dylan_61 03-09-2004, 14:37 You can't miss "The Last Judgement"
Classic Rock 03-09-2004, 15:27 Don't plan, just go with the flow, there's so much to see and do in Rome you'll just happen upon places. Everything is VERY expensive though, so be careful.
commie pig 03-09-2004, 16:07 i didn't think it was that expensive at all! (went in june/july) - very pleasantly surprised in fact.
most of the trattoria's will do you a nice and decent meal for a reasonable price - not the posh nosh you get in italian restaurants over here, plainer but still tres delicious. good cheap wine too.
bars...well just hang around in the centre, tbh they pretty much seemed much of a muchness to me, so amble round till you find one that looks good to you/has attractive young ladies already in it!
stuff to do...man there's sooo much - the old forum was just utterly totally gobsmackingly brilliant in my book vatican galleries pretty neat. if you like the arty stuff there are loads of churches you can just walk into and see some amazing carravagio's (and others but mr C was the man who made it for us) do the obvious stuff, there are bloody good reasons why it is obvious - cos its amazing! a stroll down the appian way (where all the slaves got strung up at the end of spartacus) is gorgeous, and there are some really neat crypts round there. the keats/shelley house is nice, the gardens in the north that i cant remember the name of a great place to chill out for an afternoon.
i cant remember the names of the really good pizza places we went to 9they were REALLY good) - one claims to be the oldest one in the world, so it'll be in any tourist guide, the others just down the road from it, i'll try n l;ook em up tonight and post the names.
and mind your bags! esopecially on the 63 bus Bus station to vatican one)
Draggletail 03-09-2004, 16:30 We went years ago. Nice city, busy, can't cross the roads without risk of loss of life. On the last night we bought pizza from a 'vendor' Got such bad food poisening we almost didn't make the bus back to the UK:gag:
Yes, we really did do it on a bus. 36 hours...
Nice place, though. enjoy your stay, beware food vendors :D
bulldog D 03-09-2004, 21:39 Rome is one of the most cost effective places we go to. Why not eat like the Italians and keep it cheap!
I recommend a superb little deli just off the Trevi Piazza/fountain area, buy the basic bits go and sit by the Trevi and munch.
It's the best picnic in the world and don't forget to throw a few coins in the fountain.
And just be prepared to have your breath taken away by the place, the Basilica will leave you in awe, especially if you go upstairs!
We tend to stay outside Rome in a Villa over looking Lake Gondolfo, around this time of year you will find it magnificent, the weather will be warm but manageable, the nights dry and entertaining especially if shared with friends.
Have a look at the fashion shops around the periphery of the city and you'll find some real affordable bargains.
Bear in mind that Rome is the only european capitol that you can navigate by foot in a day providing you don't want to spend an eternity at every stop.
BEWARE the Roman Centurions around the COLLOSEO(Colloseum)
there mainly eastern european and charge you for having their photo taken,The street handbag sellers, fake Fendi,Burburry etc
and the crap souvenir sellers, fridge magnets etc also the jewellery sellers cheap plated crap to get the unwary.
Rome, we love it.
Oh don't fly into campino by Ryanair.
It's to cheap and you get everything you deserve if you take this route.

Hi Zedex,
Just try various cafe's and bars, but they are all expensive, look out when walking, as the locals will drive straight at you, especially the short distance from the centre of Rome to the Vatican City.
