbow Forge School.
The Fields behind the Village school I can remember as it was yesterday we used to take jam sarnies and a pop bottle full of tap water and spend the day there.
Before the Pub (and I can not remeber the name at the side of the post office/sweet shop) becam a vets at the side I can always remember Mr. Disney catching me and a few freinds scromping apples, he asked where do you live and if I catch you again I will go and speak to your Dad.
That was enough to stop us. In that time we respected the Police and those older than we were.
To me those days were one of respect for all people, today I would not like to be a child, not only are children disrespectfull, but the older people have an atitude.

I remember Disney living in the left hand Police House in the village just opposite the Gospel Hall. PC Spears lived in the right hand one. I used to play with PC Spears son, I think they called him Mick, maybe it was Charles, as we were both "coppers kids". When Hackenthorpe was absorbed by Sheffield, PC Spears stayed with the Derbyshire force and Disney transferred to Sheffield Police.

Hi Lostrider thanks for the name of the Pub I to went to the Village School in 1955/56 before I went to Rainbow Forge. I can remember the shed, but it was the Post Office I remember with the Flying Saucers, Sherbet dipps,Rainbow Crystals, Imps, Black Jacks and Fruit Salads to name but a few.
As my Birthday was July 24 there was only 1 year at the school that I had the chance to have the head miss to let me have sweets out of the box in her study.
The names that spring to mind at 4/5 years old are Peter White and Tony Mackinson.
Those were happy days we had not a care in the world we we left to be children.

One of the amazing thing's I remember is my mum taking to me to the infants school aged 5 years old, just to show me where it was for the first week and then I went on my own with the other kids off our road. All the way from Delves Avenue, past the waste ground where the Hogs Head would be built, up Church Lane past the old folks flats and the cottages. Then past the button factory and The Scotts Pines around Memmots. Along Sheffield Road past the Sycle Works over Main Street to where Mrs Phipps the lollipop lady would take us safely across the road to school. Imagine that today!

When we moved to Hackenthorpe into a newly built house in 1953 there wasn't a place for me to attend school in the village so mum would walk me up from the bottom of the estate all the way up to the top to catch a "charabanc" which took us all the way out to Ridgeway.
The first school I went to was in the church rooms down a lane at the side of Ridgeway Church, it had a pot bellied stove in the middle of the room which we all sat around, we actually had slate & chalk when I first went there!
The second school I attended was in the Methodist Church on the main Ridgeway Road, there was no playground so, after school dinners we were taken for walks down the long hill into Ford bottom.
I finally got to go to a proper school which was Ridgeway Infants School but, only for a short time as we were then transferred to Beighton Infants School where we were taught in "Portacabins".
Very often the charabanc got stuck in snow drifts, one year it ran off the road on High Lane and finished up in the field stuck in snow, mums were anxiously waiting in Hackenthorpe when we arrived home several hours late not knowing what had happened to us as no-one had a telephone.
All this took place from being aged 5-8, could you imagine parents of today tolerating their off-spring being ferried around from school to school.
Mum didn't like the lack of amenities in Hackenthorpe so we moved to Meersbrook when I was 8.

Anyone here lived on Carter Lodge Avenue from the mid 50's? I'm sure my dad (Robert Green) lived there from birth in 1950, of not his family moved there soon after as my uncle (Richard Green) was born in the house. There was also a sister (Wendy)

Not sure of the number (though 14 rings a bell) but it was at the opposite end to the junction with the main road (one with the shops on).

Sure they all would have attended Rainbow Forge too, I also remember my dad talking about a friend called Brian Humyard (think he lived on the main road on the left, down the hill from the shops just as it turns right).

I think when Ranbow Forge was replaced with houses Pigs Lane was lost.

It most certainly is still there. You can just see it on Google Earth.

In the old days it was used for carrying blades on wagons pulled by donkeys, from the grinding wheels at shirebrook to the factories on Main Street.

I remember Pig's Lane, we used to walk up and down it to and from school. I left Rainbow Forge in about 1980 to go to Carter Lodge. I loved Rainbow Forge and was in Mr Vernon's class. He used to inflate pig's bladders and display them on the wall like they were a work of art. The school would be closed down today on health and safety grounds. Pig's lane was so magical. It had a little stream of water running down it from what I can remember. Oh sweet memories.

We used to play up Pigs Lane in the 60's, there was a bank on the left hand side that gave us acces to Rainbow Forge school fields, we'd get thru the fence and then scrump a few pears from the back of the school, then sit at the top of the bank, seem to remember running down it and up the opposite bank. My mother was a cleaner at Rainbow and after work one evening came up Pigs Lane to bring me home, we were with a couple of lasses on the bank and fields and for some reason thought we were "manking" as she put it, maybe we were but they were fun days back then.

I think David is a tatooist, and of course everyone remembers Sam, he used to hang around with our group. Always good for a laugh he didnt half get up to some stunts. He would do anything you dared him to do. If anybody made any remarks about Sam while he was with us, they got a good kicking. Any idea what happened to Sam, I haven't seen him for over 35 years.

When I went to the Village School, ..... Just at the entrance to the Village School next to the telephone box was a liitle shed where an old guy used to sell sweets. When ever I see a sherbet "Flying Saucer" it always reminds me of that sweet shop (Hut).

If I remember rightly that hut was run by the father of the guy who opened Elam's on Birley Spa Lane when those shops were built.

