View Full Version : Supertram at 6.40 this morning (25/11)!
the_mandarin 25-11-2006, 17:56 I was waiting for the 6.40 tram at Hillsborough (Blue Route to Halfway) As the tram turned from Holme Lane onto Middlewood road, there was this woman who was running alongside the tram in an attempt to catch it. She suddenly dropped something that she was carrying (seemed to be a bottle) and it rolled onto the tram tracks - right in front of the tram. The driver could have run it over and he would not even be blamed for it. But the nice guy first applied his brakes to let the woman pick her stuff up - and then patiently waited for her at the stop to catch the tram!
After reading all the bus/tram driver-bashing threads, I just felt this was something that needed to be shared as well.
It feels good to see something like this so early in the morning, to know that there are some really nice people around you!
Blimey that was nice of him!!!
I have lost count of how many times I used to run for the tram at Malin Bridge only for the flippin driver to shut the doors on me. It used to happen all the time.Thank god I can now drive!
Yeah it makes a change! What really bugs me is when bus drivers see someone running for the bus and even if it would only mean stopping and waiting for a few seconds, they take a glance at the runner and then turn their head the other way as if they haven't clocked 'em. Now that's just ignorance. Rant over! Anyway, back to the the tram - well done Mr. Tram driver!
I have to say Tram drivers are ace when it comes to them waiting, loads of times Ive gone running for the tram and they have waited, tehre are only a very very small majority of tram drivers who arent very nice, the worst one i saw is when a family were getting off the tram and he shut the doors on their child, luckily her mum could open the doors again, the conductor went and gave the driver a right telling off

Yes this is one I don't understand either. Bus drivers seem to forget that they are there to provide a service, and the customers pay their wages. Bus drivers seem to take the attitude that if they are ready to go, then sod the poor person running to catch the bus.
I have not seen the same problem with tram drivers though. They seem to be drawn, as far as I can see, from the best of the bus drivers; they seem to have more care and consideration.

Don't all the bus drivers take part in a weekly 'Beat the Passenger' competition where the one who leaves the most passengers in this way gets a cash prize? :loopy:

I would agree. But in defence of the bus drivers, they are much more exposed to the general public at its worst. :gag:  :loopy: The tram drivers only need to concern themselves with driving, not taking fares or keeping order. They have conductors to do that. I'm sure if there were conductors on buses again the drivers would be a happier bunch!
Surely it's quite simple - be at the bus/tram stop before the bus/tram is set to leave.
It used to really bug me when people ran to get on the tram and then acted all hacked off if the tram left on time. The service needs to run and be punctual - if they waited at each stop for everyone who was sauntering to get on it the service would collapse in a day! If you're late for the tram, why should you hold up everyone who got out of bed on time? It's not like they're only once a day or something.
I have been asulted by Tram Staff when liveing at Dundess Road in 2003 then reprted for assult on them nothing come of this. I find 40% of them to abusive unhelpfull and at times racist.
Of course i reported them by letter but nothing come of this glad to here they have emplyed someone who gives a **** what a nice person they sound.
It happens to us all your late etc you run and i know i have seen them look and simply just drive of.
There has been the odd time i have been on the Tram seen someone runing stood up then stood in the doors and they have half closed on me and then through the intercom abuse comes my way.
The look on the person face when the those who have been running make it onto the Tram.
People are right about Malin Bridge it happens all to often there for some reson it used to be the same at Medowhell but that seems to have eased.
If i was the person who The Tram had stopped for i would write to say thank you and point out i was shocked because often they just drive of.
Now do not get onto bus drivers..
Rhino_Neil 26-11-2006, 08:32 Hm have to agree that bus and tram drivers have a schedule to keep, this is to provide a proper service for everyone on the route, so it reaches the destination on the scheduled time and all stops in between. I don't really beleive that drivers are being nasty when they pull off, they surely just do what they are instructed to by their employers?
the_mandarin 26-11-2006, 08:48 I do agree that tram and bus drivers have a schedule to follow, and I am surely not expecting them to stop for someone who still has half a mile to cover for the stop. But by waiting a couple of seconds, they are just being nice and accomodating and going that extra mile.
Agreed that people should get up on time, start early and all that - but if I am running to catch a tram, that means I did not get up early, but I am still doing what I can to make up for that :D
tinkabel 26-11-2006, 12:22 When i lived in Sheffield, the tram times were all approx anyway so waiting another 10 seconds wouldn't harm their schedule. Plus bus drivers don't stick to their schedules either, how many people have missed their bus because its set off early?!
The trams have all now got radio-synced clocks - I guess so the drivers can set off at exactly the right time now. I'd have to disagree that waiting for late people would harm the schedule, it'd be chaos. A railed transport network has to run as close as possible to time or it collapses very quickly. Buses are slightly different - many other factors are brought into play.
Trams are frequently early which is worse than being late IMO, especially when its the last beer tram home. :)
I am not a frequent tram user but I took my little boy on one when we in town the other day cos' he thinks they are trains and I thought the ticket selling guy was lovely. He showed my little boy how he could make tickets magically appear.

It is a regulation that when a bus driver has taken on the last person in the line waiting to board the door is closed the vehicle is then considered departed.
In Rotherham Bus station a new sort of dodge has started where by a person waits by one of the multitude of zebra crossings purporting to want to cross when the bus they want comes along starts banging on the drivers door and often shouting abuse when the driver will not oblige. But there again it is Rotherham Bus station (Chav Central)
