View Full Version : The new Cycle Lane Facilities in Sheffield - What do you Think ?
Mini_Cooper 25-11-2006, 08:13 With the impending environmental disaster on everyones minds, its great that the Sheffield Council have introduced some new cycle paths. So well done to the council.
The new Cycle paths are excellent, for example
1) the new one on Herries Road, just outside the Northern Gen. Its starts at Norwood Road, and disapears 50 meters further up the road
2) At Shalesmoor, starting at the new Roundabout, the new path makes its way up Netherthorpe Road, and then STOPS :loopy: at the next road, a distance of about 50 meters again.
No seriously, the paths are pathetic, surely Cycling is the best way to reduce carbon emissions......... or is it that the environmental bullys need to find more ways to tax the motorist (simply to pay their own salarys).
Any explanations for these pathetic cycle paths?
InvalidUser 25-11-2006, 08:16 I don’t like cyclists. I’m forever getting them stuck in my bull bars…

Go take a look at this (http://www.warringtoncyclecampaign.co.uk/) - and click on facility of the month - some hilarious cycle paths from clueless councils all over the country. At least it's not just a Sheffield thing.
Mini_Cooper 25-11-2006, 11:56 I just feel the Environmentalists are not wanting to address the real issues with regards to Global Warming. They are simply looking at taxing everyone to death, lets be right, the revenue has to come from somewhere to pay their salarys, they certainly don't earn their money.
They need to create congestion, and then create a congestion charge
Its like Legalised theft
Come on you environmentalists, why don't you do something positive? where are the cycle lanes?

There are some 'interesting' ones on Abbey Lane too.
Yup, I thought I'd add an example of incomplete cycle path planning near the city centre: How about the cycle paths in the subways at the roundabout near Decathlon. they come to an end in the centre of the roundabout island and there are no marked routes on the St. Mary's Church/Bramall Lane side of the roundabout...
I guess poorly signposted Cycle Routes are not just a British thing, from my past experience in the Netherlands; True, they have shedloads of cycle routes everywhere, but sometimes the signposting to your intended destination just ends at a junction with perhaps six choices of cycle path, and you have to use guesswork (or find a municipal map display if you're lucky) to be sure of where you are going...

funnily enuf i just noticed the new cycle lane whilst driving up herries road! i think its a great idea herries road between the northern entrance and longley lane/norwood ave is like waky races normally u have the buses to the left and the mental people trying to over take on the rite but beacause of the stoopid parking the hospital r making people do there wasnt enuf room for 3 lanes of traffic!
Whatif wewin 25-11-2006, 20:28 Im with you Mini Cooper:)
It would seem to make more sense in all environment and congestion busting scenarios. May be we should get a pressure group going to get the city councillors to go like the Warrington scheme.
Mini_Cooper 26-11-2006, 11:01 If all the ABLE BODIED people, who had a choice COULD use a Pushbike safely.
It would drasticly reduce
1) Carbon Emmisions
2) Traffic Congestion.
And surely, this would be extreemly effective way of meeting our targets. Even if only 5% of the population used them.
BUT
This will never happen, because the environmentalists, need to impose more environmental charges, in order to fund their own wages.

3) Obesity
I would guess a lot of paths are put infor budgetry reasons, eg. ensuring the appropriate target is met for total cycle paths.
Of course these targets would be distance not 'usefulness'! ;)