I remember the little kiosk because we used to buy small bottles of Tizer or Dandelion & Burdock after we had been playing i.e. (lighting fires/catapulting butterflies/catching grashoppers) in Bluebell Wood.

Bluebell Wood, I remember us making a rope swing from a tree, a really high one. Any way, rope broke and I ended up in the brambles below, landing on an old tin buried deep in the brambles.
It was one of those big catering cans, must have been there for years. It was all rusty with no label on and unopened.
Out came the trusty army knife, one of those with a big metal point for getting stones out of horses hooves. :hihi: It turned out to be a big tin of baked beans in perfect condition. Did we think about food poisoning, salmonella, yes for about half a second then we all stuck our hands in ate the whole tin. :gag:
It never did us any harm anyway, well apart from the trouser burps. :hihi:

I went to the village school in the 50s, then moved to St John Fisher's.

Remember well the post office and it's YZ chewing gum machine, Spencer's farm (he delivered our milk in his green Fordson van).

Do you remember the story going round about the fields behind the school being haunted by fighting soldiers?

Lived on Birley Spa Lane - no. 232 - then.

Lived at 236 Birley Spa Lane in the 60's. Pages lived at 232 then. Staffords at 234. My mate Mick Darwent live at number 230, I think his parents still live there. I went to the village school as well, then Rainbow Forge then Thornbridge. Small world.

The Rat !!! Mick Darwent told me I was his best mate. We went everywhere together, went to Skeggy on my motorbike and sidecar, went camping at Foxhouse, played football and cricket on Carter Lodge playing fields. We lived on the other side of the Staffords from about 1955 until about 1967. I won't say who I think you are but did you have a sister called Heather? To Le Baron - Jean Cottam (as was) here.

I remember you and some of the names you have mentioned i.e. John Cockayne, David Payne, Kev Butcher, Ian Burkinshaw, Neil Burgess.
There was also a lad called Constantine and I remember we were called Cotty, Cocky and Connie. I remember your Dad being the caretaker at Rainbow Forge and hanging around on the playgroud at the bottom of my garden. I lived at 45 Delves Road next door to the Glovers (daughter Bonita).
I moved to Hackenthorpe around 1964, during the last year at junior school and stayed to almost the end of the 1st year at Carter Lodge.
I loved it and thought we'd moved to the country after living at Walkley and I definitely didn't want to move when we left to go to Norfolk Park.
I also remember, Maureen Teesdale (sure I saw her working in Asda years ago), Janice Foulstone, Jenny Crapper (think she worked at Freemans for a while when I was there), Wendy Blackwell and Vivienne Atkinson. I have fond memories of playing in the corn fields, crossing the sewage to Beighton and scrumping apples in the orchard next to Bluebell Woods. Memories!

I also have a message for Lizzie dripping. I married a guy called Dave Deakin who worked at Keetons with Ernest Oxley as electricians. He remembers your husband and Ken & Fred though Dave was one of the younger lads there and he left before they embarked on their mamouth strike. We used to go on the GKN trips to Wales (don't know if you ever did) and remembers Stan Rhodes, Stan Bricklebank, Pete Young, Billy Waller, Sam Ford (our Brother in Law).

Hi Le Baron

Oh God, I loved singing (still do, can't get me off a kareoke). Would you believe a day or two after posting my message I recognised a woman in Argos and it turned out to be Kathy (can't remember her second name) had deaf parents and we used to sing Kathy's Clown to the lad she was going out with. She remembered me and I told her about this site so she may log on one day. Remember going 'down Cams' and singing about it to Down Town.
Still got the scar on my leg where I got stuck on barbed wire when we were scrumping apples in the orchard near Bluebell Woods.
I do'nt recognise the name of the lad who passed away but it's always scary when you hear of people our age dying so young.
Have a great Christmas (looks like it could be a white one) and a prosperous New Year (could do with a lottery win!).

Hi Buddysbuddy,
I worked for Harry Elam for a number of years, when he had the little hut on Birley Spa Lane, just above where the shops are now, and also after he moved into the new shop. Remember Mrs. Elam and her parents Mr & Mrs. Thompson, and of course Harry's brother Tom, who ran the shop at the top of Gleadless Road? I also went out canvassing for him, but on the Gleadless Valley Estate along with Dave Smalley of Cotleigh Drive. Then of course there was Miles Cooper who worked in the shop for Harry (bit of a pratt). I used to deliver about 144 'Stars' every night and I also collected paper money for Harry on Sundays. Good days eh? My name is Tom Porter amd I lived on Springwater Drive

Does anyone remember Miss Russell (1967-1969) or Mrs Lickorish (1971-1973)The Head Teacher was Mrs Hardwick and I would love to get back in touch with her. I believe that she left the Sheffield area and possibly remarried. I kept in touch with Mrs Proctor and Mrs Grey, both of whom died.

I was in the reception class at the village school 10 years earlier.During assembly I remember the head, Mrs Bulter telling all the kids to get there hankies out and wave them in the air to show you had one. One morning i hadn't got mine, but I had bought a bag of sweets from the tuck shop hut near the telephone box at the entrance, so I waved a paper bag in the air. I got away with it that time.

It's funny the things that you remeber. :)

My name is Tom Porter amd I lived on Springwater Drive

hi earlybird8 you must have worked for harry after i left to start work proper about 1956/57. i lived on spa view drive. i also knew dave smalley, the last i saw of him was when he was in the army. i dont suppose you know where he finished up do you?
