Why doesn't the city council sponsor a proper street festival/party in the city centre? Completely free with let's say 4-5 live music stages scattered around (Peace Garden/Barker's Pool/Fargate etc.). Get some popular semi-big name bands for the evening. Close the streets down and have all the restaurants put outdoor seating. Party until late at night.

Just a thought for creating some Sheffield pride.

A lot of people living within the city centre may have something to do with it..noise levels etc etc.

Surely, this sort of thing should be part and parcel of being in a city centre. That's what you choose when you live in town. It's a great idea.

I believe there were 350,000 people at the Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool city centre this weekend. That's 350,000 people partying and listening to bands in the streets, bars and waterfront areas, all for free. And that's despite the presence of a city centre living population that's much bigger than Sheffield's.

Bring it on Sheffield!

You mean like the millenium new year party. That was a good one, the area around Fargate/Pinstone Street was cordened off and they sold tickets for £10 each. They had a stage in the peace gardens with bands on, and had a disco at the top of Fargate. There were some funfair rides along the streets and a bar on Surrey Street, along with food kiosks. The ticket price also included travel on special late night bus services to and from the event. (Of you didn't require the bus you got a £5 discount).

Perhaps this should be reintroduced this year?

I wasn't around for the millenium so I'm not sure :) I was thinking of a council funded free as in free party. The idea being that it is a party for Sheffield and you shouldn't have to pay to get in.

And in the summer :) Then again January may be warmer than most of this August!

Speaking as a denizen of the city centre but not for all, I would say things like street festivals are the reason I moved here ;)
