My friend has said that students get a 10% discount. Take one along is my advice.

I want a Mac, im practically dying with the computer im on. Considered 24" but its far too expensive, even with saving up.

I think the 19" one is good enough to use, besides, websites/documents looks the pretty much the same as larger screens. Mine low spec 19" is well fast enough to use actually.

I'd agree with H_K_Delight and say that a 24" may not be necessary for your purposes - especially considering that it's twice the price of the entry 17" (not sure what model you mean by 19", H_K_... there isn't one). When it was released, it was quite clear that Apple were in fact marketing it for design and imaging professionals (hence the larger, brighter screen and souped-up graphics card). The expandability of a Mac Pro isn't always necessary, after all. Likewise, you don't need to go for the 24" model to have a pretty decent Mac - what about the 20" at a grand, or either of the standard 17" models?

This Goose moved to Mac in 1999... Not going back to PCssss

But - buy a HUGE amount of extra memory if you are going for an iMac

(but - there will be no need to spend money on all that fancy "anti virus" software!)

What's with this sudden love for all this white? Just because Macs look like they're directly shipped from heaven doesn't mean they're the right machine for you.

Macs are good for, say, professional sound engineers or video editors, but I wouldn't advise the average Joe to get one. PCs are perfect for the general user, we all know how the Windows interface works.

Apple have addressed the problem of insufficient RAM shipping with previous (pre-Intel) iMac incarnations - all except the lowest entry model ship with 1GB, although I agree that people often underestimate the amount of RAM they need.

I would. Everyday tasks are far more intuitive and efficient on OS X than Windows, the system is much more stable, and the user experience is much more enjoyable. One of the reasons that Macs have become ubiquitous in the creative industries is that 'The Computer' approaches what it should aim to be: A tool for getting things done. I don't see why the 'average Joe' shouldn't share in an enjoyable, practical, efficient way of getting things done, even if it's just doing some word processing. Macs are being used in many other fields now, spk_ben, from medical imaging to quantum mechanics calculations, to interactive interfaces at museums. My parents have an eMac - it's the first computer they've ever had.
PCs are perfect for the general user, we all know how the Windows interface works. But do we? I doubt very much that even a sizable number of Windows users really know how it works, given that it's the most ridiculously cobbled together turd I've ever come across. I haven't the foggiest how it works. It's crap.
