Today i was sat in a hairdresses on Division Street when one of the helpers from the tour of Britain came in for a haircut. He was talking to the stylist whilst having his hair cut and he told her he was from Leeds, anyway he said all the cities the tour includes are BETTER than Leeds.

Ive moved from leeds to sheffield!

leeds is a great looking city but its a lot dirtier than sheffield in terms of rubbish on the street etc.

i prefer sheffield because bigger isnt always better and leeds is full of crime and idiots where as people in sheffield seem freindly.

And leeds is over priced

I agree with the previous post. I have just moved from leeds to sheffield. Leeds has a glossy veneer of nice hotels and resteraunts and trendy winebars, but it is the most scum ridden city I have had the misfortune to find myself in.
I suppose the football team and its supporters should have give me a clue!!

What else would you say when you have a Sheffield lady with scissors to your throat? ;)

Is Leeds really that bad?

I have lived in Sheffield for 8 years now, but I currently feel torn between Sheffield and Leeds, I can't make my mind up which city I want to live in.

I really love both cities, I love the cosy feel of Sheffield, it's friendly people, great sport and entertainment facilities, and of course the dramatic Peak district all around us.

But I also love the buzzing city feel of Leeds with it's great nightlife, revitalised city centre and waterfront docks and it's superb shops.

Wish I could combine Sheffield/Leeds into one city, that would be really cool and resolve my dilemma!

Skyfitsboy - Leeds does seem very nice when you visit. But after a while you see through the gloss and its not pretty. Essentialy leeds council has spent all its money making the city centre look nice so that all the big accountancy firms (E&Y, D&T, PWC and KPMG) who leach of all the big financials in the area (namely halifax bank of scotland but with other large presences) can feel "cosey" when they step out of one of the raft of so called posh hotels that have been established. Unfortunately if you step less than 1 mile fron the city centre you have high-rise flats, chronice problems with drugs, gun crime is rife and general anti-social behaviour everywhere. There is money in that city, but its not being used to try and sort out the depravation and crime up there.

Don't get me wrong by the way - I am not overly sensitive and scared to out or anything - I served in some of northern irelands worst trouble spots before the ceasefire - but this place is nasty.
I once walked from a club on one side of town, via a fast food place to the station for a cab. In that time I saw 6, yes SIX fights.

You can easily get cabs everywhere, pick the right bars and have a good night without seeing any real problem. But walk of the beaten track and it's truly wretched.

oh - and my car insurance has just halved by moving here. Nice!

Ah yes, all those big accountancy firms who have closed down their Sheffield offices and moved the business to Leeds because they cant sustain an office in Sheffield because of lack of business.

Agree about the disparity between the centre and the rest of Leeds, but Sheffield has this too. It's just that Sheffield centre is generally such a dump that you don't notice the gap as much.

It's slowly getting better, but I'm afraid that everyone should just accept that Sheffield will always be at least 5 years behind Leeds and 10 years behind Manchester.

It doesn't stop us trying though eh?

Not so much years behind as years sideways, as one person put it

Economically Leeds is much better than Sheffield.

Sheffield has to rely on the donations of other EU countries to make up for the fact that Sheffeild is incapable to paying for it's self.

Well done Blunkett et al

Whilst growing up I hadmore contact (i guess that is the word) with Leeds than Sheffield. We used to get the train into Leeds all the time and go shopping.
That bit I really enjoyed but I cannot honestly say I would want to live there.

Obviously I have lived in Sheffield ;) and have enjoyed it enough to wish to stay rather than going back to my home town. Cannot say Leeds has ever been an option to stay permanently urgh

I worked in Leeds for a couple of weeks about two years ago. It's a nice city centre but I didn't feel particularly safe walking around, especially after dark (which was about 4pm because it was December).

I don't know what caused this feeling but it's somthing I've never experienced in any other city. Certainly, I've never felt particularly unsafe in the centre of Sheffield, even in the early hours of the morning when there's nobody else about.

Maybe it's just me, but in most cities I've been to I've always been happy to walk around on my own. In Leeds it was a case of being very glad to get back to my hotel.

That's not to say Sheffield doesn't have its own problems.

Doesn't really make sense to have 2 offices that close together - that was just crap planning in the first place!

exactly my point! At least the "less advantaged" of Sheffield are not forced to shop in an environment that is designed to alienate them. They aren't discouraged by the money the city council spends on pretty bits of concrete instead of housing. It is a gesture of inhumanity that is reflected in the behaviour of some of the population

Sheffield nees to improve sure, but I hope to god it does not model itself on either of those two. If it looks like leeds here in 5 years them I'm moving!!

slightly off topic but does anyone know if Leeds has a forum like this? I may be moving there soon, going to see how the commuting goes for now.

You missed my point. There USED to be enough business for the 2 offices. There now isn't. What does that tell you?

So let the pigs wallow in the mud that they are used to eh? At least it's THEIR mud. Cripes, is that how we should regenerate Sheffield?

Personally I don't think we should have any scummy shops like this in the city centre.

If people want pound shops there's a few in Meadowhall!

I hate those shops myself but its obvious there's a call for them if not there wouldn't be so many. Why do so many Sheffielders use them?? No wonder no quality shops open in the city centre if so many people wouldn't spend more than a pound on most things....
