View Full Version : The Sullivans and Kylie Minogue
slimsid2000 03-09-2004, 13:02 I was just wondering if anyone remembers a daytime Australian soap from the late 70s/early 80s called The Sullivans. I vaguely remember it but not much. It was about a family during world war 2. I can only really remember the theme tune and opening titles.
Also I believe it contained the first TV appearance of Kylie Minogue. I think she was only in about 6 episodes and played a Dutch girl called Carla.
Does anyone remember the show or even Kylie Minogue in it?
I can vaguely remember it but can't remember Kylie in it... I think it was on around the same time as Sons and Daughters, another 80s Aussie soap starring most of the early to mid 80s cast of Neighbours and even some current ones.
I remember the Sullivans. I used to hate it as a kid.
It had loads of Aussie actors in (they all seemed to do the rounds on the soap operas). Mrs Mangle who used to be in Neighbours was also in it.
Plain Talker 04-09-2004, 23:43 I think that there are only about half a dozen (oh, go -on then... a dozen) actors in Australia, and they have to shuffle them around between the different shows.
For example, the chap who played Harold Bishop in "Neighbours", was someone high-up in the prison service in "Prisoner Cell block H" and also had a significant role in Sons And Daughters"
the woman who played Bobbie's mother in the early days of "Home And Away" played a judge in "Prisoner CB-H"
the bloke who played Shane Robinson, in Neighbours (Peter O' Brien?) graduated to "The flying Doctors"
Guy Pearce, an actor in Neighbours,(he played Plain-Jane's love interest) who went on to star in "Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert" popped up in HAA as a teacher.
Kylies' sister, Dannii Minogue, played in HAA
there were some actors who went into other soaps who also played in "the Young Doctors" (in fact I am almost certain, that the wombat who played in "TYD" was "Bouncer, the labrador" in "Neighbours " /JK)
And lately, Emily Symons who played Mrilyn (?) in HAA, has cropped up in Emmerdale.
I stopped watching the Aussie soaps/ series; "sons and daughters", "prisoner CBH", "TYD", Neighbours" "HAA" "TFD", etc, as I got so fed up of spending the entire episode, unable to follow what passed for a plot/ storyline, because I was racking my brains trying to think:
"My God, s/he used to be in *insert name of soap here*, who the heck did s/he play?"

mojoworking 05-09-2004, 08:00 According to the TV Tome website:
The Sullivans ran from 1976 until 1983 and was set during the second world war and post war Melbourne, Australia.
Central characters included Dave and Grace Sullivan and their children John, Tom, Kitty and Terry. Ida Jessop lived next door and Maggie ran the local pub. In later years other central characters to be introduced included Jim Sullivan (who married Alice) and Kate Meredith.
Actors to stay during the shows complete run were Paul Cronin (Dave Sullivan), Susan Hannaford (Kitty Sullivan), Steven Tandy (Tom Sullivan), Vivian Gray (Ida Jessop), Vikki Hammond (Maggie Baker) and Norman Yemm (Norm Baker).
Famous Guest Stars included Kylie Minogue, Sam Neil and Mel Gibson.
And yes, it is available on DVD
I remember The Sullivans as it was on at lunchtime, I think....in those early days of daytime TV!
When I was about 15 I had a run in with a boot when playing rugby and ended up with some serious dental work being done. I'd trot home from school at lunchtime to go to the dentists in the afternoon. My mum would often watch the Sullivans.
It's therefore associated with having pain inflicted on me...:)
best aussie soap of all time is THE YOUNG DOCTORS end of discussion:thumbsup:
cazzaworld 05-09-2004, 16:16 The Sullivans always remind me of my grandparents coming round. As soon as the music started, my dog used to go barmy. We would open the front door, my dog would run up the road and my grandparents would be walking down. Good ol days.

Yeah that was good, but remember a Country Practice? That show owned almost as much as Neighbours.
Plain Talker 05-09-2004, 17:32 My mistake, one aussie doap looks uncannily like the next one (wooden acting, wobbly sets, crossroads-esque pseudo cliffhangers " at the end of the episode)
I said young doctors, with reference to the wombat, when I actually meant "A Country Practice"
apologies! ;)

Yeah I did wonder about that, given that Bouncer was infact a Golden Retriever and not actually anything related to the Wombat species
slimsid2000 06-09-2004, 13:02 The wombat was called Fatso.
the bloke who played Shane Robinson, in Neighbours (Peter O' Brien?) graduated to "The flying Doctors"
I met the nurse from 'The Flying Doctors' on a train to Braintree once. Not sure who was more shocked me, or the actress at being recognised years after filming the show.
slimsid2000 10-09-2004, 13:14 I've found a couple of websites relating to this. They are quite hard to find and obviously not much material still remains.
