is it me or is sheffield seriously lacking any exciting and creative job opportunities?
I have considered moving to other cities so many times but I love every other part of sheffield so much.
Are all the exciting jobs hiding in some underground employment publication or website? Are they all taken, or is this city only ever going to hold civil service jobs (no offense to anyone intended).
520,700 people live in this city surley not everyone is an administrator or a data inputter, there must be better opportunities. :help:

The IT industry in sheffield is pretty poor compared to other places... Don't know about anything else.

Can you define what you mean by an exciting job?

Ive sent a few, maybe Im doing something wrong. But its the actual industries that seem to not be here. You know all the multi-million pound companies that invent new posts, they are all in different cities. Like (just for an example coz I cant think of one right now, i know its not in the UK) Disneys Imagineers. You see great jobs advertised with Orange and BBC etc etc and we have DfES and the Sheffield Star.

Sorry I suppose Im wingeing.

Do you know of any leading orgnisations that are based that I am just being ignorant to?

Exciting job: Creative and multi-faceted role, which requires invention and development. Varied duties with continuous training.

We do have 2 universities, the NHS, EDS, HSBC and the civil service.
Orange aren't that far away in Leeds, Capgemini in Rotherham, (quite a few IT consultancies and management consultancies in Leeds actually).

I agree, the picking are poor in Sheffield. I think a huge number of companies are really missing out. There are so many graduates in Sheffield who stay on after Uni because they love the city so much, myself included. Still, for a lot of companies London is the UK. It's a lose lose situation.

If I knew where jobs like that were I'd be applying.

Open your own shop selling something you are interested in, it answers all the above.

I agree since leaving uni I am yet to find a job that sounds remotely exciting in Sheffield, unless I want to end my days playing with paperwork and filing... seems moving is the only option for job opportunities!

There were no decent creative jobs going in Sheffield.

So I made my own. I make a living, it's not lucrative but I don't starve! I can generally afford the equipment I need and I'm lucky enough to have secured free office space (for now...)

There are no government incentives for start-up businesses (trust me, I've looked and apparently don't qualify for anything), and I have too much coming in for the prince's trust to help out, so I'm winging it!

I dare say I'd fare better under a Conservative administration, which is partly depressing....

I think for exciting theres a lot to be said for either joining the emergency services or the armed forces.

thats ace, they say the first few years are the hardest, but once u get past those you will be laughing and hopefully doin it with a pile of wonga in your mit.

What is your business?

I have not had the courage to start my own business but, Ive been on the cusp so many times. I am constantly finding a new venture to exploit or inventing new products but never follow them through. I have looked into funding and your right its not good. Business Link are quite helpful with free courses though. But courses dont buy equipment and premises.

Sheffield lacks a strong media industry - i know the workstation is pretty good, there’s a few graphic design companies and i hear sheffield has a gaming industry? I’m just starting out as a cameraman and it seems pretty low in this industry - there are companies about but the opportunities are weak.

You're right about the frugality needed. Don't expect to earn much for the first 5 years.
Do you need equipment and premises? I started with nothing. There's a lot of nonsense spoken by Business Link, Chamber of Commerce, and their accountant/solicitor hangers on about needing this that and the other to start a business. In my experience what you really need are customers and orders. To get that all you need is a phone. If you've got orders the rest will fall into place.

I need to sort my phone out. Where I've moved to might just be temporary, so I've not got a landline! Oh well, next thing on the list....

My business is graphic design, and my start-up costs weren't terrible. It's not a cheap industry to be in, but as long as i have a computer that actually boots up (I do now!), legal software (which I bought as part of my startup costs - there's no excuse for a professional outfit using dodgy pirated kit) and talent and determination I'll always be able to keep a roof over my head.

Next stop, employees and VAT.....

Eesh....

maybe your not looking in the right places or have the right ambitions, Sheffield has some of the best employers in the UK and just up the M1 Leeds has more.

What are your qualifications/experience/education, what are you looking for.?

I hear loads of times people looking for 'exiting' jobs but don't know what they are looking for, it's not as if someone is going to ring your doorbell with the job to end all jobs.

Prospective job hunting is the best for well educated/experienced personnel the other is job fairs, here you'll get ideas and opportunities that you'll not find in the Sheffield Star, firms that recruit here are usually ahead of other employers and serious about their staff's future.

Good lucj anyway

For exiting you could try the police. Someone at my class moved from being an English lecturer at the uni to the police and he's loving it.

Sheffield has a serious lack of good creative jobs. If you're a fresh faced graduate designer willing to earn next to nothing then you might find a place in the Workstation. But for such a big city, Sheffield hasn't got much in the way of a media industry, which is an absolute shame.

Also, the hours of commuting to Leeds or Manchester for something decent weren't what I consider ideal, and that's why I left Sheffield and took my years of experience elsewhere.

One day I might return...if the opportunity presents itself!

Dear Kayxe,

why don't you try working for yourself. Have a look at the website below and get back to me if you are interested.

This would suit anyone who wants to 'dip their toes' into self-employment without costs, risk and with the full support of a major blue-chip company.

You've nothing to lose as it it is free to register and I will be happy to give you free telephone support and provide you with all promotional material and advice.

Is there any job that can be classed as really exciting?

After a few months most jobs become just a job.

You could try working for yourself, that can be exciting, well a white knuckle ride at least!
